Would this work?

So we have had a 175 point contract at AKV for years. Since buying it we have purchased our own place in Florida so we have not used our points for 3 years. We ended up renting them out, which was fine but kind of a pain. We have talked about selling, but I really like the discounts and perks we get with DVC. If we purchased a small add-on (25 points) directly with DVC and then sold our 175 contract, would we still be eligible for the DVC perks and discounts?

Just a thought since the resale market looks pretty good right now.

Thanks!

Yes. Under current rules, that would work. It might be tough to rent out 25 points, though.

Being a FL resident, you'll already qualify for Annual Pass discounts the rest of us can't get... Those APs will get you most of the merch and dining discounts. Plus you qualify for TIW. If I was a local, I don't think I'd buy in to DVC for the perks. I'd do AP and TIW. You'll miss out on some tangential perks... like TOTWL or Member Lounges. I don't think it's that much.

Actually we do have annual passes (DVC Gold) as well and in June a lot of the times we were told DVC has a better discount. Like at Via Napoli I think the DVC discount was 15%, where the AP discount was 10%. And we actually do utilize the member lounge at Epcot quite a bit. With the kids, we have to travel in summer and the lounge is sweet relief in the middle of the day. :)

We are not local, unfortunately. Just have a house down there now.

Being a DVC member and Florida resident puts you in a better position to enjoy the extra perks like the free after hours parties. I visit WDW every 18 months and plan far in advance so it's a a lottery for me to be on site exactly when one is scheduled... and in fact I've never attended one. You can easily attend every party and they look a lot of fun reading reports. If I were a Florida resident I would keep a small contract for the perks. They may go away, but at the moment it would be worth it.
I rent the extra points I cannot use and most of the time it's in the 15-40 range, never had a problem to find someone willing to rent just a night or two. You won't be able to use a broker (they have a minimum number of points to rent) but for the same reason it's easy to rent them out using the rent board here.

If you buy one of the near park resorts, it probably would not be all that hard to find someone who would like a point transfer. Transfers are not as "labor intensive" as renting reservations.

I agree. The perks right now wouldn't be all that extra for a local that already has access to the gold florida pass. I suppose you'd get the platinum plus (for this year only) right now, but if you don't go to the water parks or visit during the blackout dates, there really is no reason to need the platinum plus.

*ETA -- I see you later clarify that you're not a FL resident. That changes the calculus then. 25 point add-on would work -- but as noted above, renting those points out could prove difficult since they would only be good enough to secure a few days at most. A lot of the rental headache for must less revenue per transaction.
