WWYD..career decisions...

So are saying a degree in history is better?

No. I'm saying that anyone who thinks they want to go into nursing because it's easy and you make a lot of money ought to spend some time with Real Nurses. I love nursing. I've been doing it for 32 years. Nursing school was very hard, very demanding 32 years ago and I"m pretty sure that hasn't changed. Just getting accepted into nursing school is a feat in itself--most schools have 1-2yr waiting lists and you must have a 3.6 GPA, plus all your scienc pre-reqs before they will even consider your application. Once you're in school, you have to keep a 3.0 in every subject. And you have to keep that up for 3-4 YEARS. In some schools a single C is enough to get you kicked out of the program. I don't say this as discouragement, but to let you know how demanding and competitive nursing school is. I think you really have to be committed to nursing to undergo this type of training.

My dh is in the same boat as you. He is good at what he does, but it is not his passion - he does it because he has a family to support. He, like you, loves history. He is lucky to be near areas he volunteers for which are very historical - he does tour guides, etc. Have you thought of volunteering like taht? I'm not sure where in florida you are, but st. Augustine would be an example.

I like this idea a lot. I have a BA in History. I've done field work (archaeology), managed an historic house museum, worked for a brokerage firm and moved my way up to corporate trainer at that firm. Currently I'm a sahm.

It is very hard to find full-time work in archaeology. I have a couple of friends who do it year round. They travel to sites, usually several states away. One gets paid about $9.00 an hour, he has a BA. He literally digs and screens all day, then does some documentation at the end of the day. The other is a field director (like a foreman), he has a Master's. Both guys work odd jobs too, to supplement their income, because they often have to wait a few weeks or longer, between gigs.

When I was in the corporate world, I volunteered at sites on weekends. I'd suggest volunteering now, as a way to see if you enjoy it. Remember your hat, bugspray, and sunblock.
