Would you think this is a scamer?

Yesterday my father had a young man come to the door asking for a donation. He said he lives around the corner and his mother has colon cancer.My father talked with him outside and then the man asked if he had air conditioning, could he come insde. At that point my Dad went in and the guy left. He told my mom and my mom told him a similair looking young man came by last year, lived around the corner and his mother has MS. My mom sponsored him and never heard from him again.

I'm home today, we're in a 2 family home BTW. My parents went out and I see a young man go up to my aunt's house next door. I call to warn her but she doesn't answer the phone. I kept my eye on the guy and after he leaves her house, he rings my parent's bell. I have access to their house so I go answer the door. I don't open it and ask what does he want. He says his name and he lives around the corner. He says my father was going to sponsor him. So I say What is your address, we'll come to you. He rattles off an address in the next community over. He leaves. My aunt gave him 10 and when she asked for a receipt he replied I'll mail it. He had no official documents, only names of people who gave him money. How would I go about finding out if he is a scammer like my instincts say?

call the policy non emergency number. They will know. Sounds like a scam to me!

Not only does it sound like a scam, but I'd be concerned that he's looking to get other info to burglarize the house or something. In most communities you need a permit for door-to-door solicitation, I'd ask him for that an ID if he comes around again, and then tell him to not come back. If he comes back again after you've told him not to you can have him arrested for a variety of things.

And if you can't bring yourself to be assertive like that, simply tell him you'll make a donation to the MS foundation or the cancer foundation in her name.

He sounds like a scammer and a thief if he gets the chance. I wouldn't answer the door or let him in or give him money, nothing. I'd call the police next time he shows up.
