I am trying to put together a basket and some information together for my dear friends who have recently, and somewhat suddenly, adopted an infant. Please share with me what products you think are the best of the best, things you could not live without for your baby. Thank you.

I could not have survived without my exersaucer. It kept the baby entertained while I got a shower or made dinner and it was easily transportable---so he could be in the kitchen with me while I'm cooking or in the family room watching an Einstein DVD (another must- have!)

Baby wipes are definitely a man's best friend. Oh yeah, get the unscented kind.

Vibrating bouncie seats

The foamy shampoo with the pump dispenser (I like the nighttime lavender scent)

Aveeno diaper rash cream

Sassy baby toys- not a necessity, but both my kids LOVED them

Congratulations to your friend! You can never have enough onesies, burp clothes or drool bibs. For bigger gifts a battery operated swing, pack n play, exersaucer, bouncy seat all come to mind. AFR's idea of the diaper genie is great - that thing is a godsend. I also love all the different things Sassy makes from toys to feeding stuff to grooming stuff. They're cute and practical.

I recently made up a Moses basket for my sister...here's what I put in it....

What to Expect the First Year or What to Expect the Toddler Years...I love these books

spit-up diapers (cloth diapers)

binkys and holder

onesies

sleepers with feet...babies don't stay still for long

teething toys

You could also put in....diapers, wipes, formula, bottle supplies, bathing supplies

The one thing I love is our swing...I know it won't fit in a basket but our children always love to swing.

Congratulations to your friends!!!

Our youngest DS is now five. Our safety locks for cabinets are basically a joke when a two year old can figure out how to get around them (but not mom or MIL  ). Now I've seen two different moms with magnetic safety locks. The magnet stays on the fridge (for example) for storage. When a cabinet needs to be opened, just hold the magnet up to the door! I thought it was really need and the door won't open at all.

Glow in the dark pacifiers and mylicon drops were nice to have.

do you have a link to these locks? I've never seen them before!

oh, I agree about the milicon drops

The Land's End Diaper bag was fabulous!

The Excersaucer - gotta have one of those!

Good luck to your friend!

I always do a basket and put in the things that everyone always needs but are forgotten along with a package of diapers. Things such as:infants tylenol, baby spoon, wipes, washcloths, powder, baby wash, diaper rash medicine, few jars of baby food, rattle, coupons, finger nail clippers, baby comb and brush, etc etc. You can really use your imagination with this one as it is well appreciated! The basket can then be used for display or storage for toys, diapers, stuffed animals etc.

What you mean besides the obvious- disposable diapers:laughing:

I know I am going to torture the spelling on this Mycolyn Drops-baby gas drops, I don't think I would have slept the first three months if it weren't for these (not that he needed them everynight, but when he did boy was I glad to have them)

Tylenol infant drops
AD ointment -not cream
cloth diapers for burp cloths(easier to bleach)

I just had a baby 8 weeks ago and here is my list:

Bouncy Seat (we have the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders)

cloth diapers (we use disposables, but these are great for when she spits up, or things get messy. We use one for something constantly!)

tons of onesies...its pretty hot here in the summer, and usually she just wears a onesie...sometimes we go through several per day. I have some cuter ones from Gap, Gymboree etc. that are actually more like little outfits.

diaper genie

breast pump (we had breastfeeding issues at the beginning)

Avent pacifiers

A great diaper bag - the diaper bags from Lands end are great and reasonably priced. The black microfiber one has a pale blue lining which is great...no "black hole" effect when you are digging for stuff!
funny....the Kate Spade ((a gift from a childless friend) diaper bag has been pretty much unused!

My Podee baby bottle. Don't laugh , this made my life a lot easier when I was shopping and the baby was hungry or was driving on a long trip , or simply just going for a walk with the stroller.

BTW, they are found at Toys R Us.
Sorry but I just realized that my dd is the one logged on this computer, this is Mskanga.

Call me dumb, but I do not understand how the Podee bottle works! Please explain.

I haven't used one before, but it looks like the baby can drink their formula without having to hold the bottle; they can just suck on the nipple like a pacifier. (for babies that are too young to be able to hold the bottle).
