Would you be more or less active on these boards if registration weren't required?

First let me say that I am not questioning how these boards are run! I visit another travel forum and up until now they have had no registration system at all, but they are in the process of implementing one. People are in a tizzy over there because they think the boards will becoming boring and less active.

So I'm just wondering and using this forum as an example - would you post more or less if you were "anonymous"?

I don't think I would post anonymously. I'm not that shy.

It wouldn't matter one way or the other....I registered a long time ago and have posted ever since. Heck most people here know my name, DH's name, DS's name, where I'm from.....etc. I'm not this open all over the internet but over the years I've begun to think of alot of people here as my friends.

You mean I would have to post without telling Nativetxn who I am??? yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ( sorry Kath , I couldn't help it , LOL ) .
Honestly , I like it this way, it makes it a bit more personal.

Way back a long time ago, there was no registration here. You could pick your name you would like to associate with yourself for each post. Eventually you were required to put in an e-mail and then a valid e-mail. It actually made me shy away a little only because at the time I was dealing with harassment from some people I met over the internet so I was wary of that. Eventually you had to sign in here and that's when I decided to pick my username that I did. When we didn't have to sign in, I did always post under "Elaine" though and had I not been so harassed feeling I would have signed in with that name too here (both times I had to register ;)). So I can say truthfully it didn't matter to me if I had to sign in or not, but I do like this as you know who you are talking to at all times.

People do tend to get in a tizzy whenever some kind of chance is put upon them, Karista.
Years ago you did not have to register to post on the DIS. When Pete decided to institute a registration (I think that it had to do with the board software that he was changing to at that time? ) I don't think that it made ANY difference in the posting habits of most.
People will settle down and get used to it on your travel board - AND they will continue to post.

:)

Looks like we were posting at the same time, helenabear! :teeth:
GMTA! :)

Doesn't bother me one way or the other. If I go to a site where I think I'll be posting and they want me to register, I do. If I got to a site and they don't want me to register, I don't.

Whether or not people know who I am doesn't really change the nature of my posts. I think for some people it may. I do think there are people who like the anonymity of the internet, as they will post things that they wouldn't have the nerve to say in real life.

Pretty much anything I post on the internet I'd say to someone's face if we were having a conversation, so registering or not isn't an issue for me.

it wouldn't effect my posting style.

I like the way this site is, it's nice to know who you're talking (or listening) to. I wouldn't say anything here that I wouldn't say on the phone or in person so, I don't think it would make a difference in any of my posts.:D

I'd probably be less active if there wasn't any registration. I'd get confused about what I posted and what I didn't post.

Wasn't it my fellow emperor, Caesar who said, "I came, I saw, I registered, then I conquered (after providin a valid email address.)"

Hey if it is good enough for him it is good enough for me.

It wouldn't bother me either way, I would still post using my Beanie name! :)

I think, in the long run, it would decrease the posting on the board or change the community. Registration is an important tool in controlling spammers, banning posters etc. Without it things would get pretty ugly around here and I think a lot of the "gentler souls" would leave
