Writing down every penny spent

:thumbsup2 I always forget about the extra weeks in the month. :thanks: for the tips.

I like the idea of increasing the grocery budget around the holidays. Our Thanksgiving dinner cost an additional $300 on top of the normal weekly amount. I wondered where that $$$ went.

That's what I love about Quicken, I was able to run a report and see our spending patterns. I knew that week to week I was spending our budgeted amount for groceries, and couldn't figure out why some months were higher than others. Bingo, I looked at it and found that I had an extra shopping trip in months with five Saturdays!

I also saw other patterns, like that our entertainment expenses went up in the summer, due to going out to the movies for the summer block busters (normally we wait for it on dvd and put it in our netflix queue) and a few summer trips to the zoo or downtown, and then fall again in the fall/winter/spring as the weather changed and we stayed in more. So I'll build that into our budgets for the summer months when the time comes.

I found that if I took the whole years expenses in any given catagory and divided by twelve, that in the months that I was under the average, that money would "leak away" someplace. Even if I saved it, something would come up and I'd take it from savings anyway. If I budget month by month, I don't have that problem. In months with higher utility bills or other "one time" expenses, I just have less to put towards the CC debt, that's all. And of course we have a savings cushion, so if we have a really bad month, we can cover the shortage. But because I make the budget at the beginning of the month, I can tell it's going to be tight and try and cut back where I can, before the money is spent. Or just be able to transfer money from savings in plenty of time if needed.

this is me: :crazy2: and I haven't even started writing anything down yet!!

Yesterday I did buy a little dayplanner ( which I do need for keeping track of my realtor expenses ) to write everything down in. Then I bought some subs for dinner because it was so late. Then today I went to the grocery store for some dinner stuff for the rest of the week. And I stopped at Kmart and found a s-curve curling iron on sale, and a cute pair of jeans for DD.....

I don't think I'm off to a very good start. :sad2: I do have Quicken, but no idea as to how to use it. I found some budget sheets online I may try to use. Does anyone budget month by month? I have some stuff that isn't due every month, so I don't want to include that every month. :upsidedow

I just started to budget. I have set it up month by month. I have mine in excel,( I may look into quicken). We get paid twice a month. I take one pay day amount and subtract all the fixed items(mtg, car pymt, utilities, etc.) that are due for that time frame. Then the rest is what I use to budget with. I have not broken it down to entertainment, gifts, vacations etc. yet. This is still a work in progress, but I will tweak it as I go along. I don't know how this is going to work as this is my first attempt at budgeting.

Mine too.....and you'd think I would have done it the day I got divorced....
I am determined to see where my money is going. I know it's on stupid stuff, because a few years ago I did a quick tally of everything from my bank statement, and I had spent $70 in just PIZZA. That didn't include other restaurants!!! :scared1: I have since curtailed my pizza habit, but I still need to get some stuff under control.

I have been tracking what we spend since DHs first deployment.

Scrap the little books you forget about them so easily if they're shoved into your purse or in a desk drawer etc Plus you're trying to keep track of the same info twice or three times depending on how you look at it---Him to his book,You to your book and then getting together and calculating them together

I buy a calendar, more specifically the weekly/monthly calendar and this is used for all household purchases so no worrying if hubby input his information or if I put mine into a little notebook

On the month page the first thing I do is write down all the bills and on what day they have to be paid----I have mine set up so I pay bills on 2 days, the first and the fifteenth

At the beginning of the month I write down the bill that has to be paid and the amount next to it,I pay it and when it clears my bank account I put a check mark next to it

We keep our receipts---DH will come home and put whatever receipts he received right onto my desk////I will take the receipt and write down the store and the amount onto the date it was spent and when it clears the bank it gets a check mark

To give you an example this is our entries for the 3rd week of January 2008

13th Chinese 10.00 +

14th DH 21.00 +

15th Star 80.00 +
Cell 66.33 +
Directv 66.08 +
Internet 39.95 +
Netflix 18.06 +
DH 81.00 +
Commissary 56.25 +

16th School Lunch 20.00 +

17th Papa Johns 24.10 +

18th Pharmacy 14.31 +
Family Dollar 23.80 +
Commissary 39.76 +

I like keeping track of everything that goes out,it helps to keep us grounded and makes us truly understand the amount of money that can be spent if you're not paying attention

Something else we do is when DH gets paid on the 1st and the 15th we take any money that's left over in the account from the previous paycheck and put it into a seperate savings account and just watch it add up and use it for vacation or a night out for the two of us...something we haven't already budgeted for.

:thumbsup2 Great ideas. I like the thought of DH giving me his receipts vs calling or writing it down himself. Must be the control freak in me.

Recognizing the patterns is really key. The summer warrants different expenses than does winter, for us anyway. DH and the kids LOVE to snowboard which is much more spendy than going to the pool in the summer, even though we have passes for both, the winter sports cost so much more. :scared1:

$70 for pizza in how much time?

Mmmm pizza. We got 6 more inches of snow and I cannot tell you how good delivery sounds but I am determined to make pasta.

Our biggest budget-'buster' was all the little purchases that quickly added up to big dollars wasted each month. To solve this, on our budget spreadsheet (we just use excel) we have an 'entertainment' $ spot. When we spend any $ on something that wasn't budgeted for we deduct it from that spot. DH has a formula so that when we deduct from that column we can see how it carries over for every pay period for the next 4 months. Our budget is broken down by every two weeks because that is how DH gets paid. Because we are now accountable for that 'fun' money, those purchases have gone down DRAMATICALLY. :)
I love my 'retail' therapy;) so the best way for me to eliminate, honestly, is I stay out of the stores. Instead of browsing:rolleyes1 the stores today for after Christmas sales on stuff I know I don't need, I stayed home and got a lot accomplished (washed all the floors, did some laundry, some much needed organizing and finished my Aladdins Magic Carpets scrapbook page from our Sept trip.) :thumbsup2

eta: It also helps a LOT that I have a very important goal to keep me on track...If we stay on budget for the next few months I will have not only increased our savings to a much more comfortable level, but I will be able to rebook our Sept 09 trip that we had to cancel.

Welcome to the thread! Don't beat yourself up. If you are just starting out with this, what will likely happen at first is that you will become very aware of all the spending you are doing. Then, you may try to go "cold turkey" and not buy anything. Then you will feel deprived and go on a shopping spree.....(I'm using the general "you" here)

Just take it one day at a time. Each time you are about to buy something, stop and really think about it...Do you need it? Do you already have one? Do you have space for it in your home? I think too often we shop mindlessly. I find when I am consciously shopping, I buy so much less, and I come home with things that I NEED and are on my list, rather than things I see in the store and "invent" a "need" for.

eta: It also helps a LOT that I have a very important goal to keep me on track...

I agree with this. I already have a lot of my income "earmarked" for certain things in the future. If I choose to buy _____, then I will be taking away from saving for my other, bigger, more important goal.

For my financial goals I try to have both a $ amount in mind as well as a date for when I'm going to have that dollar amount. Then, I can break it up by months. For example, if I want a $12K emergency fund built up by December, and I already have $6K in that fund, I need to set aside $500 each month this year in order to reach that goal.

:thumbsup2 I like how you carry the amounts over. I really need to invest in a no-brainer program that does that. Neither DH or myself are super computer savvy.

:teacher: That is so smart! I need to get more specific.

I think this is helping already. I'm really thinking about my purchases and having to write them down. Instead of buying a coffe on the the way home and having to write it down and account for it, I went home and made my own!

So this week I spent $555.90 on a biscuit and soda. :scared1:

Everday I WOULD buy a stupid little biscuit and a 20 oz Sprite at work. Started writing it down. Simple, right? Well, I was looking at my handy dandy day timer I bought for this purpose and added it up per week, and then multiplied that by 51 ( 'cause I take one full week of vaca each year.)

