WOW! Columbia sent a new jacket!!

If it is guaranteed for the life of the jacket, then regardless of who owns it, it's the jacket's life. The number of owners should be of no relevance.

Except if you check out their website it very specifically says:

How Long This Warranty Lasts. This Warranty lasts for as long as you, the original purchaser, own the Outerwear. Coverage ends if you sell or transfer the Outerwear.

So..yeah, technically the OP should not have been covered by their warranty. But, Columbia is a fantastic company and stand behind their stuff YEARS after you have purchased something.....one of those "wow, I can't believe you're going to replace it, I just wanted to buy a replacement part to fix it myself!" type company. Yeah, OP probably should have mentioned that, but honestly, it probably wouldn't have stopped them. They are one of those companies that wants LOYAL customers and knows the fastest way is to treat you better than just "well".

Give me a brake, they dont have a policy stating original owner. But to feel guilty about not telling them that it came from goodwill thats just your own guilt. They didnt ask her if she was the original owner they just sent a new jacket no questions asked. As for the op:woohoo: good for your son.

Well, yeah, their policy does specifically say original owner...it says:

How Long This Warranty Lasts. This Warranty lasts for as long as you, the original purchaser, own the Outerwear. Coverage ends if you sell or transfer the Outerwear.

But, in another part of the warranty page it says that your original receipt or other proof of purchase may be required....I guess since they didn't ask her for that which they could have and then would have discovered she wasn't the original owner....well, they just wanted to make a customer happy. And really, she was a customer because her son will now be wearing that jacket for years to come (unless he leaves it on a hillside in Spain, lol).

And OP...let the boy enjoy his trip...forget that price tag. If he loses it you're out your $5....he'll be building memories for a lifetime, don't include the "don't get your clothes dirty" in those memories, lol.

D'oh... I usually notice it too. But most the time, it's strange topics that wind up getting bumped. This one seemed too normal.

LOL...I didn't notice and I responded to two different posts, lol. Uh oh.

Oh well, maybe it's a Columbia employee hoping to boost sales......regardless it really IS a great company with great products. They're more expensive intitially, but since it's likely to be the last jacket (or tent or whatever) that you ever have to buy because they are so well made it's worth it in the long run.

They did something similar for me once about ten years ago. The zipper on the liner broke and when I asked about finding a replacement liner, they sent me another (much nicer) jacket. Needless to say, I'm a loyal Columbia shopper and I've told that story to lots of people over the last decade.

My mom told me she bought a used Fisher Price baby bouncer at a yardsale, but one of the toys was missing. When she contacted FP about buying the missing toy, they sent her a postage-paid envelope to return the bouncer. She explained that she had bought it at a yard sale, and the customer service rep said it didn't matter, FP stood behind their products. When she got the bouncer back, it was a brand-new one, (the latest version of the one she'd bought). She was very pleased!

They are no-longer that nice. My dad took a look at one of their infant swings for one of the ladies he works with. It would only go one speed and it was so slow without a child in it. My dad is very handy and can fix a lot of things. He called up FP and they told him the swing was too old they can't send him any parts and didn't know what was wrong with it.

I think the quality has gone downhill since Mattel took over. I have a great story about them!

About 4 years ago I bought DD a beautiful Columbia jacket. It still looks great, except the lining is turning yellow. I never thought of contacting the company, but I guess I should.

Actually, you would be incorrect. Here is how the warranty is stated on Columbia's website:

LIMITED WARRANTY - OUTERWEAR
(DOES NOT APPLY TO FOOTWEAR OR SPORTSWEAR)
SEND YOUR CLAIM USING A TRACKABLE SHIPPING METHOD

What This Warranty Covers. This Limited Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship in outerwear manufactured by Columbia Sportswear Company (Outerwear). This includes defects in zipper pulls, zippers, snaps, stitching, dye bleeding, leaking of Columbia's waterproof Outerwear line, and any other Outerwear defects that may occur under normal wear. Columbia does not warranty and is not responsible for damages caused by misuse, abuse, accidents, the natural breakdown of materials over time, or problems that may be reasonably expected with normal wear or failure to follow Outerwear care instructions.

How Long This Warranty Lasts. This Warranty lasts for as long as you, the original purchaser, own the Outerwear. Coverage ends if you sell or transfer the Outerwear.

How To Get Warranty Service. You may seek resolution directly through the retailer where you purchased the Outerwear. In many cases, the retailer will be able to assist you. You may also send Outerwear (including any shell, liner, and other components), shipping prepaid, (you pay to ship the item to us, we pay to ship the item back to you) directly to us.

The OP is lucky that Columbia replaced the coat, but they were not under any obligation to do so.

Thanks for this information. I purchased my granddaughters winter coats last year and they are Columbia and are great coats. This is good to know in case anything happens to them upon washing (or wear). I really like this brand and buy the grandkids coats and hats. I hadn't realized that there was such a good policy covering them. Most likely they will outgrow them before anything bad happens to them.

Thanks OP for reminding me. DD10 has a Columbia fleece and the zipper pull broke. I am going to try to return it to the store first, and if they won't take it, I will send it to Columbia.

Same here. My daughter actually broke hers at WDW. I have always sworn by Columbia products and this is just another reason why I will continue to purchase their products. :)
Off to package up that fleece!

I would have called and asked why the liner would have disenigrated but when they offered to replace it, I would have told them exactly where I purchased it and that it was not new and I wasn't the original owner. If I didn't I would feel as though I was cheating them, if they still decided to send it knowing all the info then I wouldn't feel guilty about accepting it.

Its good to know they stand behind their products, For Christmas, I got dh a very expensive Columbia jacket for skiing that I wouldn't want to replace in a year.
