we use a site called g2a( https://www.g2a.com/xbox-live-12-months-gold-subscription-card-gold-pl-eu-us.html ). I have never paid more than $40 for a year and they give you a code within minutes so you can apply it quickly. It is an international marketplace, so I always use paypal to protect the purchase, but I've done 4 or 5 purchases and never had any problems. All my codes have worked. I did have to do a phone verification on the first purchase I think though.

If you aren't comfortable with that, I'd just keep watching sales on sites like newegg. They just had a 12 month gold card plus a bonus $5 live gift card for $39.99

Just saw on slickdeals, that gamesdeal.com has it for $35. You have to use code SLICKDEALSXBOX to get that price.
