Would you find this gross (inspired by restaurant sharing thread)?

That was just gross and I would have sent it back too. I probably would have ordered something new entirely.

Totally gross! I had something similar happen several years ago. We were eating at a locally owned restaurant and I was eating a bowl of cole slaw. There was something in it, and I told my mom that I bet they just go in the back and pick it out. Before I called the waitress, I marked the bottom of the bowl so I could recognize it. I don't remember how I marked it, just smeared some ketchup on one side and something else on the other so it would be obvious. I called the waitress and she said she would get me a new bowl. A few minutes later she came back with my "new" bowl of slaw and I looked on the bottom and sure enough it was the same bowl. I asked her if this was a different-clean bowl and she said yes. I just wanted to shout LIAR at her. I called the manager over and complained to him and then we left-no charge for our meal. Never did eat at that place again-they actually went out of business not too long after that.

It's bad when you have to complain about your food, because you never know what they are going to do to it in the back. Gross!!!!

Yes you are right that is gross. The way to fix that is to next time that happens, ask for a new sandwich but ask for the mayo or mustard on the side. That way you know the sandwich was re-made. DH hates when I do this. I don't like tomatoes on my sandwiches so if I ask for the sandwich w/o tomatoes and they bring me one w/tomatoes; I politely let them know thier mistake and then ask for the sandwich to be remade with out the mustard and mayo. That way I know that the sandwich was completely remade with fresh meat and the old sandwich is not given to someone else, so I make sure I'm plucking with the bread when the waiter or waitress is standing right in front of me.

This is a great idea...but I have to tell you this. I waitressed for a long time...and some places they absolutely would make you a completely new sandwich...

Other places..they would take the meat, cheese..ext off the old bread and put it on new bread with the mayo mustard on the side. So really all you are getting is new bread. I am certainly not defending this practice..but it does happen!

:D Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was disgusting! I really started to feel like a heel when I heard them discussing it in the back.

I know they at least made new toast since the first toast was burned a little and the new sandwich had perfect toast. Since it had been cut in diagonal slices, I would think it would have been hard to fit the insides in perfectly if they re-used them but it is possible. The new fries were also piping hot so I'm sure those were fresh.
You should have left. The chef probably spit on your new sandwich.
I did think about that possibility. Really the only reason I didn't just ask them to omit it from the bill and leave (since I really wasn't hungry anymore anyway) is because dmil was treating me to dinner and I didn't want her to feel bad if I didn't eat. I ate 1/4 of the sandwich and a few fries and had the rest wrapped up to take home, where it promptly went into the garbage ;) .

You won't see me heading back to that diner again. It's strange since many of the people around here love the place. It's packed usually for breakfast. This was my second time eating there and the first time I wasn't impressed either. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, I guess.

OMG, this reminds me of an experience I had a Taco Bell quite a few years ago (thankfully, this Taco Bell closed about a month after my problem there). I work downtown, and walked to the mall for lunch to get something from Taco Bell. Don't remember what I ordered, but it had tomatoes on it, and I don't like tomatoes, so I ordered it without. The way the Taco Bell was set up you could see them making all the food. Well, lo and behold when they were making mine, the girl threw a handful of tomatoes on it. She wrapped it up, bagged it, and handed it to me. I told her it was supposed to be without tomatoes, so she proceeded to take the order out of the bag, unwrap it, PICK THE TOMATOES OFF, RE-WRAP IT, AND PUT IT BACK IN THE BAG!!! She then looked mystified that I demanded the food be remade. What are people thinking???

When I was a little girl, we went to a very expensive restaurant and we watched a man at the next table quietly put his cigarette out in his cole slaw bowl. He had not eaten any of it and just buried the cigarette down in the center of the slaw and then covered it up. He left and they cleaned off the table. About 10 minutes later we heard a very loud YELL a couple of tables down. You guessed it, they had re-served the cole slaw and somebody got a mouthful of slaw and cigarette butt! Needless to say, we were out of there!

I agree, disgusting. I wonder how often restaurants do this without our knowledge? Yuck!:crazy2:

I don't remember anyone mentioning this above, but not only is it gross to reserve food, it's also illegal. The Health Dept. requires that any food that leaves the kitchen that is not consumed by the customer has to be thrown out (except lo from a buffet of salad bar - those can be reused). I remember several years ago a steakhouse chain in my area (Mtn. Jack's - are they national?) got in trouble with the health dept. for reusing salad platters and a family style chicken place in Frankenmuth (MI town) got in trouble for reusing food that was served to previous customers family style.
