My boss who is a Vice President got a plate with home-made chocolates from one of his direct reports. They were sitting on his desk – the plate wasn’t wrapped, but there was a bow on it. Not sure if he’d “opened” it already, or if that’s how it came. Anyway, one of the managers that works in the area, but not in our department came through – stopped, looked in the office (my boss was away at a meeting), and went in. Came out chewing something. I said “did you just take a chocolate from that plate?” He said – “sure, why not?” Oh, I don’t know – CUZ THEY AREN’T YOURS!!!! I didn’t say that, but seriously?? Who does that?? :confused3

Note to self: Don’t leave anything on your desk that you don’t want eaten by a passer-by. :rolleyes1

That's pretty common in our office. If it's unwrapped on your desk it means you're sharing.

Maybe he didn't know they were a present. I used to bring in goodies and put them on my desk for everybody in the days before Christmas.:confused3

Make some candy with a healthy dost of Exlax. Keep it at work but hidden. When you see him coming down the hallway, set it out then hide around the corner. As soon as he is gone, but the candy back out of sight. :rotfl2:

I wouldn't do that...but when it comes to food in the workplace, some people aren't the least bit shy.

I wouldn't do it without asking somebody around...

But, sorry, if it is sitting out like that, it is fair game!!!
Lot's of people bring in extra goodies from home to share during the holidays.

Either the boss wanted to share, or he is just clueless, thinking he could leave that sitting out!

Hmmmm.... could be he didn't know, but it's an executive office, not an open desk. Around here, if it's up for grabs, we put it on my counter. Everyone passes by there and knows it's good to go. To me, if it's on a desk in an office or cube, it belongs to someone, but I can see that maybe someone might see it differently.

I think that may be illegal. Potentially hilarious, but illegal.

All of us have private offices with doors, so food items to share are placed in the kitchen. Usually with a note that says something like "eat me".

It didn't sound like it was 'just sitting out'. The goodies were sitting on a VP's desk, IN his office. So his door may have been open, but does that mean in office culture, that anyone can come into a Vice President's office and help themselves to whatever might be on their desk? YIKES!

I guess there is a culture of 'if it's not nailed down I can take it' that I haven't experienced before.

That's the way I would see it as well.. So - no - I would not just "help myself"..

That is pretty common place in our office, if you don't want someone else to eat it you better make it known... and still then I would recommend sealing it up with some duct tape :lmao:

I wouldn't go into someone's office to grab a snack unless I was invited or it was a clear bowl of candy.
There's a guy at my job who is like that. I swear he smells an open bag/box/anything from one floor down! He goes into private offices and just looks around like he owns the place, he's even interrupted Director's meetings! I understand things are put out but he isn't even in our department and it doesn't stop at one he'll take two for later!

Inside a private office, no I wouldn't. I would think that if the boss was sharing he would have put the plate in the break area/coffee area.

Id say that's bold. If it were in a common area, go for it. But if its on someone's desk or office, no.
