We had our taxes deposited today and it was short $1000:mad: We had our taxes prepared for us by H&R Block. I gave them a call but they said they are not responsible! We paid them $300 to do our taxes and that's the help they offer:scared1:
Anyone else had this happen to them?
And yes I know I should change our withholdings and stop giving the government an interest free loan, but this is just how we do it.

Did you sign a contract with H&R Block? If so, I would read it, I find it hard to believe that they won't help. That's insane. However, we had an issue with the IRS and they were great helping us out.
Good Luck.

Wow! I don't know what to do about the incorrect deposit, but just an FYI, we have a CPA do our taxes and he is $200. I have had a couple of friends in the past use HR Block and they were sorely dissapointed. One of my friend was suspicious of the level of service they were getting from HR so they decided to do their own taxes to compare to what HR did. Needless to say they found several errors. When HR was confronted, they did nothing to make it right. Needless to say, my friend ended filing his own taxes.

Your deposit could possibly be offset by a debt that is owed from the past; i.e. VA benefits, student loans, etc.

I don't know if this helps, but it is a start. Contact the IRS and ask them about your refund. If you go to irs.gov and type in where's my refund and enter the info that you have it may help. What I mean is you enter your expected refund and if there is an issue, i.e. H&R used the wrong amount, it would tell you they received your paperwork, but your information doesn't match their records.

Call the IRS!

If there were any taxes owed the IRS will keep that portion- in our experience they usually send a letter though... :confused3

We did sign a lot of papers after our taxes were prepared. I just went through them. I guess I will be spending my day off tomorrow on the phone with the IRS:sick:

I was leery of H&R Block too but because of a few different things we have to file we just could not do it ourselves. We are not "tax wise" LOL I put another call in to H&R Block. I am trying to kill them with kindness hoping we will get this resolved quickly and painlessly.

And to top it off after checking my acct I found some charges that we did not make and had to close down my debit card. Can this week be over?

We don't owe any debts thank goodness. We have never been married to other people either so no child support/alimony/tax issue.

So close to paying my CC off and now this. Oh well.

Thanks for the advice.

If you had an big swing in pay it could be because of the stimulis checks last year. Did HRBlock put in your taxes that received your stim check, if they didn't the computer would've added that to your refund. Ex. we got a $1600 stim check based on our 2007 taxes, but the stim was for 2008, adjustments were being made this tac season, based on our income for 2008 we qualified for the whole amount upping our refund by $500. Check that first...

I also second going with a local guy. In our area, they range about $100-150 for a typical family's return. Obviously, they go up the more complicated they are.

This happened to us last year and the amount was off by 1800.00. I went on the IRS website and looked it up and it turns out my daughters social security number was punched in wrong. I had to call and they fixed it on the phone so it can be something simple like a wrong number punched in or something could have been calculated wrong.

H&R Block just called me back. THey input our stimulus payments as 1200 instead of 2100 and the IRS noticed and took the additional 900 out of our refund. So it looks similar to what happened to you.

Thanks. I think this just may be what we do. we are buying a house so we will qualify for that tax credit as well and we don't want that messed up.

THanks. He took our kiddos cards with him because we had heard of this happening.

Good thing we weren't counting on that money. I guess:headache:

I would also check with your bank to make sure that's actually your deposit and not anyone else's. It is possible that your return hasn't been sent yet, or is still en route.

It's pretty common for people to give the wrong account number but the right routing number when setting up their tax return for direct deposit.

We used Turbotax to do my DS's and DM's return. I am not computer savy or tax savy. Very easy. I highly recommend it.

I recommend TaxAct, it was easier to use than TurboTax and for us it was free fro Federal and $13.95 for state. I had been paying someone a $100 to do it and decided to di it myself and I had my refund in 8 days from Federal, I don't know when I will get my $100 from state.

Could it be you are still waiting for state. I received my federal on 3/27 and freaked out and called my H & R block person (who is also a personal friend) and she said it was probably w/o state.

Sure enough today 763 more was deposited.

Just a thought..
But one year we had an incorrect amount deposited into our account. When I looked into it further, it was a mistake. It was actually someone else's deposit. I have no idea how that happened, but the bank corrected it once I brought it to their attention. Ours came along a week later.

edited to add: nevermind, saw your update!

THanks for the replies everyone. Turns out the lady at H&R Block entered the wrong amt for the stimulis pamyment (she put 1200 instead of 2100) and the IRS noticed and took the additional 900 out of our refund. Glad the IRS caught it but kind of frustrated we paid H&R Block $300 to mess up:headache:

Complain, and complain some more. The least they can do is give you a % off of what you paid. They signed the return as a paid preparer and they should compensate you in some way. DH used to work for the IRS and he saw errors like this from Block all the time.

Then don't use them again. Find somebody local to where you live, who is an enrolled agent or a CPA. Good luck.

I have to vote with everyone else. Hire a private accountant to do your taxes. My parents used H & R Block for years and always paid upwards of $300. We never knew how much they paid until they passed away and we were looking at their tax documents. My sister had her accountant do their taxes for the year following their deaths, and he only charged $120. He said H&R Block is a rip-off! I would definitely talk to the IRS and find out what the problem is though. Good Luck!
