I'm curious as to what other people here would do in this situation.

We are landing at the airport from WDW at about 6:15PM. I am having surgery the next morning at 7:00AM and we have to be at the hospital no later than 5:00 to register and get checked-in.

The hospital is about an hour (no traffic) from where we live so we would probably leave at about 3:30AM

My dad cannot miss work the day of my surgery so this is where we are having trouble making a decision.

We have 2 options:
Drive home, drop my dad off and than drive into the city and stay at a hotel near the hospital (probably get to the hotel between 9:30 and 10PM)

OR

Drive home and drive to the hospital the next morning.

The airport we are flying into is between our house and the hospital. Our house is about 25 minutes North and the hospital is about 40 minutes South of the airport. If our house was on the way to the hospital, this would be an easy decision. Also, even with hospital rates, we cannot find a hotel for less than about $175/night plus parking.

My mom and I keep going back and forth about what to do. On one hand, my mom does not want to have to leave the house at 3:30AM after spending about 8 hours travelling the day before BUT, she also really doesnt want to have to drive from the airport, to our house, back down to the hospital after traveling for 8 hours either. It seems kind of like a lose, lose situation.

I personally dont really care either way. I dont really plan on sleeping that night anyways adn I dont have to drive...hahha

Which would you choose to do?

Idk. . but can't your Dad take something like Shuttle Express home from the airport and you and your Mom can head to the hotel? That would seem like the best option.

We thought about that...a taxi would probably be more than $75 one way. Taxis here are about $2.75/mile PLUS traffic delays (and we are in LA and will be landing during rush hour) and we are about 25 miles from the airport.

We thought about super shuttle but we have had 3 bad experiences with them. All 3 times they did not show up to the airport to pick us up (Why we used them 3 times...I have no idea....but apparently we learned 3 strikes and no more)

The other car services are all between $80-$90 one way.

It's one of those questions of is convenience worth about $100...

We're paying for a Disney trip and than $400 for 2 nights at a hotel near the hospital. I've tried to convince my mom that $100 is just a drop in the bucket compared to everything else....yeah she's having trouble with the idea of parting with that $100

I think in her mind she's trying to do this as cheap as possible and that is hard when you are trying to find a hotel near Beverly Hills the week of Christmas. So i think shes just shell shocked with money right now.

What tie does your dad have to be at work? Can you all go to the hotel and spend the night, then he drops you two off at the hospital in the morning and still have time to drive on to work (if you have to be there at 5:00 he could still be at work by 7:00, right?).
He would have to come back to pick you up after your stay anyway, but that might not be a bad thing. There is probably a shuttle from the hotel to the hospital, or else it may be walking distance or a cheap taxi ride for your mom for the night in between.

I would reschedule the surgery. If your flight is delayed or canceled, you are going to end up in a real bind. Besides that, you are going to end up going into the surgery without being well rested, which might make your recovery more difficult.

I would go straight home from the airport and get up early to drive to the hospital. That's a lot of running around after flying, etc. But I would take an earlier flight home just in case there are delays. This would also give you all more time to rest up from travelling.

I hope the surgery goes well. Good luck!

Does the hotel have a shuttle to/from the airport? How do you plan on getting HOME from the hospital?

If money is an issue reschedule the surgery.

If money is a problem, everyone go home and drive in early the next day-especially if you aren't planning on sleeping the night before.

ITA. Too stressful which could impact wellness. Should be in the most relaxed frame of mind possible when going into surgery.

Yea, the more I think about it, the more I would believe that I would not want my surgery immediately after a vacation. Too much stress, in addition I think I would be stressed on my vacation knowing I was getting surgery at the end of it.

So my final answer is to reschedule.;)

He leaves our house for work at 6:15. He is supposed to be at work by 8. He works 8-6. He works about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from where the hospital is.

Rescheduling the surgery is not really an option any of us actively want to pursue.

I am in school until December 10th. We leave the 15th and get back the 21st and than I go back to school Jan. 2nd. We had originally talked about the
22nd, 23rd, or 24th and the only time that they could get an OR was the
22nd at 7AM. The ORs are completely booked those 3 days. If I dont have the surgery during my break, I have to wait until June and this has already been pushed back 6 months once and we all prefer not to push it back again it we dont have to.

My doctor is aware of the fact that we are not coming back until the night before and she has no problem with that.

Money is not really an issue as in we dont have it in our expenses, it's just that we would prefer not to spend it obviously if it is not 100% necessary and to my mom, that type of convenience is not 100% necessary.

THANK YOU!!! you know whats funny. with trying to figure all of this out, we didnt even think about changing our flight time and we can do that because we are flying SW so we can cancel and get credit adn than rebook. For some reason that didnt even cross my mind. That would actually help a lot just with time. I think if we get home eariler, my mom wont have as much of a problem with driving in so early. again, thank you!

I would drive home and leave in the morning to go to the hospital. I would want to go home and check my mail, get clean underwear, etc before surgery. And to me getting home at 9-11 at night isn't that late so it wouldn't be a problem. You are also right most people don't sleep well before surgery anyway so it really doesn't matter where you are Home, hospital, hotel,

Check with the hospital. Usually they have agreements for special rates with nearby hotels.

Can you rent a car at the airport for a day-that will only be about $30.

Why not take 2 cars to the airport. Have your dad take one home and you an your mother take the other one to the hotel.

In my best case scenario, i would have your parents drop you off at the hotel, have your dad drive him & your mom home & then your mom could drive back to the hotel to be with you after rush hour. That way your mom could get some rest & you could get a lot of rest.

Beverly Hills is very pricey, try alittle bit further away, if you stay about 15-20 minutes away, you could probably find a much cheaper hotel in hollywood, culver city, or mid city.
