Would you EVER do this?

Showing respect does not mean not having to wait your turn

You know I wasn't going to respond and waste my time but here goes; Sometimes in life we have to turn our backs in let certain things slide by, this is one of them. And yes respect your elders even if it kills you. So you have to wait a little longer in line get over it!!!

This falls under Survival of the Fittest. While it would never occur to me to get a store manager to do that (really, I would think a pharmcist would be required to do that, guess not), kudos to this person. Hey, it worked, didn't it?

Now see, I thought you were going to say the person tried to jump to the front of the line. Larry David try to do that once on Curb Your Enthusiasm--didn't work.

Why should I get over it?
just because you are a certain age does not give you the right to forget your manners or others. Sorry, I do respect my elders, but being respectful does mean blindly allowing them to get away with rudeness. I did say perhaps the person had a real need but I sincerely do not believe this based on the description of the event. I think it was a senior snowflake who thought they were very "special".

I can think of several elderly people I know who might do that:
  • People with incontinence issues
  • People who physically can't stand for long periods of time because of knee or hip surgeries
  • People who have taxis or rides waiting for them
  • People with blood pressure issues where standing in a long line might make them pass out

I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt rather than automatically assume an adult snowflake behaved badly. The fact that the person discretely went to an Assistant Manager, explained their situation to him/her and the Assistant Manager discretely complied tells me that this might have been one of the above situations.

I'm sure you are right. The man probably explained his situation to the manager and the manager took care of him immediately. Great customer service!

Yes, the OP gave sooo much detail so we could know exactly what the problem was. Good for the older gentleman for getting his needs met. I'm just glad he found a compassionate manager that understood his needs.

I wait my turn.

When I was in high school a older women tried to bypass my line. I noted who was the last person in my line. I finished with the customer who I was helping and then took the one behind her. After finishing with this customer I took the next one. At this point she said I am next in line. I said, "No you are behind the lady in the blue shirts. I will take you after I wait on her." She was so shocked she just stood there and waited her turn. Never heard another peep out of her. BTW this is what our managers told us to do in these situations.

Great! I wish that the with the orignial Poster, the manager said that he would help move the line along and make the person wait their turn. I think it is crazy when they finally open another register and the person says...I'll take whoever is next. Of course, the LAST person in line runs over!

No, as a general rule I don't think I would.

But having said that, there could possibly be a reason why this guy was in a hurry. As someone else mentioned, the wait time at a pharmacy line can be crazy.

I try not to judge.
Who knows what might have been going on?

I have plenty of the above situations and these are no excuse for jumping a line. For situation 2 and 4 you go when you know the pharmacy will be dead and you go to one with an area to sit in. For situation 1 you go to the pharmacy when you know it will be dead, and you go to one that has a restroom. For situation 3 you wait in line, just like everyone else, you and your drivers time are no more important than the others in line.

Being sick or using a taxi is not an excuse to be rude, and you should never assume anything you are dealing with trumps anyone else.

Oh how we judge.... who's flake ??? :lmao:

....:scratchin...... mebbe old people do this stuff because they have a sense of 'urgency'.....:rolleyes1

Wow. Some of the responses are completely off base. This particular customer is a major pain.

At drop off (where you give your script to be filled) she used to demand that a pharmacist- not the technician - take her prescription.

And in the event I described, there was a elderly couple (both who use canes) waiting patiently inline, so this was not an old versus young issue.

This woman just believes she is more important than anyone else - yes she is an elderly snowflake.

From some of the responses, I guess there are people that find this behavior acceptable.

:rolleyes1I wouldn't have had him wait on me personally, but I would have had him get himself or another checker to work the line!!!

The situations everyone metions could all apply.

Also wonder if it is an elderly person if they just aren't up on, or comfortable with some of the realities of today's pharmacies.
I'm 53 and I remember as a kid when if you went into the pharmacy, the only one allowed in the pharmacy was the pharmacist. They took your prescription, filled it, gave it to you, and took your money. There was no wait. They did it on the spot. Don't know if it was required by law, or if the business practice has just changed. And I don't recall lines as a kid, they always had enough pharmacists on staff to help all the customers.

Of course, in those days, all the pharmacies here used to offer free delivery too!

Aso in those days, WE paid for prescriptions, insurance didn't cover it. There were no negotiated prices with insurance companies, and no mail order prescription warehouses.

But what if they are all elderly? Do we check them out by age. The oldest first? The one in the biggest hurry? How to tell?

That's why we have lines.

One's with extenuating circumstances might just get first call. I don't begrudge them, I don't want to walk in their shoes.

I agree. We don't know what the medical situation is. Obviously they are at the pharmacy for a reason. I would give them the benefit of the doubt.

I skimmed over the part where this is a pattern of behavior. It might then be a good idea for the manager to say, "I can open another register but I will need to take the next person in line."

...medical situation or not, it doesn't excuse rudeness.....I, for one, have very bad osteoarthritis in both my knees. When I am standing or sitting for an extended period of time, my left knee totally 'locks up' and I have to get it going before I can walk in a halfway-decent manner. I've been limping for over 5 years now, but I would NEVER dream of being impertinent or curt, especially when there are others in front of me. Even with my 'ailment', I have many times offered those who seem worse off than me get in front of me on line, and I hope that others do the same. However, it doesn't always work like that, and that certainly doesn't automatically give people the right to barge in when others are patiently waiting their turn....JMOP :confused3 [...let the flaming begin, although not TOO low, on account of my bum knees...:teeth: ]
