Would you sell it outright or rent the points?

My H and I live in CA and haven't been able to use the points like we hoped we would. H entered a new job in 2002 that has made him a workaholic.

Because of his time contraints, we have had to bank at least twice without a trip and take come Interval "credit".

I want to learn more about renting points-he is ready to sell because the yearly fees keep going up and we have'nt been able to enjoy the club! I am really, really sad, because in 2003 we had a blast with DVC on the Disney Cruise. It just seems like we really struggled this year paying our dues, but we dont have the time to ENJOY it.

How big of a hassle is it to rent? I have no clue where to read and look for such info. Should we just bail out and sell it off? We originally were not planning to do this for a few years.

Thanks!

Look on the rent board which is part of this DISBOARD...I think they have a FAQ section.

Rather than rent you could also transfer the points to another DVC member. "Technically, you cannot receive money in return for the points, but.....
Transferring can be better cause once you transfer the points...they are gone...no returns allowed and no refunds. Some people prefer this since when you rent there is always the possibility of the renter wanting to back out at the last minute...no matter how iron clad your agreement is. Also, you are dealing with another DVC member when you transfer which can be more secure.

Selling your contract is so....final...while transferring or renting can be done for 1 or a few years, but you still have the long term benefit of the contract still available to you.

Good luck...

If we didn't use our points for a period of 2-3 years, my inclination would be to sell. Especially if it's a struggle to pay the dues.

You said that your Dh can't travel, but what about you? Can you go with your mom/sister/friend. It is a lot cheaper when you are only paying for your air and food. In a couple of years, maybe your Dh won't be so busy and can travel with you.

Did you finance or is the balance paid off?

Without more details I would say if you are having issues making Dues payments, JUST SELL.

If you have friends and/or family that plan on traveling down you may want to rent to them, but that is not a long term solution IMO.

I have rented my points before, so I am somewhat biased, but I would try to rent the points if I thought I was going to use them eventually. It's a good way to cover your dues and give you some extra cash, while still keeping the contract for your future use. If you financed a loan on the points, though, I would say to sell it. The charge for the sale is about 12%, so you may lose on the sale, though. 150 pts would get you around $1500 per year if you decide to rent(transferring to another member is pretty much the same thing), so it might be worth your while to consider keeping the contract if you stand to lose a considerable sum. :cheer2:

In your post you state in 2003 you used your points and loved it. 3 years later things in life have changed for you guys and what about 3 years from now your husband might work hard enough to earn a promotion or a better job with MORE vacation time . I think if it was me I would wait a year or two and see what happens. Either way Good luck , and happy vacationing.

I have also heard rumors on the board about a new DVC resort coming to DisneyLand. You can currently use your points there anyway to stay at their hotels and it is even less points for 2006 than previously. Also there may be a DCL cruise sailing from California you could use them on.

BUT... if owning DVC is causing you anxiety, sell. You can probably get all of your money back and have one less financial worry. Life is too short.

I appreciate the responses. Well, H is one of those guys that feels if we can not aaaaaaall go on a vacation together-what's the point? I think I might use this years points for me at the kids at Disneyland. I think we need to USE them-even if he is not a part of it.

I think we could hold on another year or so-because I know next year we are available and should be sound to go on another Discruise. I really would like to hang on to DVC, because when you actually use it the way you intend to....it's SO worth it.

I will have to educate myself further about transferring points? Why transfer if you dont get any money for them? Huh?

Technically per DVC you are not allowed to get/give money when a point transfer occurs, but..... what DVC doesn't know...... :rolleyes1

Transferring points is a pretty painless transaction between to DVC members. You can post a request or answer one from another member. You call DVC tell them you want to transfer points into another account and that's about it. I have had points transferred into and out of my account and both time the transactions were completed within 3 hours of posting on the DVC boards. :thumbsup2

Good luck with your decision. I know I would go crazy if I didn't have my DVC to look forward to!

Sell Mortimer, sell!

Once you get out from under the burden you can simply rent points yourself whenever you need them.
