Would you pay $600K for a home with no dining area?

It all depends on where you live, and if that is comparable to others at that price. I would buy that 3 bedroom for $600,000 in a heartbeat, as that will get you a one bedroom here. If that's not a great space for that price where you live, I would pass.

It all depends on location, of course. Not here anywhere in Wisconsin, but I can imagine it in big cities like NYC, LA and Chicago depending on exactly where it is.

Where is this home?

Of course if I bought anything for $600K I would not need a kitchen anyway because I would not be able to afford food to cook or store in it.

:rotfl::lmao:

In my city, there are a couple (huge, enormous, gigantic, with built in wine "cellars" or Viking BBQs built in on the decks) 1 million dollar condos (and we giggle madly to see them sit empty month after month b/c they were built starting a few years ago and had JUST finished when everything went to pieces*). But they all advertise ridiculously large kitchens, formal eating areas, etc etc etc. They are massive.

But since the OP has NY in their name, I imagine they are in NY, and I can see that much for a place that focuses on sleeping and not having a fancy spot to eat in, nor a proper place to cook in. Was it being advertised for young singles rooming together? I can imagine that...I just saw a rental apartment advertised as being a "roommate suite" b/c it had bedrooms very separate from each other off the combined living spaces.

I would never buy it, but I can't imagine living in NYC for a moment, so I'm not really the person to decide if it's truly worth it.

That said, my brother and SIL live in San Diego, this is their third home (second one they had built), and they always buy homes with HUGE dining rooms/spaces, but have never furnished such a room yet! They like having OPEN space in their homes...they've been mulling over a pool table for their dining area in this home...but it's been 6 years and they only put living room furniture in the living room probably 2 years ago. They have two more living areas, though...they aren't hurting for "sit and relax" space.

Oh, and they have a biiiiig kitchen, and all they use in it is sink, microwave, and fridge. They order in probably every other night, and the nights in between they are eating leftovers from the other night and/or what SIL brings home from her working lunches. I used their stove, and they told me they thought one burner was broken...not b/c it had impacted them, but because her parents told her it wasn't working well last time they visited and cooked food...

There are some families that live like that!

editing IN to ADD: * though I also feel bad for the owners/builders. Not so much for the 1 mil people (dude, it's Tacoma, seriously, a million for a condo?), but there's this really cool place downtown that has been growing on us, I was getting interested in it...and we just found out that the builder was starting at 500K and REFUSED to knock it down or think about renting, because I guess renters are just scum of the earth. And now he faces foreclosure of this large, brand new development...that only sold 10 units out of something like 200. Ouch.

A lot of lifestyles are changing. Young professionals who can afford it eat out most of the time (that could be changing soon) and retired folks don't need a big dining room as much (my neighbor actually wanted a house without a kitchen) and eat out a lot.

My guess is this "upscale" apartment is geared for a single person or couple who may not have eat-in requirements for their lifestyle, especially in an urban area with good restaurants on every corner. For that lifestyle, $600k is (or used to be) a drop in the bucket. Some people don't need or want yards.

I don't live in NYC proper but just outside. I love living in NY Metro area but would never pay 1/2 million dollars for a small apartment but NYC is an amazing place to live in . The best part is you don't need a car!! How cool is that? People that own cars in NYC only drive on the weekends. I have an 8 year-old car with 25,000 miles on it.

We built a custom house a while back with no dining room. We had a really nice kitchen and a reasonable sized breakfast room, but no formal dining room. For a house in it's price range (about 2x or 3x the median for the city we were in) and it's size (a bit over 3,000 square feet), that was considered odd. We just didn't want to waste the space. On place to eat is enough.

In our current house, the "formal dining room" is what we call the "kid's office". It has six computers lining the walls so that the kids and their friends can play computer games together. It probably gets more use than all of the formal dining rooms in our neighborhood put together.

We also had our house built with a basic garden tub with no jets. The eletrician was so stunned that he insisted on running an electrical line to it anyway.

My wife thinks I am crazy because sometimes I just go stand in our dining room so it feels like the space is justified.

The odd room that I require that most people don't think about anymore is a library. It was on my must-have list when we bought this house.

I went to an open house and saw a great apartment (new construction). It had 3 bedrooms, kitchen and living room but no area to put a dining room set. It did have a terrarce deck big enough to throw parties on (20 people). Neighborhood was great too. But why would someone think $600K is worth a home with a tiny living room/dining room space. Maybe I'm old fashioned.

Are you sure it wasn't a drive true at McDonald's you saw?
The price seems about right.:lmao:
