DD6 has been skiing twice with her Dad, my DEx. She loves it! She now wants to go on a Mother/Daughter ski trip.

I've never skiied. I'm not particulary graceful. I'm 36.

Has anyone learned to ski as an adult?

Any advice?

My advice is don't be afraid to look silly. Have fun. :)

YES. I learned to ski at your age. I had to join a children's class. I also received an award for being the best "sport" which meant I fell down a lot and didn't cry. I was never a good skier, but there is nothing like the feeling of skiing and being in control. (also nothing like the feeling of skiing and being out of control) It's really fun. Go for it but take lessons. Don't just strap on a pair of skis and try.

My four-year-old is asking to go skiing. As much as I want to indulge her I have never strapped skis of any sort onto my feet. I doubt my knees would ever recover!

Me? Ski? :rotfl2:

I can't walk across the room without tripping on the carpet. Skiing would not be a good thing for me.

skiing is pretty easy once you get the hang of it! Don't be afraid to look silly! We love skiing and there are lots of beginners your age on the slopes, and noone thinks they look silly! Noone even pays attention. I agree though, get lessons. There is nothing worse than a beginner trying to show off and going down the big slopes, mauling everyone over in the process! ;)

You could always try it. I'm not particularly fond of skiing. I've been twice. The first time I was 18 and with my boyfriend who decided he could teach me himself. Yeah that lasted about an hour. :rotfl: The second time, I was in college, I took lessons both days and had fun. But it's expensive and scary and cold and wet. I think the only way I'll ever go skiing again is if I have an all-expeses paid trip.

Back in the late 70's early 80's I would ski 20 -30 times per year, but I haven't skied again since then. I now take many business trips to Germany and have the opportunity to ski in the Alps in Austria with a colleage if I desire the last week in February. I would seriously consider it if we didn't have a WDW vacation scheduled for March. I think a broken leg would put a real cramp on the vacation.

My first and only time skiing was in germany in a little town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. (sp) I spent the morning on the beginner bunny hill and the afternoon in a glass enclosed swimming thingy. A lot of it in the whirlpool looking at the snow covered mountains. It was heaven. :teeth:

I learned as a child but I don't remember it being that hard when I was first learning. I would give it a try, I'm sure there will be all ages in the lessons. Have fun!

I agree with the advice to take a lesson and rent skis to try it out.

DH learned to ski at 49, 12 years ago, and loves it. He did take a class, though. The ski schools around here segregate the adult beginners from the kids and there is support in the group. After the lesson everyone would compare notes on different trails and offer encouragement. It was a bonding experience.

I had skied as a teen and took it up again at 45. After a couple lessons I liked it more than when I was younger.

We do restrict ourselves to the green and blue trails (the easier ones). It's still a lot of fun and great exercise and there aren't as many speed demons to watch out for.

Try it! You'll probably have a great time.

Yes, i learned to ski as an adult. It was great! I loved flying over the snow. Then we took our big kids skiing about 10yrs ago, after DS11 was born. We all took lessons and teh kids were flying down the mountain. i went flying down the mountain too, on my back with my skis helicoptering over my head. When I came to a stop I just lay there going, "What was i thinking?" I was 41yrs old and had a very handicapped child to care for. I tore up the ligaments in my knee--my ski trip had lasted exactly 30 minutes. My recovery lasted 8 wks.:joker:

My skiing days are officially over now. But I still love that feeling of speeding over the snow. If you're game, I say do it. What's the worst that could happen?:confused3 Besides an 8wk recovery, I mean.

Sure I'd go learn! I know how since we live in Utah and it's offered as a "class" in elementary school and in middle school when I was younger. Join a class to teach you how to ski and you'll be just fine! The worst is waking up the next morning sore as sore because of the "beating" the mountain gave you but skiing can be a really fun experience for both of you together.

I live 10 min from 8 ski resorts and ya know what though.....I don't ski anymore! LOL I'm too old and my knees and ankles can't take the abuse plus it's too cold for me! :rolleyes1

But you'll never know unless you go. And the best part is you won't ever see those people from the slope again so who cares what you looked like? :rolleyes1 :lmao:

I learned when I was 18 and at college - I just strapped on skis and went. It was fun at the time, except for the really cold weather (it was below zero - we had to cover everything!). The best part was hot chocolate in the lodge afterwards! ;) I went a few more times, and got good enough to ski down some real hills. Then in 1996, when I was 28, DH and I went skiing one afternoon on a glacier in Austria - it was totally different! I was 10 years older and much more aware of what could happen if I fell. I was so cautious and afraid to fall that I didn't really enjoy myself. I'm just not interested in anything like that now that I'm older. If you're anything like me you might not really enjoy that feeling of not really being in control on the skis. Perhaps a lesson would make you feel more confident - I never had any lessons.

If your personality is more daring, or if you don't need to feel in control of your motion, then you might be just fine!

Yes!!! I skiied for the first time when I was about 37 and I love it. (I am 45 now) I only get to ski a couple times a year and I am still a beginner, but it is a lot of fun!!! Not only are you outside, getting some exercise, the mountains are beautiful (in Utah they are!!) and after you are done you can relax in the lodge or on a deck, have a drink...etc, etc. Not only do I like to ski, I like the whole experience!!! My kids learned to ski and they love it too. Give it a try!!!!:wave2: It's really not hard, you just need to take a few lessons! Enjoy!

Oh absolutely! Another chance to spend some quality time with my kids? That's a no brainer. And just think how many times we tell our kids not to be afraid to try something - and then not practicing what we preach... You'd be setting a very good example if you did try it.

I definitely agree with the above posters about taking lessons.

You know I'm 37, significantly overweight (wear a plus size -- not I'm a size 8 who wishes I were a 2), and totally out of shape. I LOVE to ski, as does my 7 year old. It's really the only exercise I enjoy. Last year DS and I went for 5 days in Vermont. My assumption was that I'd have to ski one day, then take a break with him in ski school, because my knees would hurt, but I found that as long as I stayed with him (e.g. didn't try to ski the expert slopes LOL) they were fine -- I skied all 5 days.

The thing that did hurt was the first few times I took him skiing and tried to teach him myself -- leaning over to pick him up each time he fell made me stiff very very fast. My very strong suggestion would be to put you in ski school and your child in all day ski school until he can get back up by himself.

If I can do, so can you.

I love skiing, but it may be the only vacation more expensive than WDW. :guilty:

i went flying down the mountain too, on my back with my skis helicoptering over my head.

This is what my mother says will happen to me...she's an x-ray tech, so you could say that she's a bit "conservative" in her own activities and cautions me to be conservative in my own.

But, I figure, if I went skiing & hurt myself, she'd at least get the chance to hear "You were right Mom" once again.:lmao:

Of course, I could go, take it easy, not get injured & have a blast...so then I'd get to hear her say "You got lucky". :rolleyes1
