Hi all! I'm new to this board but I've decided to finally get serious about losing these pesky last 20 lbs for our Oct. trip and for me! I think I've decided to do Weight Watchers but wanted some advice from some experts before I dropped the change! I can't do the meetings because I always have my daughter so I'm thinking either doing the online program or purchasing the materials. Would it be beneficial to purchase the materials alone and do the program that way or should I do the online thing? My concern with the online program is what would I do grocery shopping or at restaurants? Just plan ahead? Thanks for any insight you can give me and if anyone just starting out wants to be my WW buddy and do this together let me know!

Thanks again! Patty

I decided to do the at home program. My schedule is just too nutty to be able to do meetings. I tried the online program before, but eventually dropped due to not logging in every day and using the site.

DH and I are both on the at home program and we're doing very well so far. This way I have all the books in front of me to look things up and can take them wherever I go. I go to the online forums like WISH and BCB to get support. I'm taking it 5 lbs at a time.

Good luck with your decision.

As one that has tried both, going to meetings made all the difference to me. The weekend meetings have kids, so that is not a problem. It is the fact that I have to weigh in in front of someone every week that makes me accountable.

If I didn't have to weigh in, I'd do OK for a few weeks then start to slip. Did it before.

I've been a Weight Watchers member since October 2006. I find that going to meetings is much more easier for me than doing it alone at home. If I did it at home I wouldn't be disciplined enough. I need the meetings because the support and tips that my leader and the other members provide is really wonderful - I don't know what I would do without them!

When I'm at meetings there are always a few members who bring in their child. They usually bring something with them to occupy the child. The meetings run 30 minutes.

Good luck!

I have done it both ways and had success with each. The first time I started WW my DH and I were stationed in Italy so attending meetings was impossible. My sister who lost over 100 pounds with sent me the material and I did it on my own. However, in my community we had a small support group of women who were doing different programs and we met once a week to offer support and advice......which is a big key to success. I lost over 60 pounds.

The second time I joined WW was because I had gained 25 pounds, this time I was in the US so I decided to attend the meetings. And to date I am at goal on my last week of maintenance before getting lifetime. Given a choice I would attend the meetings because you learn so much from other members and the support is the greatest by far.

Which ever you chose, come to WISH often because WISH is another part of my success. I have been visiting WISH for 4 years and it has been a great tool in my weight loss success. When I fell off the wagon and started gaining I stopped coming to WISH and the pounds piled on, but once I recommitted and started posting on WISH again the weight started coming off. There are a great group of people here and a lot of them have been with me through the highs and lows and I attribute some of my success to their support.

Good luck!

I would also agree with meetings. If I go to meetings, I lose weight. If I don't, I don't lose weight. I'm not sure why, but I guess being accountable makes all the difference. For some reason if I don't go to a meeting, I give myself excuses about having extra time till the next weigh-in. Once I comit to going and paying I lose the weight. My WW's has mommy and me classes for people with kids. Some people also bring kids with them.

Thanks for the responses, I didn't realize that some WW meetings allowed kids. I'll have to check on that!

Yep they do, I was going to say that... I see kids at meetings all the time!! And I also do WAY better at meeting. The accountablility is awesome, and the support is great too.

Could anyone tell me how you can purchase the materials to do the program at home on your own? I need a set for a man, woman and teen girl...any help would be really great!

I feel the online option is not good for our family as they will not use it and they will not atend metings, but doing the plan at home and weighing in as a family they will.....

Well you could do a couple things... you really need the material, of a book and have the program explained. So you could go to one meeting and pay by week and just not go back. At least get the info that way, or sign up online for a month and get it that way, but I am not sure if there is joining fees that way?? I wouldn't recommend doing it alone without meeting or online though.. you get soooo much support from others and from being accountable at meetings. The only difference in man, women and teen is the amount of point you can eat.. and that is all in the main book or online if you sign up, so you will have all that info. Online tools are great!! You can plug the amounts of fat and stuff into a calculator online and it will give you the points number. Great stuff on there.

I do monthly pass, it is the cheapest. There was no join fee and I pay 34.95 a month direct from my bank account which is 9.22 a week. Its sooo worth it!
