Would you ever trade in your engagement ring for a different one?

I just replaced my diamond today. I lost my diamond 2 weeks ago when one of the prongs broke and I didn't know. I went with a totally different style ring. It was fun shopping with dh today and picking one out together.

I love the setting, but replaced the diamond on our 5th anniversary. The original center stone was very petite- around 1/6 carat, I believe. I upgraded to a 1/2 carat stone- it looks pretty in the setting.

OP here....

I loved hearing everyone's stories of their rings. I remember when we were starting to talk about getting an engagement ring. I told him that I wanted it to be a surprise (the engagement, not the ring). He specifically asked what kind of ring I wanted. I told him a round solitaire. And while he did get me a round solitaire, it's in a 4 prong setting so it's always looked square to me. LOL And til this day, everytime I look at it, the first thing I notice are the 4 prongs and I don't like it. So I got to looking online at different rings and I fell in love with a wrap (or enhancer ring) that I'd love to get someday along with putting my diamond in a different setting. But the thing is....these rings are in a white gold (my wedding set now is a yellow gold) and I don't want to change my wedding band, ya know? BUT I LOVE the look of the white gold. What would you do? ****and I have never really been a jewelry person, so can someone tell me the difference between white gold and silver? They look the same.

When I was looking at rings yesterday, I was in the same boat, my wedding band was in yellow gold, and I love white gold. They told me they chould dip my yellow gold into white gold so it would match.

White gold is gold with enough alloy metal like nickel, palladium, or manganese to make it look "white". The karat level can be the same as yellow gold (14k, 18k, etc)- karat meaning proportion of gold to other alloys in the metal. 14 parts gold out of 24 total= 14k, and so on.

Sterling silver is, well, mostly silver with a little bit of alloy, usually copper, to strengthen it. "Sterling" designates 92.5% silver and 7.5% other alloy metal.

I could never do that...I love my ring and what it means.

Nope, even though I don't actually were my engagement ring (its on a chain around my neck) I wouldn't "upgrade" DH bought it for me and that's all that matters. Now my wedding ring, NEVER comes off, it is a simple titanium band, nothing fancy but that's what we wanted.

This is a really interesting question.

I'm recently engaged and getting married soon (we're going to honeymoon at WDW!!! YEAH!!!) and I pretty much got the type of engagement ring I wanted (I had input in the ring buying process, thank goodness).

But there are so many gorgeous rings on the market, serioulsy, that it's hard to make a choice. My ring is a pave set ring, but it's not the only type I like.

I wouldn't trade my ring in for a different one, but if heaven forbid it got lost i might get a different type of engagement ring, like a Danhov. I love Danhov rings so much. They're so beautiful. They seem to float in the air.

If I had the money, i might buy one just to wear on my right hand!

Fortunately, I am happy with my ring and it means a lot to me.

Thanks for explaining. I have another question. Does the white gold have to be 'redipped' every year? I have a co worker who has a white gold wedding set that the 'white gold' is starting to 'wear off'. She said she was told it had to be 'redipped' every year. :confused3 I have never heard of this.

My mother's original wedding set is white gold. I have it now (my parents are divorced) and it has never been touched. It looks just as nice as it did when I was growing up.
