Suppose you have a VERY part time job. Most of the time there is enough hours allotted to do it well. During some major holidays however the work load increases tremendously, about double although your allotted hours are increased very little. In order to try to stay afloat you've been working off the clock. You even have a co worker who comes in off the clock to help you but even the 2 of you can't keep up. The company won't budge on the number of hours they will allot you. Would you continue to work off the clock in order to do the job correctly or would you do only the hours you are given and leave it? If you continue to work off the clock the company will think you are being given enough hours. If you don't the customer will be extremely unhappy and you fear you will look so bad that they will want to replace you. Also, it seems your immediate supervisor isn't pulling her share because nothing seems to have changed when you come in. WWYD?

Go up the chain and tell them what's happening. Tell them that you can't keep donating hours, so they either need to increase your hours or accept that the work won't all get done.

can you take anything of vaule from the employer to make up the differnce ;)

Your company has it made!

They have an surge in demand and administration refuses to budge on the hours? How could the powers that be not know you are donating hours? The question is do they care. And it appears not. Probably because they are getting the work for free and free is good when applied to the bottom line.

I wouldn't care if it were the best part time job in the world. At no time should they get free work from you (while you are stressed and miserable at that). There is no ho, ho, ho in that equation!

I'd tell them the gravy train is coming to a stop. Up the ante or I'd be getting off.

I used to do this - I'd take work home so I would stay on top of my responsibilites. They ended up eliminating the position because they didn't think it was needed!

Don't make the mistake of letting them think it's enough - tell them it's not and SHOW THEM by only doing what you can in the alloted hours.

Good luck!

I would not work off the clock even if meant the fear of losing my job (p/t jobs are readily available even in areas with tight employment). If you are injured off the clock you will not be covered by workers comp.

Give 100% of your effort,Do what you can in the allotted time and no more working for free, trust me when I say that if you filled out a time card and filled in hours you didn't work they would fire you. if they still give you a hard time about not finishing call the N.L.R.B. and see what they have to say.

Shugardrawers and my DW work for the same company. Not the same division but at the end of the day, the money is still coming from the same building. All of you that are familiar with DW's work situation right now are getting another "taste" of what a mess this company is in under it's new leadership.

Shugar - they are doing the same thing with the hours to ML. The stores are starved for payroll. They told them they EXPECT them to do Comp plus 16% this month (make last years figures plus an extra 16%) but they cut their hours by 30% from what they had this year.

She's not doing it. She's not giving them one minute over what she has been contracted for. Can you blame her? I can tell you that all the other managers that DW works with and helps out are doing the same thing. They are sick and tired with the BS going on within this company under the new leadership and are at the point now that if it isn't done after their contracted 45 hours... oh well.

Quite frankly, if you give them free labor, they will cut you further for the next major event in February. Corp stores are in the hole by millions of dollars and they need to make the money up somewhere, and payroll in the field is always the quickest and least painful for the Fat Cats in corporate.

This is exactly what I fear most. I really do want to do a good job but I can't in the time they've given me and it's not just me complaining about it. Seems like it takes an act of congress to get fired at this company but still I worry. I really need the money and it's one of the few jobs I feel like I can do most of the time. I am allotted 5 hours TOTAL for this weekend. I used 4 yesterday and still left long before it was what I would consider acceptable. That leaves 1 hour today to get everything done. That's barely enough to time figure out what stock needs to go out and get it from the back room, let alone put it out. It's good to know it's not just us out in the field with this problem but I'm still torn between doing a good job and doing what they've given me time to do.

If you get hurt on the job and you are not clocked in, their insurance will not cover you. I would only work my alloted hours

I wouldn't do it. My job(retail also) doesn't pay me enough to work off the clock and even if someone did-if they're caught they get fired. That's also coupled with the fact that my store is cutting hours left and right because we are so over in hours compared with sales.

IMO, no job is worth working for free, you're in a bad spot, but I still wouldn't do it.

I'd have to look it up, but I believe working off the clock is illegal,Shugar. Your boss could be in big trouble for having you work off the clock. :earseek:

She's not "having" us work off the clock. I think she's aware of what we are doing but she's never mentioned it. At no time has she said we were to clock out and keep working. Just wanted to clarify that.

Still,it could be illegal. You are working without being paid and you're not a volunteer. I wouldn't do it, but YMMV.
