They just fixed part of the sidewalk in front of our house. Would you let your kids put handprints and/or write names in it? My next-door neighbors have a slab in front of their house where each kid wrote their name and some of the other neighbor kids did too. Is it even legal? I thought it would be cute, but I don't want to do it if it's illegal or perhaps even "tacky". What do you think?

If the city put it in I wouldn't, but if it was a walkway that I put in, I would.

I don't care who put it in....Writing your name in wet concrete is a right of childhood ::yes::

I definitely would. I wish I would have thought of that when we built our house 5 years ago. I would have let my daughter put her hands in our walkway or driveway. Would be a great momento of the kids.

Yes, I would let them do it. I would probably try to keep it small and in a corner somewhere.

Also if you ever pull up the carpets in your house to replace them, let the kids write, draw pictures, whatever they want on the subfloor underneath. Maybe record details of what interests them at the time.

Someday, someone will find it and it will be a nice surprise::yes::

When we built our house 4 years ago, we put a little slab of concrete @ the bottom of our deck steps. DH, DS (then, not quite 3 y/o), DD (then 4-1/2 monthes old) & I all did it. Well, with DD I was afraid that she'd put her hands in her mouth, so I covered her feet with Saran Wrap & did her little feet instead. We put all of our names & date. DD was out there the other day comparing her hand to her brothers. If we ever move, we'll have to figure out away to take that 4 X 3 slab of concrete with us.

Long story short - YES, I would if I were you.

Yes, I would. I wish our daughter had been born when we put our new walkway in, but she wasn't so no handprints in it.

::yes:: My handprints as well as all of our names are in the flooring of my parents storage building. I love looking at it when I'm in there.

I don't think the issue is them just putting their handprints in cement, every parent wants their kids to do that. I think the issue is should she let them put their handprints in cement the city just poured, on the city sidewalk, which the city paid for and they may decide they don't like handprints in the cement they just paid for and make the homeowners whose childrens handprints are in it re-do it, which could be costly.

We're building a house right now and was just out there today looking at all the sub-floors thinking of letting the kids do just that.

When we put a walkway along the side of our house. We let me DD put hers in the concrete.

It IS a sidewalk that the city put in. They just came around today and fixed all the problem areas on our street. The one that my neighbors put their names in is the same public sidewalk. As far as I know, they didn't get in trouble for it and it's been there for several years now. Hmmm, I just don't know what to do.

In Chicago in front of my parents house we did about 15 years ago and the city paid for it. Thanks city of Chicago for the memories:teeth:

If it's city cement, I would not recommend it - look what happened to Tim Robbins.

I wish I would have with my kids 7 years ago when we got a new driveway......but at the time I didn't want to do it......

This use to be my aunts house...since 1957...she has a little place by our porch that has my 2 cousins little prints and intials.....my one cousin passed away back in the late 70's suddenly at age 36....I should actually see if she wants to have it.....it is a place where you can actually remove it without affecting anything....

OK, so I took my son (3yo) outside to play and the workmen were just finishing up. One of the guys came up to me and said that if we wanted we could put my son's name in the concrete since it was in front of our house (but he didn't tell us that-wink wink). The neighborhood kids were all aflutter waiting for these men to leave so they could write their names in. They ended up putting names and handprints in my neighbors concrete. I wasn't going to, but then it occurred to me that they messed up my grass removing the old concrete and I doubt they're going to fix it. So I went ahead and put my two son's names in. I tried getting my older son's hand print but it was too hard. So, now all the kids are buzzing around the neighborhood checking out what everyone else did.
