I read on another board that a few people have used a Sharpie marker and written their cell phone numbers on their childrens arms.

I can see the peace of mind in doing this. Its not a half bad idea, really.

Where do you write it?
If you put it right on their arm that would be in all the pics, wouldnt it? (I know finding my lost child is more important than a 'clean' pic)....
Im thinking it would be better written on the insdie of their hands, maybe?

I dont know....what are your tips for doing this?

Also, are there any other wonderful ideas you have to try to help if your child gets seperated from you?

you can buy tatoos, not permanent ones, to put under your child's arm with your phone number on it. we did this. I don't think the chemicals in a sharpie would be good for anyone's system.

I personally would not do this as I don't want the chemicals from a sharpie sitting on my kids skin. If you google sharpie and writing on skin you will see that it is not advised to do this because it can cause reactions and does have chemicals in it that when absorbed in large doses can be dangerous.

"They [Sharpies] are considered non-toxic for “normal uses,” meaning writing on posters, soccer balls, and such. However, they are not meant for use on skin or fingernails. It might take over an ounce (about 29 milliliters) of ink from a Sharpie to cause a lethal reaction, and if a Sharpie is used on the skin it generally won’t cause an immediate or obvious health effect. However, according to the manufacturer, various Sharpies contain: n-propanol, n-butanol, diacetone alcohol and cresol. The first of these, n-propanol, is commonly used in cosmetics. The other three, however, are industrial solvents, chemicals that should not be sniffed, eaten, or put on the skin. As solvents, they penetrate the skin and fingernails and can enter the bloodstream.

These chemicals are not tested for human consumption, only incidental environmental exposure. So the chemical manufacturers’ technical data sheets on these chemicals are ambiguous with respect to how much should be considered a hazardous dosage, but do warn of kidney, liver, and brain damage, other nervous disorders, and DNA effects resulting in birth defects. OSHA has set permissible exposure limits (PEL) at 100ppm for n-butanol, 50ppm for diacetone alcohol, and 5ppm for cresol."

I believe in the post you are referring to, the poster had an autistic child who would not be able to communicate verbally if separated from his/her parents. Also I believe the poster was concerned about using a name tag or sticker as the child would most likely remove it due his/her autistic sensitivity issues.

I used some card stock and some really cute Disney stickers to make a badge for my dd and then I had them laminated. On our first trip to the World we bought them lanyard and a key chain to attach the name badges to the lanyards. Each trip since then, they get new name badges and new key chains.

They were 4 and 7 the first time we went and had no trouble wearing the lanyards all the time.

Also, once we were in the parks I made sure that the girls could identify who cast members were - their costumes change depending on the area/ride.

We bought some silicone bracelets for our daughter with both our cell numbers on them. They were too big for her wrists so we put them on her ankles. It worked out great. They have several different colors and styles and are not very expensive at all. Here is a link...

TAKING OUR GRANDCHILDREN IN OCT - AGES 5 - 2 AND 1 I AM MAKING BADGES FOR EACH ONE OF THEM WITH NAME AND CELL NBR ON IT WE HAVE ALSO BEEN LOOKING AT PASS VACATIONS AND SEEING THE DIFF COSTUMES THE CAST WEAR AND WHO TO TALK TO IF YOU GET SEP. THE TWO LITTLE ONES WILL BE IN A STROLLER BUT YOU CAN NOT BE TO SURE THEY WILL NOT GET SEP
ENJOY YOUR TRIP:yay:

Mabel's Labels has safety wristbands that are one-time use, so you can make them tighter. www.mabels.ca We are getting them for our next trip. I like them because I can put both of my kids names on when I order them and use them interchangeably. (I have 1 boy and 1 girl, so the names should be obvious) The font is also small enough that only someone close could read the info on it.

I am not entirely sure about putting the child's name on the badge. I worry about the stranger who says..'Hi, Jonnie, Grandma sent me looking for you, come with me.' I know Disney is super safe, but...

I put their names on the back. The front was covered with Disney stickers. Looking at it, you couldn't tell their names were on it.

I would NOT put their names on badges...too easy for a predator to call them away

You can also get a tag engraved with your info and lace it onto one of your kiddo's shoes. They have machines at pet stores and Wal Mart and cost around $5. Lots of color and shape choices AND you can't read it unless you're standing on top of it so there is less worry about strangers getting the info.

I just ordered some really cheap wrist bands (you know like those you get in the neon colors for admission or rides or whatever) that are blank and we are going to write our info on those. I plan to put, "See other side of this if lost" or something like that on the outside, and our phone number and contact info on the other side of it that will be close to the skin. I will let my kids know if they are lost to show a CM the bracelet. I figure I can just use a new one each day. I got hundreds of them for only a few dollars.

Just tell them to look for the WHITE Disney nametags. Only CMs are allowed to wear them. It would be easier for them to remember to look for the nametags instead of what costumes the CM would be wearing. Then when you get on property, you can show them the nametag on a CM just so that they remember what the nametag looks like.

oh for goodness sake!!!

First if you are this worried that must mean you never say your child's name out in public? cause that is the same thing as putting their name on something.

Second every child should know to never go anywhere with someone they don't know so this would not happen.

As far as the sharpie not being good for you, it probably isn't exactly but it has to be in large amounts or half the high school kids in this country would be dropping over cause they all write stuff on them selves with sharpie.

Totally agree. And what is it with kids and Sharpies? I once asked a friend if she had a sharpie on her, and her daughter pulled out from her bag this ginormous ring with sharpies of every conceivable color on it.

Safety Tats (www.safetytat.com and Tottoos (www.tottoos.org) are temporary tattoos you can try.

Who's Shoes ID (www.whosshoesid.com) is worn on the shoe while you can try Guardian Angel Bracelets (www.guardianangelbracelet.com) for a bracelet option.

A low-cost option is to attach masking tape to the inside hem of your child's shirt and use a Sharpie to write your contact information. You can also engrave pet tags or use luggage tags to attach to a belt loop on your child's clothes as long as it can be done safely.

We use

www.idonme.com

Waterproof Tyvek tags inside where you can write cell phone numbers. They are worn like bracelets on the arm or leg.

DD had to use hers this summer. The employee she found opened it up and called our cell phone, and we were reunited in minutes.

Kids DO love Sharpies!!! The smell alone about knocks me out.

Just wondering (I've never "i.d.'d" my child before)...shouldn't the child be old enough to know where to look for all this identification? If a two-year-old is lost and crying, he/she might not have the sense to look on his shirt/under his arm/in his shoe for phone numbers, names, etc., and if it's that well hidden, a staff member won't know either, and certainly won't go tearing their clothes apart looking for information.

Just sayin'...

It's worth giving it a try, anything to help if a child wonders off. IMO.
