Verry Classy.
I Loved her speech last night!

If there is any woman that I have respect (even sympathy) for, it's certainly Laura Bush. She is definitely classy, no denying it. She's been thrust into the public eye, even though she's expressed discomfort with that, but manages to pull through like a champ. Good for her.

But why does it have to be a contest between here and Teresa H. Kerry? Neither of them are running for president. Can't we have respect for both for being put in an extremely difficult situation and making the best of it?

Laura and Teresa are two strong women with admirable qualities that express themselves differently, and I'm really uncomfortable with the statements I've read here that because Teresa is more outspoken that that automatically makes here less classy. I was extremely frustrated with commentary after her speech at the DNC that she was too "feminist" and should have limited herself to supporting her husband. She was herself that night, just as Laura was last night, so why can't we celebrate that?

When it turns toward attacking the spouses (or even trying to win by pitting spouse against spouse), then that's taking things way too far. If you're going to attack someone, aim towards the people who made the decision to run themselves.

I agree, rcyannacci. It does not have to be, nor should it be, a contest between the two of them. They both have qualities to be admired and respected.

She is a very classy lady and I have tremendous respect for her. as well as Teresa Heinz Kerry.

Another Laura fan here.

I think she is very classy, elegant and comes across as a kind and caring woman.

Being the wife of a president or a candidate can not possibly be easy, and I think she handles the attention with grace.

I thought she did a great job as well. I'll be she was a wonderful teacher.

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see any attack on Theresa Heinz Kerry on this thread. In fact, I didn't even see her name mentioned, until your post, rcyannacci.

Laura is poised, articulate, well mannered, and sincere. She did come across very well last night, particularly when she opened up about some of their more private moments. The the twins speechwriter did an awful job. The jokes were unfunny, and left Jenna and Barbara giggling into the mic most of the time.

I wish I had kept watching. Mrs. Bush is a very interesting woman; I just had to stop listening to the giggling.
They should have kept to the first decision and not have the
twins speak. Hopefully they will take some
of their mother's grace as they get older. They are obviously
smart young women, just needing a little more maturity.

I am sad to see such a positive thread include some negative
remarks about other people. Oh well.

Deb- I was responding to these comments in this thread that set up a comparison between the two women:

Mrs Bush was fab, in total contrast to Mrs Kerry.

I didn't say there was a specific attack; I asked about the need for some to make the contrast, to set them up against one another.

I did say "statements that I've read" later on, so sorry I wasn't more clear about. I've seen many disparaging remarks about Mrs. Kerry on other threads before. In this thread, however, this is only implied.

Mrs. Bush is the classiest first lady since Jackie Kennedy, IMHO.

"The Power behind the throne is the POWER"Laura is wonderful and her kids are just kids, young and dumb!

I also think we should give the twins a break. It is obvious that the speech was scripted, and that they didn't feel comfortable with the words they had been given. If they had been allowed to be themselves, and I guarentee that it would have been a shining moment. The implication that they should only be "seen not heard" is pretty insulting, IMO. They are definitely attractive girls, but that doesn't mean they don't have more to offer their father's campaign, give the chance to be real.

I don't support the actions of the Bush administration personally, but there's no denying that they have a strong family. You can tell that he really loves his wife and kids (shown in his intro last night), and that they feel the same way. In a lot of respects, they appear to be a very solid, normal family, with the kids acting like...well, kids, and the parents at times being frustrated with that, and at times being amused by it. That's a lot more real that what I saw last night.

I really don't want to be attacking one side or the other with my statements on this thread. I'm only expressing a disappointment (with both sides) that politics has become so much about clean and perfect, manufactured images. It makes me feel like someone doesn't trust me enough to tell me the truth.

I too think she is a very classy lady. She just has an air about her.

I thought the twins were set up to appeal to gen x'ers etc. Unfortunately I think it backfired and came off as high school. I do think it's good they spoke though. I've seen negative comments on this board about the Bush's not involving them, so I think now that they are adults they made a decision to be more visible.

I've always been impressed with Laura Bush. I actually enjoyed her speech less than usual. Convention speechs always end up seeming pretty contrived IMO.

Yes I agree The First Lady is all class. I was reading an email someone sent me the other day regarding the Secret Service and how they feel about her.

They say she is a genuine, caring person and goes out of her way to shake their hands or Thank them for good work. Asks for their families by name ect......

What a wonderful woman!

I also agree that the speech for the girls was terrible. I wish they had left out the "sex in the city" part when they were talking to their grandmother. I just did not like that:D But I do think both girls are really pretty.
