My hairdresser a couple of years ago left the salon she was working at because child care was just too much. She ended up making a business in her house and converting a room in her basement into a salon (it actually looks like a mini salon, complete with a separate entrance). She charges a flat fee for her haircuts. I'm assuming that the rate she charges covers the cost of expenses and business licensure, and then some. I am at a loss as wether or not I should tip her. Yes, she is still providing me a service, however, since she isn't paying a rental fee for her chair (as most hairdressers have to), and she isn't dependant on her tips to cover the cost of her business (that would be covered in the cost of the hair cut itself), I don't know if I should leave extra for her.

Thoughts?

If your justification for tipping a stylist is usually that they have to rent their chair- then her cost of running her business is higher than the cost of renting a chair. By comparison she needs the tip more than a stylist renting the chair.

I find it strange when people say you tip the employee and not an owner, considering that the employee is charging the same rate and has fewer expenses.

Don't get me wrong...I don't mind tipping. I was in a tipping dependent profession for 12 years, so tipping is not a problem. I just don't know if I should in this situation. It feels awkward to hand her an extra $10 in comparison, for some reason.

She charges the same amount for her cuts in her own home as she did in the salon.

If I was happy with her services, I would continue to tip her - regardless of where she has her business set up..:goodvibes

When I do clients hair at home vs the salon, I tell them they don't have to tip me. Because I keep all the money. I don't have to split it with the salon. Some of my clients still tip me. But I also charge less at home than the salon charges. So when someone comes to my house and tips me too, it is still less expensive for them than going to the salon.

Not sure if that helps or not. Just what I do.

If she charges the same for the cut in a salon as she does in her home, then if you tip her - the cut is costing the same if you tip at her home salon or if you tipped her at the salon.

I would tip her...and then it is on her to let her know if she would prefer not to receive tips.

I tip because I'm happy with services received not because of how someone is renting space or not.

I used to have a hairstylist with a home salon and I tipped her as well as a Christmas bonus. She charged me less than she did at the salon and gave me shampoo and things at cost.

I felt I received great service with her and showed through my tip.

I think if she is charging salon prices for home services, she is factoring in *no tips* - aside from you liking her service, going to a person's home salon should save $$.

I'd still tip. A tip isn't just about the money. A tips says I approve of your services, thank you! If you don't tip, I think it's an insult. Just my 2 cents.

First, it is never wrong to tip.
A tip shows appreciation beyond the fee/cost of the service.
Whether to tip or not to tip should not really be that big of a decision.

That said, you have to do what you are comfortable doing.

When it comes to hair salon, since we are long time customers and get the same thing every time....boys get same cut, I get shampoo/cut no blowdry or styling, etc.....I always tip the same, which is not a certain percentage but a nice tip. For boys cuts....$15, tip is $2, for mine or DDs tip is usually $5. I view it more as consistancy.

I've been to hair stylists at the salon and home-based stylists. I tipped both. Never really thought about it.

I still tip my hairdresser when she does my hair at her home - I tip her because I love how she does my hair. I live in SC and still get my hair done in NJ!!

Normally you are not supposed to tip salon owners if they are the ones who do your hair and I would think a hair dresser working out of their own home falls in the same category.

That said, it doesn't hurt to tip, but I would think its not expected in this situation.

I know I am probably a little older than most of you ladies, but I was always taught that you don't tip the owner of a business. The owner of the salon always does my hair. Now I'm feeling bad not to have tipped her if I should have been. When did this change?

Thanks to Google. . .Miss Manners says 'No, you do not tip the salon owner if she does your hair.' Emily Post, on the other hand, says there is no rule that says tipping the salon owner is wrong and you should simply ask her if she accepts tips.

If she is charging the same as the salon prices, in effect she is already receiving more for her services than at the salon. I would say tipping would be appropriate if she were to accommodate you last minute or do some other special favor for you in regards to your hair without charging you extra. The total price of the haircut should be what it is worth to you. If she were charging half as much and you feel it was worth more, then a tip is in order to show that you think it was worth more to you. However, if you feel she is charging the maximum you would pay, I would just thank her very much and pay what she is asking. The fact that you continue to support her by going to her home is a statement of support in and of itself. It does not need a tip to convey that. If you feel uncomfortable not leaving a tip, why not just leave $1 or $2? $10 sounds excessive.

I have 2 friends that cut hair in their homes. One charges the same as her salon, the other charges less. Way less. She gets tips 50% of the time. The one that charges more rarely gets tipped.
I would tip if I really liked the way she cut my hair. I don't go to either of them because I don't want to pick. Although I would go with the cheaper one because I like her cuts better.

YES YOU PAY A TIP!!!!

Do you like her services?? Then you pay a tip. Give me a break!

I would tip her. Even though she is in her home, and is setting her own prices, she still has the costs to set up and maintain her business. I always thought that you don't tip salon owners because not only do they make their money when they cut hair, they also make money from the others working in the salon.
My hairstylist rents a chair in a salon/beauty supply store. I tip her because I think she does fabulous work at reasonable prices. I tip to show my appreciation, and I would tip her regardless of where she worked.
However, I have friends who also see the same hairstylist and not all of them tip. I asked my hairstylist about the tipping situation and she said tips were never expected, but always appreciated.

That's the rule I always heard as well... but I'm not sure if it's still right. I know my mom goes to a shop where the owner does her hair and she does not tip. She does buy her a Christmas gift, however.

I think a stylist basically gets paid 50% of the cost of the service performed. So, if a haircut is $20 - $10 goes to the stylist and $10 to the salon. If you are still paying $20, she's getting it all. However, she does have the operating expenses of the shop + the materials, etc. But, I'd assume that would all be figured out in teh cost for the haircut, no?

Bottom line... I don't know :)
