would you go to mexico?

We will not be returning. We have made many trips to Mexico and even honeymooned there. The country is riddled with corruption, drugs and violence. There are murders everywhere you go. I prefer to vacation in countries where the people employed to handle those types of matters are not so corrupt they can be swayed to look the other way by the mere sight of a 50 dollar bill. We have friends living down there. The AI are not even safe anymore. They have to hire locals to run these places and some of these employees come from the drug and crime families. They have infiltrated these resorts. I prefer to have my No Way Jose at WDW.

I don't see the point in going to Mexico right now. I went and had a great vacation. Loved it. But a beach is a beach and there are places in the Caribbean where there isn't a full scale drug war, so I would choose somewhere else. It's just a matter of risk really. I went to NYC and didn't go to Harlem at night for the same reasons.

In these type of countries where law and government is "questionable", I would vacation there but only at 5/6 star resorts and I would not leave the property. I felt the same in Jamaica. I don't need news headlines to tell me there could be dangerous situations within these cities.

Looking for an awesome vacation.....go to Beaches Turks and Caicos - BETTER THAN DISNEY (and everyone who knows me was shocked to hear me say that). Waterpark, characters, amazing entertainment and dining, awesome accommodations......it was paradise. It was like a RELAXING DISNEY vacation! If only they had Mickey Mouse!!

Well there are 3 stops in Mexico on the PC cruise in January. Not venturing too far on our own and the one longer excursion is via DCL.

:thumbsup2 We go to Cancun Mexico at least once a year and we have a really good time. We stay on the hotel strip and walk to restaurants and shopping malls and never had any problems. Cancun is a great place for vacation. :thumbsup2

I have zero interest in going to Mexico. If I won a free trip, I would give it to someone else(and not anyone I particularly care about either LOL) We have been looking into cruises, and the ones with stops in Mexico turn us off.

Yep...........we have in the past and will continue. We love the beaches and the resorts and dont venture much farther than that and my family of 5 can go for 10 days for a great price.

My dream is to take them to Beaches in Turks & Caicos, but for my family that is $17,000 on sale so wont be happening anytime soon..........

I've booked with DCL for the MR but not til the end of 2011. I don't believe the ports of call planned are currently problematic. However if the situation changes, I would consider re-booking a different cruise.

No. Nope. Nopity nope.

Corrupt government. Corrupt police. Oh, and don't get sick.

Just our experience (with and without children with us)

I have lost track of the times we have been to Mexico , last time being several months ago and the next time in a few weeks. We treat a mexican vacation very differently then say Orlando. In Orlando we stay about 3-4 weeks, rent a car and travel all around. We do not use a travel agent and stay in a few different places each vacation.

In Mexico, we vacation very differently. We book a package, stay at a 5 star All-inclusive and book guided day trips with reputable companies. We definately do not rent a car in Mexico. I have spent probably approx. 75 days in Mexico and have never been ill in the least. We do not wander far from our resort after dinner (except in the Playacar area just south of Playa del Carmen) for safety reasons. Since we get up at the crack of dawn we are exhausted by early evening so not leaving the resort is not an issue.

While in Mexico I have met many families from all over the world that rent cars while on vacation and travel all around and stay in budget type places but for me, I just think there may be some risk in doing that.

OP: If you are able to stay at a 4 or 5 star AI and only go on guided day trips I would say go for it. If not, forget it.

My husband absolutely refuses to go to Mexico. I wouldn't exactly completely dismiss the idea, but I don't know if it would be my first choice, or my tenth for that matter. I keep seeing so many great places within Mexico to go to, but I hear so many terrible things: ie: crooked cab drivers, hotel staff that won't do anything for you without a good tip (and it has to be good - I'm not against tipping...I worked in the service industry for a long time...but I don't think I should have to tip you before I get service), not to mention the murders, drug wars, corrupt cops and legal system, high incidence of rape, contaminated food, and extreme poverty. Not my idea of a great and relaxing holiday. The unfortunate thing, is you go to these great 4+ star resorts and you don't even see the real Mexico. We like hiking and seeing the back country....We would NEVER be comfortable doing that in Mexico. It saddens me that people spend money to go to Mexico and then feel comfortable not leaving their hotels. What kind of holiday is that?

I have been to Mexico a number of times with my husband and young girls and we always leave the resorts to explore and visit the sites and towns of Mexico without a scratch on us :confused3 Like I often tell clients, you have to be smart no matter where you travel to and use a little common sense to avoid potential harmful situations. Of course if you aren't comfortable then there is a whole world of options to vacation to and enjoy :)

I have also never tipped anyone before hand during any of my visits to Mexico or other countries. I suppose it does happen but it hasn't happened to us during any of our travels anywhere.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I meant at night I don't leave the resort (unless in Playacar). No big deal since we are exhausted by then anyway from touring all day.
