Sadly the Family one is the only one they don't offer sales on nor can you get it anywhere else but Microsoft. Stinks to pay full price but it was our only option as well.
One question though......it says I can upgrade by applying the balance of my gold card to the family.
So, would that mean that if I find a killer gold deal around Christmas for like $45 (normally $59) then I would still be saving $15 by applying the $59 remaining on my gold card????
Have you ever done it that way?
For now, I think I will just go ahead and pay full price, but I am thinking ahead.

If it is the first year that you get the family membership you can start with the basic $59.00 membership and find it cheaper at places like Amazon-I think we got ours around $40.00. We got it for the first time about 1 1/2 years ago and we got the cheaper basic membership. We put the balance on a prepaid credit card because I don't like the auto-renewals on my cards. Well fast-forward a year and all of the emails go to my husband, who never told me about it, so I didn't know it needed to be renewed, and he just figured I knew and took care of it. I didn't know. So, on a night that one of my son's had a sleep-over it expired. UGH! We thought we could do it the same way. I was wrong. We bought a sale 1 basic membership on Amazon and tried to upgrade. Not allowed! We ended up on the phone to XBOX support for about 2 hours, had to end up paying the entire $99.00 AFTER we put in the basic code. Then we had $159.00 in credit. The first guy we talked to didn't do it right, so we talked to someone else the next day after we had it cut off again, had to pay ANOTHER $99.00! It took about 5 days to get the money refunded to us. Never again. Gave them a valid CC#.
Long story short, you may be able to get the family cheaper the first time by upgrading, but it must auto-renew annually at full price or you have no access to the account you had.
