Treasure Reportedly Found On Chilean Island
Island Chain Inspired 'Robinson Crusoe'
September 28, 2005
JUAN FERNANDEZ ISLAND, Chile --
An ancient treasure has reportedly been discovered in the Chilean island chain that inspired the novel about castaway Robinson Crusoe.
... the 300-year-old booty hasn't even been dug up, and there's already debate over who has the rights to the discovery. The treasure was reportedly found by a robot metal detector belonging to a Chilean company.
... those who found the trove say they won't reveal its hiding place unless the government guarantees them the right to half of it.
... the machine detected a stash that could be worth up to $10 billion.
... The booty is believed to include coins, jewels, gold bars and more than one papal ring.
... The archipelago is also where a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk was marooned for five years starting in 1704. His survival inspired Daniel Defoe's novel, "Robinson Crusoe."