Holey Moley. It wasn't even that good. No more biscuits and sodas for me.

I've been doing this for a few years now and it works wonders. I have a spreadsheet set up that has my recurring bills (insurance, utilities, etc...), monthly income and savings in a single column. I actually have savings as an item just like a regular bill, only it never really comes out of the bank, just on paper. I also realize that some months, such as for Christmas or a month when I book a big trip, that savings may lower...and I'm fine with that as long as I keep it in my mind and make that decision.

The results so far?

Last summer, I bought a brand new Honda CRV...and I owe nothing on it!!!

Isnt it eye opening when we actually sit down and take time to figure it all out!:thumbsup2

I remember a few years ago I was getting a Starbucks about 3 times a week. Average 4.50 a day x 3 = 13.50 per week. Even if I only did it 40 weeks out of the year (or bought 120 drinks a year) that was 540.00:scared1: I just got sick thinking of what I could have done with that money instead of drinking it! LOL!

Now I allow myself one per week, no more. Its in the budget and I give myslf an allowance for it. Sometimes I dont even feel like I want them anymore.:confused3

I agree ::yes:: I have been so aware my purchases and having to write it all down that I brought lunch to work 2 out of the 4 days last week. One day everyone ordered out and I declined. :cool1:

Wow! Incredible! :woohoo: That is very motivating! We need a new car but I do not want another loan so we are putting away what we can in hopes of taking advantage of the car deals out there this summer.

I have been documenting every penny and I am happy to report that DH is on board! It took one of our friends telling him how lucky he is that his wife is focusing on saving and not spending for him to realize the value and purpose of my exercise. :thumbsup2

We are planning on moving this summer. Right now I live in NYC and do not need a car. I would like one but it's a luxury here, not a necessity so I hold off...besides, parking is an utter nightmare. Anyways, we WILL need one after we move so it looks like we will be buying one, possibly two :scared: cars in July of this year. There's no way we will have enough to pay cash for even one car so we will need to do the car loan thing. We are talking about getting one that is used from a car rental place because they usually take pretty good care of the cars and usually the mileage is not too bad. My parents always buy their cars from rental car places because the rental car places buy new cars every year and sell off the year-old ones. :thumbsup2

That's awesome that your husband got on board!

Buying a rental car is a GREAT idea!!! Have your parents had any issues with the cars? I think you should be able to find a low rate when you are ready. I doubt we'll have all cash either but I'd be happy with half down. :goodvibes Any kind of car in particular?

:goodvibes Indeed!!!!!

No issues that I know of, other than typical maintenance issues. I believe that the last four cars they have purchased (since like 1996) have been through Hertz. They had a 97 Toyota Camry (that I inherited and sold when I moved to NYC), a 00 Toyota Camry, a ?? Toyota Corolla, and a ?? Honda Accord. They still have the other three and they are still running fine.

I like the Honda Fit but I'm not sure what kinds of cars will be available. I like the concept of buying American-made but my family has had horrible luck with American-made cars in the past. At least when we buy from rental car places we are supporting the rental car places, which are local. If I can't find a Fit, then Honda Accord or Toyota Camry....a Prius would be awesome too. :thumbsup2 Basically, something reliable with decent gas mileage.

What kind of car would you consider?

I hear ya. My friend has a Prius and loves it!!!!!

My FIL retired with Ford so we get great deals. I had a Focus years ago and really loved it so maybe one of those again.

We love a Ford too!! DH has a 1985 Mustang, I bought a 2003 Mustang new, gave it to DS18 when he was turning 16, but DD17 a convertible 2003 Mustang when she was turning 16, sold the first 2003 Mustang and bought DS18 his dream Legend Lime convertible 2005 Mustang and had it shipped in from Indiana, then traded the conv 2003 Mustang when I special ordered DD17's 2008 Mustang! Man, that's a lot of Ponies!!!!
