Would you drive 3 hrs for a REALLY good airfare?

I would wait and see what happens with the airline ticket prices in the next few months. I also would not want to drive from Detroit to Cleveland during February. It's almost a guarantee there'll be a snowstorm and some type of major traffic jam! I looked into tickets recently and found some reasonable prices out of Lansing to Orlando. But I'd still wait, because most likely there'll be cheaper airfare out of Detroit to Orlando by February. Good Luck!

Dear husband watches the airline show on A&E and is afraid of southwest.
HaHa Too many mix ups and crazy people flying. I wanted enough of a layover that we will be ok if we get stuck somewhere. I also wanted to leave in morn and come back at night to enjoy as much as I can of mickeys' house. We leave at 6:20 am HaHa We have 3 teen girls HAHA

We drive about 2-1/2 hours to New Orleans so we can fly nonstop on Southwest to Orlando. Our local airport is about a 20 minute drive from home but there are no non-stop flights (connect through Atlanta, Memphis or Houston). We bought tickets on SW for our October trip for $246 ($82 per person) add to that $50 for gas and $50 for parking in New Orleans. Total $346. Tickets out of Lafayette are $1116 ($372 per person). Southwest out of New Orleans allows us to fly 3 for less than the price of 1!!!

Just curious if the flights out of Manchester are just as inexpensive? it seems that Manchester is quicker than Boston..

We are.. We live about 20 minutes from Augusta airport but are driving up to Boston to save over $200 per ticket for our family of four. The times are ideal, the price is great and even with the gas, parking, etc we still save tons of $$.

Would it be cheaper to fly out of Manchester?? It seems closer that Boston for you..

Call me crazy, but we're driving about 12 hours for better airfare. Airfare here in the prairies is just rediculous! And the flight schedules are even worse! (Last year we had to overnight in Calgary, and there are only certain dates that I can get the Regina-Calgary connection before the flight from Calgary-Orlando. (I think I have to fly out on a Wednesday, and fly back on a Sunday or something crazy like that). So instead of paying $1600 canadian for the two of us to fly on an inconveinent schedule, we payed $440 Canadian for the two of us to fly out of Minneapolis. We're going to make a mini trip out of it, and visit the mall, etc. We booked a hotel that offers park and fly, so we figured even with that and gas, we're still saving at least $700. Now we're just crossing our fingers that NWA gets things straightened out before our flight. (I had a feeling I should have booked Suncountry, if there had been strike talk at the time when we bought our tickets, I would have).

Yes it is and I like flying out of Manchester but we had to use the Jet Blue credit we had or we wore going to loose it.

We live in Saskatoon, I am from NC and the airfare and taxes up here are crazy. We usually use our airmiles to fly to Minneapolis and then hop a cheaper flight out of there if possible.

Like today, after my WDW trip in Oct. I am going to my sister's home in NC for 3 weeks and then going back to Orlando for my return flight back to Saskatoon. It will cost me 76.00 roundtrip from Orlando to Raleigh, NC and that is roundtrip. Heck I couldn't even fly to Regina from Saskatoon one way for that much....

I guess only someone from Canada would realize how bad the airfare really is around here. To me driving 12 hours is worth saving $700-$800 dollars. Plus I get an extra mini vacation in Minneapolis.

It will cost me 76.00 roundtrip from Orlando to Raleigh, NC and that is roundtrip. Heck I couldn't even fly to Regina from Saskatoon one way for that much....

I looked up the fare from Regina to Saskatoon up online with Air Canada just for the fun of it. The cheapest fare was $484.01 round trip Then to top it off, You have to connect in Calgary The trip takes 3hrs. It's not even worth it, considering it's only a 3 hour drive

When we lived in Ohio, we drove to Indy for the cheaper flights. About 2- 2 1/2 hours. For a family of four it saved around $300.00. Like others have mentioned if it was just 2 of us, we would have flown from Dayton, or Columbus.

We just moved to the Baltimore area, so now we get direct, fairly cheap flights, from BWI, w/ lots of choices of times. I watch Airline too, but will still fly Southwest, for the cheap fares. Any better options that anyone knows about?

We ALWAYS fly SW out of Manchester in spite of a drive of a little over 3 hours. It always saves us over $300 compared to flying out of Bangor - well worth it IMO!! This time we're trying Song out of BOS...I got tickets for $135/ea but now I'm kicking myself because if I had held out just a couple more weeks I could have gotten them through SW for $115/ea.

Yes-I'll drive 3 hour to save money, but it has to be worth it. For example we went to see family in CA this summer. Tickets were $1000 for five from Charlotte, NC to SF. If we had flown local airport( 30 min away) ticket would have about $2000 -NExt airport 1 1/2 hours away-$1500. We pay parking one way or the other-mute point. We did spent the night at hotel add $100. Got a college visit in on the way-priceless.

Hey, if you're considering driving - TOLEDO. I flew on TransMeridian, which wasn't that bad, to Sanford (about a 45 minute drive to Disney) in July. Fare was about $200 pp. They consistently have lower fares, you just have to buy them right away - I waited too long. They do leave Toledo at about 7:55 am and return around 10:30 p.m., not great times, but far better than driving to Hopkins, since we don't get all that lake effect.

Lori - Thanks for the suggestion! I just checked out fares using this option, and right now it looks like our best bet. $215 rt to Sanford - that beats anything I have found so far. We have driven to Toledo many times for other reasons and know the drive is not bad at all. Is there any info you can give me about the airport? What is the parking situation like? Is it easy to find your way around the airport?

Parking is $6/day, outdoor, and right across a service road from the airport entrance. Couldn't be simpler. It's a small airport, easy to navigate.

We came close to buying those TMA flights (and when they first came out, they were $175, not $215), but the late return is too late for my youngsters.
