Would you believe this story?

I've been thinking about this, and have come to this conclusion.. . .*yes*, I can see this happening! Reason why? There are an incredible number of jerks out there in the world. . I used the word *jerk* because the other word I was thinking is unacceptable on here! ;)

Some people live to be mean and nasty, and they take pleasure in hurting people. So yes, I can see this happening! :(

I can see this happening for one of two reasons:
1. There is more to the story
2. The boss is a idiot.

If it is #1...well, there is more to the story, and if we don't know the "more" it's hard to formulate an opinion.

If it is #2...well, the person who got fired is probably better off finding a new job with a better boss rather than working for an idiot.

ALL RIGHT--Fess up, GrinningGhost--- have you been stealing cookies???????!!!!!

Nope - wasn't me.;) But the cookie stealer is someone related to me. I didn't buy the story at all, and neither did some of our other relatives. We think the cookie stealer was either:

A) Smoking rather than eating a cookie
B) Stealing alot more than a cookie
C) Just WANTED to be fired so they didn't fight it, so now they can spend their days in a local slots casino.

The bakery is in a nationwide wholesale club, and it begins with a "S". You can figure it out I'm sure.;)

Thanks for the replies, most of you think like I do - that might be scary. :p

Could be true. I know a girl who was fired for eating one slice of cucumber. I know because I was standing right there when it happened and when she got caught. There were no other issues with her termination, it was written, for eating/stealing one slice of cucumber.

Hmmm... was there any chance that they were looking for a reason to fire her, and the cucumber incident was convenient? I've also considered that to be the "other part" of the story that we're not being told. That maybe she was on her way out anyway, and this just gave them the reason they were looking for.

They have been using it as a reason.
Or they may make quite a habit of that.
And maybe it was more than just ONE cookie one time.
That being said -- years ago a friend of ours had a sister who was working at a well known fast food chain. I don't recall if she was canned on the spot or severly reprimanded for sneaking a few fries one time when she had worked a long time with no food/break. (And was a teen.)
So anything is possible.

a lot of places will terminate an employee for such a thing, whether one cookie or 100 cookies, it avoids the legal hassle of determining what is acceptable and what isn't, it's easier to have a zero tolerance policy than to rationalize why you didn't fire someone who ate 6 cookies, but did fire someone who ate 7 cookies..., or why one employee was permitted to take one cookie per month for a year but the employee who took 12 cookies in one night was terninated.

seems petty, but it happens..

I remember watching one of the newsy/drama type shows a few years ago that discussed this issue. The segment that pertains to this thread was the Kroger employee that was responsible for baking the cookies. She had baked all the cookies and boxed them, but one was "broken." She ate it and was fired.

Yup, zero tolerance happens.

Now why I remember this, I have no idea. It's not like it will be a Trivial Pursuit question someday. :p

DH worked for a WELL known bread and cookie manufacturer....they make goldfish, too!!! There.....didn't say WHO it was, did I? :teeth: Just asked him if an employee could be fired there for taking one cookie. His reply......"YEP"!!!!

Disney will fire a food worker for eating one fry, even if it fell on the floor or is going in the trash at the end of the night. So I certainly believe in zero tolerance.

I guess zero tolerance does exist, but it just sounded way too extreme to me. This "cookie offender" is over 60 years old - I guess it doesn't matter what your age, if you break into the cookie jar, you're in big trouble.;)
