DD is 18, she is asking for an XBox for Christmas and she said they are only $100. Do girls actually play these games? The only people we know with them are pre-teen to teenage boys. I bought her a Wii and she never used it but she had to have it. Her boyfriend had an XBox but his mom took it away because he got a C. DH wants to buy it and I don't. What else needs to be bought besides the console. I have $300 in Wii stuff that was never used. She has never played one before and now it's all she wants. She spends so much time on the computer and iphone, one more distraction is not what she needs.

Wow, is this for real? I'm sorry if that comes off as rude but OF COURSE girls play video games.
As for what you'll need: controllers (obviously), is it an Xbox or Xbox 360? That will make a big difference in regards to wifi and accessories. What types of games does she like to play? Xbox has much better/less "kiddie" games compare to the Wii, that might be why she wants it and hasn't used the wii.

Girls definitely play Xbox. I personally don't like the "stereotypically male" shoot-em-up games like Call of Duty and multiplayer Halo (some girls love these, though), but there are tons of story-driven games out there that I really love. The Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, the Mass Effect trilogy, Deus Ex: Human Revolution... I play everything from Alan Wake to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning to The Force Unleashed to Disney Infinity.

You will need a controller, and if she wants to play online, a headset. It would also be nice to start her off with an Xbox Live Gold subscription, even if you only give her 3 months and have her pay to extend it. I would have her choose her own games, though. The salesperson/Internet may tell you that _____ game is the best/most popular, but it may be a type of game or combat style that she's not at all interested in. For example, I'd be a little disappointed if someone gave me one of the early Dragonage games because I hate switching between different characters to win a fight.

My dd is more of a PC gamer but she does enjoy some things on the Xbox. She's been playing alot of Elder Scrolls lately and she asked for another game but I can't remember what it was.
And as for girls not playing video games, my dd wants to become a video game designer :)

At first I agreed, but if you read the post she wanted and got another system and has never used it. So, maybe, THIS girl doesn't play them?

OP, you need to talk to her. Why did she never use the Wii? Why will it be different? And maybe, what can you get her that is not xbox, and then she can buy it for herself if she thinks it's that important to her life? (and why not just use her boyfriend's, if he can't use it right now? might be worth her time to talk to boyfriend's mom)

I thinking you need to talk to BFs parents too. Is it possible she wants it so that he can play at your house without the ire of his parents.

You think the OP should call the parents of her 18 year old dd's boyfriend because he may want to play the Xbox at her house?

I too would ask why she doesn't use the wii. It might be that she's just not into the games available for it. I have a wii and haven't used it in years, I just don't care for the games on it and prefer Xbox or PS3, they have more mature games.

:thumbsup2

Wiis are geared to younger kids and have more juvenile games. I'm not surprised she doesn't play it.

OP, your daughter is way off regarding the price of an Xbox console. Unless you find a great sale, you'll be paying almost $200 for a basic set up of a 4GB console with one wireless controller. You'll need an additional controller and some games as well and an Xbox Live subscription. Expect to spend about $400.00. If she wants an XBox One, no problem, as it's unlikely you'll find this newest console available for several months (avid gamers have preordered most of them and will snap up the few offered on release day).

You know why your husband wants to get one! At least someone would be playing it.

Oh I missed that she was 18, when she said BF parents took his xbox away.

Still think they may be in cahoots.

OP, now is a good time to get it with new consoles coming out. Lots of good sales. The Wii is geared towards, younger kids as others have said. Plenty of awesome games that ladies can get into. I'm a big Bioware (game developer) fan because,of their lady friendliness. Is it possible she's been playing at her boyfriends house and now has an interest of her own? Or maybe she just wants to play online with him... In which case the phase may pass. I'd just ask her and go from there.

I imagine her daughter was perusing the BF ads. Most places have them for $100 over the weekend. I think $150 or $200 came with controllers and a game. Not a bad deal.

well she just turned 18 last week, she is a senior and nd is a junior. She has not played with an xbox before. I suspect they want to play games together. She just loaded grand theft auto onto her computer and is using his acct. Somehow. I don't want to spend $300, as she wants a chromebook as well to use at college next yr.

I would go with the Chromebook then; she'd get more use from that.

You can resell the Wii, accessories and games. Maybe that will be enough to get a pre-owned Xbox :confused3 Check out Game Stop, Amazon, or any other electronic shop that buys pre-owned consoles :thumbsup2

If it is a choice between the game console and the Chromebook, I would go with the one she would actually use for school ;)

I had my parents buy me an XBOX when I was about 16. I'm a girl and love video games.

I still have my xbox and wii. Play them here and there now due to work and university, but I love it.

Why wouldn't females play video games? :confused3 I like a first person shooter as much as the next guy.

I'm more of a PC gamer though, waiting for the Xbox 360 to go down in price thanks to the next gen version to get one!
