Would you book a trip you might have to cancel?

So, here's my deal: we have our house for sale. We ALL know what the market is like right now. Not expected to change much in '08, so it's a total crap shoot as to when this place sells.

I want to book a trip for September '08. Hoping for Free Dining again, but either way we still love going then. I'm very close to having my deposit money and I just want to go ahead and make the reservations!

IF we are still in this house then no problem, we take the trip as planned and everything works out great.

If we sell the house before then, it will involve a job change for my DH and thus he will not likely have the vacation time next fall (within his 1st year). This would mean either a) cancel the trip and see what the following year brings (will I lose my deposit and/or any payments made so far??), or b) see if I can just change my dates and hopefully all money involved will also transfer.

What would you do??! I could just save the money in the bank account but somehow actually having the trip booked does a wonder for my mental health!! Making a payment to the travel company and knowing I'm that much closer to paying it off is somehow more magical!:wizard:

There are a couple of ways I would approach this. I would see how quickly you are getting showings and how many on the house. If your husband gets a different job he could mention it in his interview that you have a family trip planned and you would be willing to take the time off without pay if possible or be prepared to cancel or postone your trip. My husband mentioned a pre planned trip in an interview last year and they still offered the job and told him he couldn't miss that opportunity. I would think most decent employers would understand esspeically if you are upfront and honest about it. Any money you pay is refundable until a certain date. I think 45 days out from travel but someone else may have a more for sure answer on that. If you postpone your trip I am certain that any money paid can be applied to a new date.

I've moved this post over to the Resorts board as it's more of a booking question than a theme parks question.

Thanks,

Knox

Ok, thanks! I wasn't really sure where to post it!!

*bumping!!*

I agree with this except the only money that is not refundable would be the insurance if you were to opt for it. If no insurance is taken than yes, all of your money will be refunded.

Isn't the deposit refundable up until 45 days out? (Ask CRO first, of course).

Assuming you'd get your deposit back up until 45 days out, I'd book the trip!

What you said above is very true for me too. Having a trip booked makes things ALOT different (and nicer)....something to look forward to...even if I have to cancel it later.

Good luck!

We almost have to, with the way things are at Disney these days. I'm planning on booking for Aug '08 as soon as we come home in Jan if there isn't a bounceback offer going while we're there, even though that trip is still a "maybe". I make the plans, make the ADRs, and then cancel if something falls through, because I know that if I wait until 2-3 months before our travel dates when we know for sure, we're not likely to have many options.

Me, I would book it. It's better to have booked and lost then to never have booked at all :o) Actually I would book, you can always get your deposit back. At 45 days you will have a much clearer picture.

Thanks you guys! This is why I love the DIS!

Looks like I'll be booking before the year's out! Besides, I have a brand-spankin'-new PassPorter sitting on my dining room table....Can't let such a thing of beauty go to waste!;)

I too would book it.
I hear ya on the housing market. My parents are trying to sell their house now, and it's been quite some time on the market. Hopefully yours will go quickly!
I agree with PP. If you do sell the house, and DH has to get a new job, mention the vacation. I did when I interviewed for my last job, and that was fine with my boss...she just wanted to know. Also, when we hired others, we never didn't hire somebody based on a planned vacation, and actually made it one of our interview questions. But maybe that's because we were in the travel industry LOL

I would book the trip. Who knows, the resort you are booked at might not be available if you cancel and then re-book. And, if something like the job change affects the reservations, you can always cancel. :)

I would go ahead & book it to make sure you get the resort you want. And I'd book your ADRs 180 days out and if you decide the timing is not good just cancel. From my experience, before 45 days out you can cancel & get your deposit back minus travel insurance if you opt for it. After 45 days theres different deadlines - I'd check that out. Now if its a room only I think the cancellation policy is different. I know you want to pay towards the vacation but personally I would pay my savings account just in case you do cancel you won't have to wait for a large sum of money. You may need it if you're moving, etc. Also about the new job - I used to work in Human Resources and we would always let people borrow from their vacation or have the time off unpaid. We would leave it up to the employee. I think most good companies would do that especially for a family vacation already planned & paid for.

Its amazing what having a disney trip booked does for the morale. I love it. Good luck and have a wonderful trip.

Good news everybody!

We're now only 837 more advice threads like this from having to book Disney resorts 5000 days in advance, ADRs at 2 years out, and ordering appetizers 90 days before ADR time.

Seriously thou, you probably should be ASAP to make sure you get the package you want.

We booked the Sept '08 bounceback this past Oct.,knowing that we may have cancel, So I would definantly book it now! Luckily we will not be cancelling, but did have to call and change dates and extend from 3 nights to 7 nights (darn it, he he)

:thumbsup2 Yes! Book it- - better safe then sorry!

We booked for last Sept 2007 - early on in 2007, had to cancel the trip BUT ended up this trip's dates with with better temps and with the added benefit of holiday decorations! There wil be bigger crowds but we are still excited. We've been to WDW during this time frame in the past, and the added people just make it more exciting for us! We take advantage of early entry, fastpass, an afternoon break and then back to the parks to tour. :upsidedow
