Would you complain?

It's happened to me more than a few times. Even with a picture!! I feel for you. It will grow back. I wouldn't complain and I worked in a Salon for years too. Your interpretation and hers were different. Very quickly you will be able to be happy again. Sorry you hated your haircut. Thats the reason I rarely get one.

Will mouse or gel help with styling? Can you part it a different way and make it look kind of like a pixie cut? I feel for you. I too know what it's like.

I had this problem a short while ago. I went in for a cut before a family wedding...stylist was gabbing at me and didn't pay attention to the THREE inches she whacked off by mistake. I pointed it out to her, she panics and starts spinning me around in the chair cursing under her breath. The only way to fix it was to whack three inches off the other side.

While I didn';t HATE the style, it wasn't what i wanted. She charged me full freight for the cut and color. I even tipped hr.

But I'm done with her. It's an old lady salon anyway. I want an upscale firglie girl salon. The only trendy, chick thing I do for myself is my haircut every 6 weeks and dangit I'm gonna be HIP.

There was no point in me calling to complain after the bad cut. The styilist WAS the owner. I probably wouldn't call in you r shoes either, but I am a wimp.

Mouse House Mama,

I am extremely sorry. I really mean this, because I know what you're going through (although your situation is definitely more drastic than mine). It seems a lot of other DISers do too. Early 2008, I wanted my hair cut to my shoulders. I thought I was being clear enough ... I asked for the stylist to cut the hair to my shoulders, I wasn't telling her how to build a spaceship! The next thing I know, just like you, I saw my hair was taking a turn for the worse. It ended up upper ear length. I was speechless but I didn't want to hurt the stylist's feelings.

I had hair down to my mid back and for so long after that haircut I missed my ponytail and the long hair (even longer when straightened). It's something very important to me to have long hair, so don't feel bad for feeling bad about your situation. Everybody has things important to them on different levels, and the DIS is definitely a place to share, whether it's a small, medium or big problem!

So sorry OP, but as you know it will grow :goodvibes

CHI products makes an incredible straightener. I have wavy hair - I put on the CHI straightener, blow dry my hair then curling iron it. I get great manageable waves using this method.

Give it a try. :goodvibes

I looked like Toad from Super Mario brothers!!! I had asked for an A line bob that hit just below my chin. She gave me a big poofy A line bob...that hit just above my cheek bone!!
I'm sorry, but this had me :rotfl: I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, though.

OP, I'm sorry it happened to you!

definitely complain.
now i wanna see some pics please!!!!

No way in hell!
I don't even want to leave the house. I am probably not going to complain because it would be pointless. It's not like they can fix it and I sure as heck am not letting them near me again.
Did I mention that I am pregnant? So now I look like big lady with the little head wearing a hat made of hair. Cute. :guilty:
My head actually hurts from this haircut. It's like my hair is screaming "WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!!!!!!":sad2:

OP-I am so sorry to hear about this. I too was a stylist for about 10 years before doing what I do now, so I know what you mean. Every stylist goes through the same training no matter what salon they end up working at, which is sad. You can go get a $10 fabulous haircut and at the same time go and pay $100 and get a crappy one. It doesn't matter. It all matters on whether the stylist takes pride in what she does. When I was a stylist I listened to my clients cuz they were the one who paid my paycheck. I tried to give them exactly what they wanted cuz if they weren't happy I wasn't getting paid.

You can maybe try a hair pomade/wax that will kinda weight down the hair to make it more manageable. Just don't use too much as it will make your hair greasy. Maybe try flipping the ends up and everything else down (like how Reese Witherspoon's hair in Sweet Home Alabama). Try using a flat iron to make it look longer.

Yes-I would complain. Just simply talk to management and let them know and simply decline that they fix it. Wait til it grows out a bit and go back to your original stylist. Stylists will automatically assume they are pleasing their customers if people don't receive complaints or compliments.

Before I even post this I want to say that yes, I know there are bigger problems in the world. I know that this is really nothing in the overall scheme of things. I know it will grow. I know I know I know.

That being said I have just gotten the worst haircut of my life. I am far from a dramatic person and have never gotten upset over any hair issues. I have even had someone melt- yes melt- my hair when they overprocessed it and I still rolled with it. This however has sent me over the edge. I go to get a haircut last night. I tried a new place that someone reccomended. Now please know I am a hair salon snob. I don't got to supercuts, lemon tree etc. I have a Beautician's license and used to work in an upscale shop. This is simply the type of places I like for many reasons.
Anyway, I went in and met the stylist. I knew I was going to cut about 3 inches or so off of my hair. It needed it. We discussed a style. I was very specific about what I did not want. We agreed and off we went. She started cutting and in my head I thought that it was going to be great and it was going to look so healthy. Then she kept cutting and cutting and cutting. Still- I figured that it would look cute when it was dry. Um.... NO! She blew it out so huge that I looked like the wash and set ladies. Still- I figured I would go home and do it myself and it would look cute and I know to do hair so no big deal.
Yeah, no. I have the same haircut as Sophia from the Golden Girls. No I am not exaggerating. I walked in the door last night and one of my kids wanted to know how I got Grandma's hair!:guilty:
I cried all night last night and all morning today. I know it is a stupid thing to cry about but I feel so ugly. The kids are so sweet and have been trying to cheer me up and keep telling me that they don't care what I look like because the most important thing is that I am their Mom. They are so sweet and I do agree with them but I honestly look horrible. I have poofy curly hair to begin with and I have 4 clips in it right now to hold it down. Otherwise I look like I have a hair helmut on. I am trying to suck it up but I really feel awful.
So, my question is- would you call the shop owner and complain? I know there is nothing she can really do because it's not like she can fix it. The lady was really nice who did my hair but I look ridiculous. Would you say anything?
I am never going back there again.
TIA.
Before I read any of the other posts, here's my opinion: the time to say something about it was when the lady was cutting and cutting and cutting. You're a licensed beautician. You know how to do hair. You should have recognized that something wasn't right when that lady was doing your hair.

