AA wants me to give up my seat and in return I get a $$ voucher.
I'm visiting my son and fly home today (I'm retired) and AA is starting at $200, then $300, $400 and then finally $450.
Would you give up your seat???

Yes I’d give up my seat if schedule-wise I could afford coming home a day later. They will get you on a flight tomorrow?

Yes. I got somewhere between 600-800 on Delta once. ETA: It was cash, not a voucher. More details in post below.

See text I received from AA
That is similar to the one I got from Delta. It came up on my check in kiosk. ETA, I think it was at hotel kiosk, not airlines. I picked the highest amount. This was 7 years ago. The group I traveled with all said no because they thought it was a scam, was worried about work reimbursement or had plans when returning home. I ended up returning on a flight that came home about a two hours later.

We never got a text like that. We just went up to podium.

Ok, I don't know what happened. I never accepted and amount of money. Did touch anything. And now it's saying thank you for giving your set, click OK. Ummm I'm not clicking OK. But I think I've just been bumped from my flight..

Depends upon circumstances. But, if I didn’t have to be home by a certain time, sure. I’d give up my seat, as long as they got me home that day. If I had appointments or a special event, then maybe not.

Heck yes I would. Early last year I accompanied DH on a business trip to NOLA. The flight was oversold and they were offering an $800 to take a flight later that same day. It worked out to $100 an hour and i still would have gotten in around dinner time. I shot out of my seat so fast I almost fell over.

DH did not volunteer which was fine. He was on a business trip after all and while he didn't need to be there that day schmoozing wire colleagues and such is part of the deal. I am more than capable of entertaining myself in a large metro airport for a few hours.

That said, he started talking about the vacation we would take with my voucher and I informed him that if he didn't wait with me I didn't think he should get to benefit from it lol.

Sadly, there must have been no shows because I got on the plane. Oh well. Maybe next time.

To be clear, they are asking what it would take for you to accept a later flight. They are not bumping you and you're not committed. If they need four seats and other folks have selected lower amounts, they'll get bumped first. And they might not even need any seats. They are anticipating an overbooking situation, but it's not a sure thing.

Also, if they bump you, they have to put you on the next available flight, cover any meals, and put you up in a hotel if you have to stay overnight.

I've accepted a voucher when my schedule allows, but I've never been forced. Being "involuntarily denied boarding" comes with cash, not vouchers, and is rarely, if ever, done these days.

Back before my back and hips decided I am 112 yrs old I would have done it in a minute and found an airport bar to wait in and a comfy spot to nap. Now? Can't really drink with my pain meds and no place in an airport is comfy to nap.

We have done it but it was at the airport when we were asked. They got up to $600....my son went up and said that he’d do it for $900 and they gave it to him,

Then, they told him he could have it as a flight credit or a prepaid Visa. He took it as a Visa and got it in the mail two weeks later.
