Would you trust a "walk-in" salon to color your hair?

I'm in dire need for a a dye job and hair cut. I look like a shaggy skunk right now. :rotfl2:

I called my normal salon, and have to wait at least a month to get in. Since I may get an interview in the next week or so, I need something faster. Would you trust a walk-in salon for such a job? It's kind if like a enhanced SuperCuts, but not that brand (It's called Holiday Hair). I've gotten my hair cut there before and it's been fine, but nothing fabulous. I'm afraid of having purple hair when I'm done.

Depends, I work in a walk-in salon and the average girl working has at least 12 years experience.

You could go to a exclusive salon and pay 5 times more and get the some color product and a styist with less experience.

I've seen some pretty damaged hair thats come out of exclusive salons.

First find a hairdesser that your comfortable with, make sure she knows color.

I guess it all comes down to, how good of a salon are you walking into.

Well, they are licensed hair cutters and all......... If you can't get a recommendation from a friend, I would go with them. Actually, we go to Holiday Hair all the time (although we all just get haircuts).

The only way I would go to a walk-in salon for a color is if someone referred me to a stylist in there. If they had gotten their hair colored by someone in there and was pleased, I would try it. But just to walk in and say "color me", no way.

I have gone to the same stylist since I was about 6 years old! :) :) :) He French braided my hair when I was a little girl and now he is doing my coloring too! I don't know what I will do when he retires :(

Yes and no.

We have some walk-in salons here, a chain, called the Hair Cuttery. This is where the stylists come right after walking out of school. It is very cheap. I've seen some good cuts/highlights out of there and then I've seen bad.

Then there are the more mid-level chains (we have one here called Bubbles and then there are some others). They are fine. I use the Bubbles near my house and most of the women have been there for years and have TONS of experience. They are more pricey than the Hair Cuttery, but cheaper than the exclusive salon.

So, I think if you find the mid-level one, you will be fine.

That's how I found my present stylist :)

My sister works at First Choice Haircutters and they offer a money back guarantee. In fact there is a "nice" salon down the way from them and people come to First Choice to get their hair fixed by the people who messed it up at the "nice" place. They have even have people who called the police at the other place because they messed their hair up so bad and wouldn't fix it. I'd say find a First Choice Haircutters. They have reasonable prices too. Of course I get a family discount. ;)

I had the same problem as you last month - couldn't get into my regular person, and needed a color NOW.

I went to a walk in salon on a Sunday. Mastercuts, in the mall. I got a really young girl - only 19 - and I was so nervous. She did a GREAT job. I went from long brown hair with highlights to a short red shag. I love it...it was REALLY red for about 3 days, but washed out into a really nice color.

I decided I am going to stick with her since it was half as much as I usually pay, and I really like it.

It depends, some places I would trust more than others. There are a couple of walk ins in our mall that really are upper level (but not as expensive as my salon) that I would trust. I might be willing to go there.

A place that you can walk in and get a $15 cut? Nope... I've gone to places like Saturday's and First Choice and walked out there with awful cuts. One at First Choice was so bad that I went back in 10 minutes later (after it fully dried) and said they needed to try to fix it. What I didn't realize was their money back guarantee (according to the store) was the the person who did it, would re-cut it again. Um NO THANK YOU! I fought that one and got a different stylist to do it. It wasn't good but it was good enough until I could go somewhere else.

Same thing from Saturday's though with the wax she put in my hair, I didn't notice the cut until the next day. So, I had someone else fix that for me. It took a year to get the layers right.

After those experiences there is NO WAY I would do color in a walk in place on those levels.

You can always go in and talk and see if you trust them. I presume you've gotten your hair colored before, so you could probably get an idea if they seem to know what they are doing or not.

I must say if it takes a month to get into your salon, I would look for another. The absolute longest I have had to wait is a week (unless my stylist is on vacation) Good luck :)

I have been to several walk in salons. Holiday being one of them and was very unhappy with my dye job. I wanted to go blond I have Med Brown hair so I told them I needed to have my hair bleeched to do this and they said they had this new product that they could use in my hair to bring it as light as I wanted but they said it would take longer because they would have to do the process a couple of times. I said no problem but I still say it needs bleeched ( I know showed have left.) but they do have more education then me when it comes to this so who was I to question them. Needless to say after for chemical treatments it still looked horrid. They told me to comeback the next day and they would fix it needless to say I called back the next day to see when I could come in because thats what they said to do conviently the hot water heater broke and couldnt do anything. Ended up calling the companies HQ and they said to go to one at another mall about 2 miles away from that mall and they had to do 3 more chemical processes to it just to get it right. So in 2 days I had 7 chemical processes done to my hair.

Went in to another one called Mane Event ( not even here anymore) burned my hair with the perm I had gotten I eventold them that my hair was colored before hand.

Not a big fan of walk in but that is mostly what is in my area. So I have decided that I can mess my hair up just as much as they can so I basically color it my self plus it is cheaper.

I'd just ask for someone that loves color! And be specific in describing the color you want. I stick with one salon, and everyone seems to add their own liking to the color. I've gotten specific...dark brown, NO RED in it!! Loved the way the last person did it. I'll stick with her. She had a choice when we walked in...coloring my long hair, or doing a quick haircut on my son. She chose the color. :teeth:

As a hairdresser in a former life of mine, I can tell you that I HATED cutting and LOVED color!! :teeth: :thumbsup2

Pretty good advice from Pin Wizard ... ask for someone who loves color. They'll either light up and one name will jump to everyone's mind, or they'll all look at you confused. If the latter, leave. :)

I go to a "walk in" haircuttery to get my color done...most of them are right out of school, but there are a few ladies that have been there for years and years--i go to one of them..she does a great job and its not as expensive as some other places

It would really depend on if I had friends who had used the place. The one time I didn't get a recommendation I ended up with fried hair and had to go to a pixie cut that was AWFUL to get rid of the damage. Needless to say I am very very very leery now.

Well...I've personally never set foot in a "fancy" salon...$15 haircuts all the way for me! I have shoulder length hair with long layers so I don't even get my hair cut that often. When I get highlights, I go to the walk-in place as well and have been happy so far. I've moved now, and I'm going to take my chances again soon. I would go for it - good luck! :)

I go to haircolor specialist. All they do is haircolor, it makes the world of difference, at least in my opinion. It's not cheap though.

Lucky for me, I've grown out of my hair coloring days.