Having said that, I watch the Golden Girls on TV every night. Sophie's hair is long enough that it can by styled many different ways; it's not like she's got a butch haircut (which I've had BTW. Not on purpose - and no, I didn't go back, either).

My father had a saying for occasions like that:

The only difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is two weeks.

Having said that, the decision to complain about it to the salon is yours. Personally, with your background, I don't see the manager or owner cutting you any slack. However, it might make you feel better to complain so go for it if you want to.

Then wait two weeks and see if you don't feel better about your haircut.

If you have enough hair left that you think they could do something to fix it, I would complain and ask for it to be re-done at no cost to you.

If there's nothing to be done except to let it grow out then I wouldn't complain and just wouldn't go back.

I feel for you. I've had a few bad haircuts in my life and it's the worst!! Try to remember also that we're our own worst critics. It really probably doesn't look as bad to everyone else as it does to you. I've also found that after a week or so of playing around with my hair, I can get a bad cut to look decent. Being pregnant just amplifies everything too because we're already feeling like we're not looking our greatest KWIM?

I probably wouldn't complain. I just wouldn't go back to her.

FWIW, your DH called you a "young girl." Not sure how old you are, but if my DH called me that (I'm 47), I would be very happy. :flower1:

While I somewhat agree with what I bolded if she stopped in the middle when I realized she was going cutting crazy I would have had a haircut like an inmate. I stupidly figured that she had a plan. Once you start cutting you can't just stop and it will fix itself.

My hair is shorter that Sophia's. It just looks like hers when my hair is blown out.

I also wanted to add that not every stylist gets the same training. Yes, we all must complete our state boards and required hours but after that if you want to work in an upscale salon you must complete their training program as an assistant where you really learn to do hair. Most of the better salons (here anyway) make you assist for at least 2 years while they teach you and send you for classes before you can take clients on your own.

What's done is done. I look like a chubby boy. No point in complaining to them. :sad2:

Yeah, he's really sweet. I am in my mid 30's. I know he feels bad. He keeps telling me that it looks cute. The man deserves a statue for lying to me like that.:lovestruc

I answered before reading all the other posts because I didn't want other people's opinions to sway my initial one. I read later where you clarified that your hair was only about two inches long, which is as long as mine is when I get it cut so the Sophia Petrillo comment puzzles me. Sophia's hair is MUCH longer than mine and two inch long hair pretty much looks the same whether it's been blow dried or not. It's poofy or it's flat, but it still looks two inches long. :confused3

I see that you're pregnant and that can cause all sorts of hormonal issues. Crying is to be expected, and focusing on all the bad things about your cut is normal. I agree with the other poster who said it's probably not as bad as you think it is.

In any case, wait about a week and see if things don't look better. :grouphug: And just don't go back to that salon.

Have you tried researching cuter short styles? I know there are so so many cute short styles that I myself have been afraid to try. Maybe they can style it different or help make some changes. :goodvibes I feel bad for u tho, most of us women really feel horrible when our hair isn't working. Sometimes tho I notice with me I think it's worse than it is. Even on my best days I stress about it, I don't know what it is about bad cuts. That being said, I was recently at a salon getting my hair cut and highlights, so I was there awhile, and I noticed a stylist with a "punk rock" type style doing the same type punk choppy look on older woman who honestly did not like it. About 3 women in their 60s+ were there while I was getting mine done and they all came out looking like punk rockers. They were not happy. It was kind of sad and amusing at the same time, oh boy.

Seriously? I am not crying because of hormonal issues. But thanks!:sad2:

As for my hair looking the same dry or wet sorry but it doesn't look the same at all. It is the cut . I have naturally poofy hair with cowlicks all around my hairline. With a good haircut it takes some work. With a bad haircut it is near impossible. I told all of this to the stylist and she promptly ignored it.

My point about looking like Sophia what that I have an old lady haircut. Trust me- I know the difference. You can have short hair and it looks great. You can also have short hair and look like you belong in a retirement home. I am not ready for the home yet so I would like an age appropriate look.

I am far from a dram queen and this has nothing to do with being pregnant. My BFF who has known me for 19 years heard me cry for the first time today. I am pretty easy going. It's just hard to keep rolling when you look like a jerk. I also should not have to wear clips in my hair to keep it looking somewhat normal when I just spent $50 to have it cut.

Thank you to all of those with the kind words. I know it will grow. I just wish it was like the cut and grow dolls. Cut it off and pull it and it grows long again. lol!

I went back to the salon once and had them redo my hair. I asked the stylist for long layers because I have very thick hair and without the layers it tends to look like a bell. :scared1: She decided I didn't need layers.

My hair didn't look bad when I left, but when they do it it always looks 10x better than when I do it myself anyway. I tried it myself the next day and was so upset that I called and told the manager I was not happy. He told me to come back and they would fix it. They were very nice about it and understood where I was coming from. I didn't go in like a lunatic, but rather explained calmly what I didn't like. No charge for the fix and I liked the cut after it was done.

When I started working in the salon they said, "Forget everything you learned in BS except for how to 'drape a patron' ". I've never forgotten them saying that to me (26yrs ago)

I've been in this business for 26 years. I'm 44 and still go to the same girl who cut my hair when I was in 7th grade. Your post is why I do not switch. Either her or her sister have always cut my hair. I hope I die before they do.

I know you know hair and I know you know your own hair but I still think it could be fixed and cut into a cute style. I wouldn't give in to old lady hair. Eww.

Get yourself some molding mud, and just have fun with it until it grows out. :thumbsup2
