My husband and I were away for the weekend with some friends. This will be a little long, sorry. On saturday when the other couple arrived we decided to go to the inside pool area and relax. Her son is nine. I enjoy the jacuzzi and like to read. It was a cold, windy, and raining weekend. So most of the kids hung out there. Please do not get me wrong I love children, and mine are grown. And no this is not about my friends son. Upon arriving there were alot of kids in the jacuzzi.

I dont have a problem with kids in there. There were all going back and forth as the pool was cool. And the kids were respectful even though some were really young. Anyway I was sitting next to my friend and this little girl who is 3 was looking at me asking me if it was to hot to get in. I told her to ask her mom and dad. She was wearing a life jacket. Dad was in the jacuzzi, and mom was paying more attention to her sons than her daughter. I really felt sorry for her. She kept asking me the same question and I gave my same answer.

After about five mins went by I got back in and the girls dad got out. She no longer had her life jacket on. Mom was just standing. Well the little girl started talking to me about my earrings, and then she started talking about sharks. Well mom finally sat down but still would not pay attention to her daughter. Next thing I knew the little girl was standing up on the place where you sit down and looked at me and asked me if it was deep. I said oh probably for you. Then she said I can swim, I said you can? Well she stepped off the seating area and started to go under and grabbed me. Well I grabbed her and put her back up on the seated area. She was still trying to catch her breath. The mother let out a gasp and was just sitting there watching, then ordered her daughter to come over to her she said no and walked away. Mother finally got up and went to get the life vest.

Mother told her to put it on and she ran to the other side and the mother did not come and make her do it she set the vest down and resat down. The little girl came back and repeated herself. Needless to say I thought I need to get out as I really did not want any responsibility for even touching her daughter. Would you have said something? Would you walk away? I would really feel bad if something would have happend to her. The signs inside say there is no life guard on duty. Just makes me mad to know she would not talk with her daughter or take no reguard for her saftey as well Jo

Guess my instinct would have been the same as yours - to stay well out of it!

seems for what ever reason the little girl was being ignored and no one seemed to care that she was about to drown but you. She probably thought that you would be nice enough to look after her with out her asking you to:sad2:

There are some parents that will let anybody else watch their kids as long as it's not left up to them! I would have said something to the mom, like "your daughter has a question for you" and then it would be up to her to answer her.
Was it possible that she was not the Mom? Maybe an older sister, aunt or something? Still, if she was responsible for watching her then she should have been watching her.

It looked like the mother did (half-heartedly) try to make the DD put on the life vest. She should have said something soothing first to the little girl than just berate her. Then she should have said what just happened was WHY she needed to put the vest on.

If I were you, I would have told the little girl to put the vest on. (She seemed to listen to you. Hopefully she would put the vest on.) Then I would have gotten out of the pool, as you did, and moved away.

I would have asked if I could help her put her jacket on. I would have never lived with myself if she would have drown.

That's what I would have done... "You really should put your life vest on like your Mom said"

No it was defitnatly mom way older, she just let the child choose to not put the vest on. She was more in tune with watching her boys more than her daughter. Little girl just acted like she had no fear to just jump in like. I was shocked. If it would have been my child I would have been very grateful for someone grabbing her and then I would have made her put vest back on or get out. But I am not her parent. Doesnt look like the kind of person who would listen to anyone say something to her. I hope she doesnt get a harsh wake up call one day. Thanks for the replys, I feel a little better knowing that you guys would have done the same thing. Jo

I am not a threat maker or anything like that, but I think I would have told the mom to either pay attention to to child or I would the police. A mother who (seemingly deliberately) turns her back on a little child at a swimming pool could be charged with criminal negligence.

I would have helped her put the life vest back on~ and then left~

I would have found the bar and not gone back till that family left.:rolleyes1

Well we saw them the whole weekend, and I dont drink that much. But if I ever run into this situation again I would defitinatly talk to the parent. Hopefully it wont though. Jo
