We have two guys who are redoing our deck and stairs, and they chain smoke throughout the entire day. Right now I have all the windows open in the house and they just showed up to start working and I can smell the smoke throughout the house already. Common sense obviously is to close the windows, but it's getting really annoying to have deal with the lingering smoke smell and ciggarette butts outside my house. No one in my home smokes, so we don't have an ashtray and I don't know how to approach them about the situation. I consider it a bit rude to stand around smoking outside someone's house while on a job. Am I wrong?

You are definitely NOT wrong. I would ask them to please smoke over there -------> and point them to a place that is NOT close to the house (maybe out next to their truck at the far end of your driveway?).

I don't know where in the country you are, but here in the mid-Atlantic they would not get away with it. Anti-smoking laws are prevalent and even my one older neighbor has been gently chided when caught on his occasional outdoor smoke. Your employees (you are paying them right?) should follow your rules. As in, do this work the way I want it and no smoking!
