Basketball's Shaquille O'Neal pays for North Carolina girl's funeral By Hank Bishop, CNN

(CNN) -- Professional basketball star Shaquille O'Neal paid for the funeral of a 5-year-old North Carolina girl whose body was found last week, O'Neal's team confirmed Thursday.

Authorities believe the child, Shaniya Davis, was kidnapped, raped and murdered after being reported missing November 10. Her body was found six days later on a roadside about 30 miles from her hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her funeral was Sunday.

O'Neal said in a statement released by his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, that he was touched after seeing Davis' story on CNN sister network HLN's "Nancy Grace" show.

"What happened to her was tragic. I wanted her to have a funeral that would be as beautiful as she was," O'Neal said in the statement.

Corey Breece, of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, told the Fayetteville Observer he wouldn't discuss the cost of the child's service, but he noted a child's funeral "averages around $4,500."

The girl's father, Bradley Lockhart, and his family had set up a trust fund to help raise money to pay for the service, according to the Fayetteville Observer.

Family friend Vaughn Eason told the paper any remaining money would be used for groups and charities working to assist abused and neglected children.

Police have charged Mario Andrette McNeill with kidnapping and said he also will face murder and child rape charges.

Preliminary autopsy results indicated the child was asphyxiated, Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine told reporters last week, as authorities awaited final autopsy reports.

Davis' mother, Antionette Nicole Davis, has been charged with human trafficking and other offenses. Police have said they believe she was prostituting the girl.

O'Neal, as a volunteer for law enforcement agencies in recent years, has been active in causes that deal with domestic violence issues, mainly child-abuse cases.

I hadn't heard that! That poor little girl. Nice that Shaq helped the father take care of the "final resting place" for her.

I heard the story yesterday. I think anyone that saw that video of the child being carried into a hotel room all felt horrified at the discovery of her body. Good for Shaq! Good for the 2000 mourners who turned out to her funeral. America always has a heart and a soul.

I heard about that on cnn this afternoon. The story about the little girl is so sad and may she rip:sad1::sad1:  to the little girls father and brother. Im sure they are very thankful for Shaq stepping up and doing this for them. Its such a thoughtful thing.

We saw this story on CNN yesterday. I agree with you about having a new respect for him. We started reading to see if he has a connection to our state (NC) and didn't find one. It was a wonderful thing for him to do.

That poor, poor little girl.

I'm from NC, so this has been all over our news. Did anyone see the rap sheet for the man responsible? He had already been convicted of a triple shooting and maybe a robbery (can't remember exactly) why was he not in prison? It makes me sick to my stomach to imagine think about what that beautiful little girl had to live through that day.

what a tragic story, but kudos to shaq for stepping up and lending a helping hand so that beautiful little girl could have a proper funeral. THAT is how professional athletes SHOULD distinguish themselves. it's nice to know there are still some good guys out there.

We have seen a lot about this as well. It is so sad. I don't understand how these people get off so easily. Just like the guy in Asheville who gets something like 4 months for attempted murder. These aren't the things that make me feel proud to be from NC.

Exactly!

What an incredibly generous thing for him to do. A very classy man.

while i'm generally a cynical jerkwad, i'm really impressed by this, because i highly doubt he would have done this for anything but genuine reasons - it's not like he needs the publicity or anything. The article notes that he has long been involved in domestic violence issues, so it's really nice to see such a star practice what he preaches.

I can't believe tougher laws don't get passed for sex offenders. It shouldn't be a partisan issue and it's been shown over and over that they DON'T GET BETTER.

I've known Shaq for quite a few years (not like we're personal friends or anything:lmao:) we've worked on charity events together. He does many many good things and doesn't want the publicity, he truly has a good heart. When the Lakers trained in Hawaii he did alot at the military bases there. My DH is Navy and was in Tripler Army hospital for emergency surgery at about 2am and in walked Shaq, woke up the entire peds department(ok not everyone, just the ones not so ill) and had a little party. The next day the press was trying to find out how this kid had a signed sneaker (which was HUGE!) he had promised not to tell and didn't, just sat there with a huge smile on his face! Not everyone does things just for good press. His mama lives in the development right behind us and believe me she is the reason he is so grounded. They are a very nice family. My heart just breaks for that little girl, there are truly evil people in this world.

We were reading where he is part of a task force (or something similar) to help catch these predators. Way to go Shaq! We need more people like him out there. These celebrities need to use their status to do more good like he does. :thumbsup2

I heard an interview several years ago and was impressed by him. he said that he was taught how to live up to his parents expectations and he tried never to let them down. I had not heard about his compassion in this instance but I am not surprised.
