WWYD - Dr. related for my 3 year old.

I've had those pills that you are referring, but I thought they were only available with a prescription. But anyway, it does turn the urine kind a reddish-orange, almost like kool-aid, and it definitely relieves the pain, I think actually, it numbs the bladder so that you can't feel the pain.

When I last had a UTI they gave me a prescription for the orange stuff also. It had been almost 20yrs since my last one. It was new to me, never heard about it or seen it. Before filling the prescription I googled it to see what it was. I think AZO came up as OTC stuff.

Now for some stupid reason, whenever I log on to facebook, I get AZO ads on the side.

OP I am sorry for your daughter. UTI's stink and unbelievably painful. I hope she never goes through this again. Now I need to remind myself that the next time I go into the pediatrician's office, I will give him a big hug. We've been blessed with a wonderful ped and great staff. We've gone in on weekends before, never had the wait problem.

Thank you, that is really helpful information. When I thought she had a UTI from the beginning I was really shocked. I didn't have one until I was 19 or something. When I originally called the advice nurse suggested having her pee in the bathtub with warm water to help. I tried to get her to do this but she refused so no luck there. It goes against everything I've taught her, no wonder she is confused!

Her normal ped who called last night and diagnosed with a UTI did so based on the culture they did which takes 24 hours to grow.

The original provider looked at the urine but apparently thought that even though there was blood and white blood cells it was not a UTI.

My feeling is that based on all of her symptoms it was looking like a UTI, she did not explain that in 24 hours once a culture grows things change. She sent us on our way and said DD would be fine and if not to just call back in a few days. This was not ok.

My DGD had this happen to her when she was about 4 and it was terrible. The Dr suggested that we let her soak in a warm tub and that she would just go. I have no idea if that helped but it was soothing for her. The Dr also gave DD cream to help with teh pain and burning and after I had applied it to her seh peed. I rememeber that whole episode, I was caring for the little one that day and took her to the Dr. We never saw how traumatic that day would be.

DGD had cronic UTI's and was tested for reflux, which was negative. She seems to have outgrown whatever was causing them.

I hope that your little one does not go through this again, it seems that the Dr could have communicated better with you so that you knew what was happening with your child. While I understand your hesitation placing a complaint I agree that one needed to registered. No parent should be placed in that position nor should a child be sent away when there is that degtee of pain.

Remember that doctors aren't gods and even the best will sometimes miss a diagnosis. I agree that the facts sound like an obvious UTI but you don't know what the doctor was seeing to make the decision she did. Maybe you should ask her what went into her thinking that day?

With regard to your story...

I wouldn't complain about the wait or the taking patients out of order. That is going to cloud the real issue...that being that the MD did not make a proper diagnosis.

If you know a urine culture is going to "grow out" in 24 hours, and all the symptoms point very strongly to a UTI, I don't know of any MD who will not start the antibiotic.

I believe the 1st MD failed the OP. She should have been given an antibiotic for her child and been able to get at least a couple of doses into her in 24 hours. Had it for some reason not been a UTI, the antibiotic could have been stopped the next day. The lid is 3...unless she has taken antibiotics a nuimber of times in her 3 short years, there isn't a chance that she is going to become "immune" tho their effects or have "superbugs" growing.

My doctor has a saying "When you hear hoofbeats, you don't think zebras". The signs and symptoms the OP presented to the 1st MD:

low grade fever
blood in urine
frequent urination
literally screaming while urinating
says it burns on the inside (her words as a 3 yr old, not mind)

are classic UTI signs and symptoms. The 1st MD is treating the attorneys, not the patients.

AZO Standard, but it is not recommended for those under the age of 12.
