This is a question for nurses about a 16 year old who had an abortion and the nurse attending told her aunt, btw the girl was legally of age to have treatment without parental consent and 16 is the age of consent for sex as well so there was no under age problem. Would you tell and risk your career or not? Was she right to do that? personally she was wrong and hopelly will get struck off for doing this.

It looks like the nurse will be struck of for breaching patient confidentiality.

As she should be.
No -I wouldn't have told

No way I would have told. Confidentiality laws are a big deal. This nurse will probably be sued.

As a parent, I would hope if my dd is ever in that situation she tells me herself and I would want to know.

As a patient (in general, I don't mean an abortion patient), I'm really upset at the nurse. Doesn't matter what the procedure, there are confidentiality laws.

According to the article, there were complications to the abortion. If my daughter were 16 years old and have some sort of medical complications, I sure as heck would want to know why.

I'm not a nurse but I wouldn't have breached the confidential agreement.

And now because the mother knows she had an abortion she has turned her out of her home and is refusing to have anything to do with her. All due to a nosey nurse. Mind you that hospital is having the trouble else where seemingly an amin staff member saw the paperwork about an abortion on a 19 year old (1 year over legal adult) and told her grandmother.

A SECOND girl has told how she was betrayed by an NHS worker over a secret abortion.
The 19-year-old's family temporarily disowned her after her gran - a devout Catholic - was told.

The mum of two had decided she couldn't cope with a third child and spared her parents the agonising truth by saying she was going into hospital for tests after a stomach complaint.

The day after the abortion she visited her gran - who snapped "Liar!" at her and told her never to come back.

The gran said an admin worker pal at the hospital had told her the truth.

Her nan forced her to tell her parents - who "went ballistic".

The nurse should be fired and a lawsuit should be brought against her.

It is the nurse's responsibilty to maintain the confidentiality of every patient, regardless of her personal beliefs, relationships or anything else.

If the story is true as written, the nurse blew it.

Regardless, if it were MY daughter...I would want to know...period. I'm not saying the nurse was right.

No I would not have told ANYONE. If there were "complications" it would be up to the doctor... Unreal.... I can't believe in this day and age a PROFESSIONAL would do such a thing.... she's no better than the neighborhood busybody.... I'm disgusted.

I agree in that of course, as a parent, I would want to know. And I hope I am raising my kids in a fashion that they know they can come to me with issues big or small. I would feel a failure as a parent if my kids were too afraid to come to me and felt they had to hide something as important and life altering as this. JMHO

The nurse should be fired if the story is true as stated.

I agree that I would want to know about my own daughter (even though I would be disappointed, I would never throw my child out - but sadly not everyone would be so supportive), but as a nurse I would NEVER have told. You just CAN'T do things like that...and believe me, I have been tempted. I had a grandfather BEG me, with tears in his eyes, to tell him his DGD's diagnosis. I had to tell him he would have to discuss it with her parents. Even before HIPAA, we couldn't go around willy-nilly telling people's personal medical information.

If it were my daughter, I would want to know, too. But then, I wouldn't throw her out of the house for having an abortion, either. And I think that she would realize that and hopefully feel comfortable enough to tell me herself.

Clearly the 16yo knew that it was best not to tell her parents. How disgusting that the nurse thought she knew better. :sad2:

I am faced with situations that I find morally reprehensible every time I clock in to work. Everything from rape cases, drug abuse, STD's, past abortions, child abuse etc. If something needs to be shared, I share it only with those who legally need to know. (doctor, CPS, social services, police)

HIPPA laws are in place for good reason. As tempting as it may have been to tell a family member, it part of a nurse's job requirement NOT to share medical information. If someone has a problem with that, then they need to find another career field.

I also want to add that as a pro-life Catholic--I am horrified that the mother threw her daughter out...The daughter needs to be embraced. Her choice to have an abortion had to have been an excruciating one.... and I'm sure that daughter will struggle with this for a long time. The Catholic church teaches about forgiveness---this mother should learn from that....

Yes, the nurse should be disciplined if this is true but I thought this bit was interesting: "We encourage the patient to raise this matter directly with the hospital so that we can look further into the allegations".

Bit strange to go directly to the press and not to the hospital authorities.
