Would this make Jury Duty better for you?

I think it is funny you think most counties have 3/4 of a million dollars lying around due to rounding errors.

For the ones that need 200 folks EVERY day of the year (which is what I computed)...yeah, they are rounding errors.

Most rural areas don't need jurors more than once a week for cases...they just don't have that many crimes/civil cases occurring that justify a huge pull of people every day.

So, when it's 200 folks a day, you're talking metros with at least 100K people...and for them, as an annual expense, that's a rounding error...

Hmm, looks like you angered the Jury Duty gods by starting this thread.
I'm retired. I have the time now, and I could use the money! Of course, at my age, it will be a matter of juggling Doctor's appointments around jury duty, not work!

While this may be true, at least in California there are time limits. I have seen cases get dismissed for the prosecution dragging things out too long.

§ 1382 PC – Speedy Trial Rights & Grounds for Dismissal

California Penal Code § 1382 grants defendants the right to be tried within 60 days of being charged with a felony. For a misdemeanor or infraction, one has the right to trial
  • within 45 days if out of custody or
  • within 30 days if in custody.
These time requirements help protect your right to a speedy trial. This right is protected by the United States and California constitutions.
That is def a state by state thing. There is not set amount of time set by the constitution. So if you can come up with decent excuses, it can drag out for ever. Not to say that you wouldn't have a civil rights violation suit, but there isn't a federally set time that counts as a speedy trial.

I am supposed to just KNOW that you did not have a car? That information was not in your post. Regardless of your situation, I still do not feel the court should pay for jurors meals. To echo what you said "Sorry you can not accept that."
You aren't supposed to KNOW. You just aren't to ASSUME everyone has your situation. I have a car. My husband needs to use the one we have to go to work. I'm not asking for them to pay for my lunch just to provide a clean space for me to eat it. I'm sorry this is such a trigger for you.
