Would you do the Luau with a 1 year old?

My DD turned 1 in November. We're staying at the Poly and were considering the Luau but we don't know if she'd sit through the whole thing. My 5yo DS would, but we're not so sure about DD and would hate to have to leave in the middle considering the cost. What would you do?

I would skip it until another trip. I too have a 1yr old (Nov. b-day too). There is no way she would handle that dinner + Show.

If you want, I would recommend eating at Ohana (my DD(1) did an okay job with that). Ask to be seated in the main area, so they kids can watch all of the fun.

Can I jump on your thread and ask a silly question?
My DH and my DM will be on the next trip. Both have bad knees. Do you sit on the ground or are there tables and chairs?
I just always picture Luaus with people sitting on the ground. Not quite sure why? :confused3 Thanks

You sit at tables with chairs and the meal is served family style.

Actually when we went my DD was 13 months and the other DD was 4 years. DD13 mths had a better time than DD4 . She was a rockin' and a rollin' the whole time and she ate sooooo good. She really loved the pineapple coconut bread. DD4 was in a mood and wouldn't sit down and would not participate in the show (we sat in the front) . I guess it just depends on your child. I know my DD loves music so I knew she would be OK at this.

My youngest was 13 months old when we went to the Luau. We were seated right in front at the very first seats! She loved it! It was very entertaining for her. We also did it on a non park day and made sure she had a nap that day. We also did the first show of the evening. My kids do really well when we go out to eat. After dinner, DH put her on his lap and kind of danced with her..she just loved it. She wan't walking yet so she didn't have the urge to get down and want to run around. If you aren't sure..maybe you should skip it or request a table near the back in case.

I agree if you decide to go, be sure to be well rested and hungry. It is an entertaining show, but a bit long for a little one. Mine were 6,8 and 3 when I took them and they enjoyed the flame throwing towards the end of the show.

I think it would depend on your baby. We just came back from a trip and I was considering booking the Luau or HDDR, but then I came to my senses as DD was running around the house that he would not sit that long for a dinner and show. He barely sits for a few bites of dinner. He's 15 months but as soon as he was walking at 10 months he has been on the go. However DD who is now 5 would have been content to sit with us with a little playing on our laps. We did take her to HDDR at age 2 and she had a great time. I don't think we'll be able to take DS until he's 4 or 5.

We did Mickey's Luau in 1997 on our first trip. They don't do that one anymore. Our son (he was 4) fell asleep before the food was served. It wasn't very good and I would not do it again. The show was fun, but the food was terrible.

Your 1 year old may be fine with it as he'll slep through it. I took my kids a few years ago. The were bored to tears after the second dance. This used to be a fun dinner but now that they've gone traditional its a bore for kids (and even adults) IMHO. Even the food was just okay and it was expensive. I won't be back.

When my daughter was 13 mos, we took her to the HDDR. She was fine at first. She was fine during most of the dinner. But, after a long day in the parks and having such good manners for over an hour, she was d-o-n-e. I walked her outside for a few minutes. We stood in the back for a while. We were going to do the Luau this time (she'll be 2 1/2), but we decided we'll wait until next trip.

Don't forget to account for the rest of your day when deciding on a long dinner show. If they're well rested before hand, then you should be fine, and they'll have fun. Mine just got zapped by too much day.

I think I would skip the Luau at that age. We just got back with our DDs ages 4 and 1.5 in Nov and they wanted to always be on the move. Especially the 1.5 yr old...at dinner time, which was right after naptime usually, she wasnt really fond of sitting too long...I can't imagine her making thru a dinner show. We're going again this year, and still will be skipping it and HDDR until next time.

We took or dd 2 and dd 6mo on our last trip to the luau. It was rough for us, not becaus of the show, but because of the heat. Keep in mind that the luau is out side. It is covered and there are fans, but it can still get hot. The show was fun and our 2 year old loved it.

So overall, I would say that it depends on the weather. Would I do it again. No, I would use our dining credits to do another character meal, I think...

Just my 2 cents

My 5 year old thought it was boring and I agree. I wouldn't do the luau again no matter what the age.
