I was just on the rent/trade board because I am bored and there is a person there who has posted his NAME and phone number along with the dates he wants to go to Disney.

Is it just me or does this strike you as risky? I like you guys and I don't mind giving most of you my name or stuff, but I am not posting it on a public message board that for all I know Ted Bundy is reading!

I'm with you, CarolA--it would make me pretty uncomfortable to post my phone number/name --or even mailing address.
(I know people who are convinced that sending personal info via email (like SS#, credit card #'s) is totally secure, too--certainly it is not as public as posting on a BBS or discussion list, but definitely not fully secure. . .unless maybe you are into super-encrypting your email!) :surfweb:

I agree would not post this info.

OK. So we all agree. I wish the guy who did it would go remove this data. (I am not going to call him and suggest it, but I think it's just not a wise move. There are lots of people with idiot ideas cruising the web today!)

Not only do I find that risky, but I cringe when people post when they are going to WDW and for how long. For those of you who only list your state or a big city in your name & signature it might be OK. For those who live in smaller places I would think it might not be that hard to figure out who you are, where you live, and now, how long you will be out of town!

I would not post my name and phone number --

Never thought about the idea of giving info about when you will be out of town
and where you are from ...

food for thought !

My parents used to remind me about not leaving that info on our home answering machine, either.
I suppose you could be tracked down thru some of the visible info you put in your profile; after all, look what happened to the aol users info just earlier this week! Even though they had user numbers and no names, people were able to figure out who some of the people were just by what they searched online.

Good point. I know about phishing and I try to be smart about what I do on the internet, but hadn't thought about this. Guess it's because I think of the folks that post here as honest people that wouldn't take advantage of others. Kind of an extension of the Disney feel. One of the things that DH and I consider about people that go to Disney is that for the most part they that have worked hard to be able to go to Disney and are therefore responsible types that one can trust. And we bump that up a notch for the DVC members.

I can't believe that someone would post that kind of info nowadays. I certainly wouldn't post my name and number! But, I really hadn't thought about the posting of trip plans!

I'm not getting what the risk is with posting your name and phone number. My name, phone number and address are all printed in the phone book - and can be found online by just about anybody

I do understand that it's probably not a good idea to post "here is where I live and these are the dates my house will be empty". But the general concept of posting name and number just doesn't seem that horrifying to me.

One night we started getting phone calls at 1-2 am in the morning from someone saying he was the anti-Christ :scared: On the 3rd night we did the *69 and got the number of the caller. Turned out it was in Newfoundland! DW called our local police, but they wouldn't provide any help so she called the police in Newfoundland and they happily gave us the name, address and any other info we needed. We called the number and talked to the father of the anti-Christ. He had his own father/son talk, called us back and told us the anti-Christ wouldn't be contacting us any more and that his son had gotten our name and number from OUR DAUGHTER in a chat room. :sad2:

On one of the other boards here about a year ago, someone posted their personal info, and a lot of us warned her about posting that info. The info in her post was deleted by a mod later that day.

Well when you add the dates you are going to Disney..... What more do I need to drop by and rob you blind.

I wouldn''t post my phone number because to be honest your local prision population doesn't have access to phone books. However, they do troll the internet and then you start getting collect calls from prision (Trust me, I once got a phone number assigned to me that the local prision had apparently posted on the wall...it took me about two days to make BellSouth give me a new number! Turns out that if you discontinue the use of a number they wait practically NO time before giving it to someone else. )

Has anybody pm'd the poor sod to let him or her know this is a bad idea? I haven't seen this post but that's what I usually do when I see someone doing something unwise like this.

This is a good point. Unless you're phone number is unlisted anyone can do a reverse lookup to get your real name and address. Now I know when and for how long you're going to be gone from home... might be worth a little trip of my own to see what kind of home you have.

Yes, but members aren't the only ones who can read these - it's not like it is a password protected site. I can understand how we all get enthusiastic about sharing with friends, but every now and then someone posts "Oh, do you live here, too? We're just around the corner from the post office...". Later on the same person posts their trip plans. The would be thief knows at least that you have a computer and probably thinks you are "rich" because you own DVC. Not a real big jump to check out your house when you are out of town.

I sent a PM to that person when I read his posting. Either he edited his post to remove it or one of the mods did. Either way it's gone.
