I know our local office & school supply stores include homeschoolers in their teacher discounts,:teacher: and wondered if Disney would as well. Sounds like a longshot, but I've heard that the teacher discounts are even better than AP--is that true??? :confused3

Very doubtful, you have to show proof of employment.

I could be mistaken but I think only Swan/Dolphin have teacher discounts. As was mentioned above you would have to provide proof of employment. We were also a homeschool family and at least could take advantage of other discounts and timeframes that might not have been available to those whose children followed the school calendar. It never hurts to call and ask though about any discounts you might be eligible for. ---Kathy

Teacher discount is only available at the Swan and Dolphin. You have to show proof of employment at check-in. Last time I stayed at the Dolphin, they did not ask for my documentation, but you never know. At Disney resorts, the best discounts are normally for AP holders and FL residents but they do often release general discounts that are pretty good. AAA also offers discounts on Disney resorts if you have a membership.

I guess that would depend upon if the homeschooling family had a licensed teacher? I put band aids on my kids cuts and take care of them when they are sick, but that does not make me a nurse. I don't think I would qualify for the nursing discount.:confused3

I also think that S/D require some sort of proof of certification as well... not just proof of employment.

I do not think home schooling will qualify as a "teacher". I know you are their teacher but you are not a "teacher" by their terms unless you have gone to college, gotten your degree and became certified or licensed depending on the state you live in... that is what they mean..

In local area's they do that to help you with supplies. I know for a fact, SeaWorld requires all documentation for their teacher discount. I was just reading it and sent it to a friend of mine.
What would the S/D have to offer that is helping you in the area of supplies... do you see where I am coming from? I am not trying to sound rude, but that is how they look at things...
I may be wrong, but that was the impression I was under. I am not a teacher, but a para and am employed by a school and do not qualify for the discount. I do have a school issued ID card and pay stubs.. same as the teachers have...

For past trips to Swan and Dolphin I've shown my photo ID from my college that has 'Faculty' listed as my status and I've taken a copy of a current Adjunct Faculty contract and they've accepted both. Like a previous poster, there have been times when they didn't ask for any proof at all. They will accept a Teaching Certificate and also give the discount if you can prove that you're a retired teacher. I think, but I'm not sure, that school administration employees also qualify and I've taken that to mean pretty much any non-teaching support personnel would make the cut, but I'd call first to verify this.

I think this is unnecessary. I know many people do not understand homeschooling, but it is a longstanding American tradition that produces intelligent, well rounded children. Though this has been proven for generations, the idea is still met with animosity and criticism. While it is certainly not for everyone, for those families that are able to give of their time, and practice with care, love, and devotion, homeschooling is a wonderful option!
As for the OP's question, it is harmless, and no different than the multiplicity of similar "what discounts can I manage to get" threads on these boards. Going to Disneyworld is an expensive venture, particularly for homeschooling families who have decided to teach their own children, pay for their own textbooks, supplies, outings, etc. not to mention sacrificing a major source of income (time is money!!!).
Personally..... I cannot WAIT to homeschool my daughter! I can't tell you how much I look forward to experiencing American history, great literature, English, Japanese, art, music, sports, algebra, yes, even science, all over again with her.

Disney may not offer discounts to homeschoolers... but it is homeschool friendly. And for that I thank them! Homeschooling parents most CERTAINLY deserve acknowledgement and a standing ovation (especially my own. Thanks, Mom).:cheer2:

Whew! Nobody’s saying homeschooling is not successful. However, in order to be eligible for a discount or other perk afforded to people employed in a particular field, one would have to be able to provide proof of employment. Plus, the discounts in question are NOT provided by Disney but rather by two hotels NOT owned by Disney but on that company’s property.

So, putting on a bandaid is all a nurse is good for?:headache: Lovely.

I took my HSLDA card and my letter from the state accepting our HS as legal, and was given the discount without a problem.

A retitred teacher is not employed by anyone...right?

how fast the tone can change in a thread. I dont believe kmjmom is belittleing any profession. I believe she is just stating that a degree is needed. I am sure we all are guilty somewhere sometime of reading too much into the written words here.

OUCH! That really stings... comparing a mom who homeschools to a mom who puts on a band aid is not even in the same ballfield.
The difference is a mom who homeschool is that child/ren's teacher- she does all of the work- teaching- and so on... a mom who puts on a band aid is not considered the child's nurse. OY! I'd better sign off now.

For the record, I do think a mom who gives all of her time teaching her children year round should get the discount. :teacher:

yeah...that is what a negative analogy will do for a thread...

Kmjmom managed to either crack on homeschoolers or nurses...take your pick.

Settle down folks, settle down.

As some folks would have problems with belittling a home school educator, likewise some would have problems with a home school educator considering themselves equal to a School district educator that has a college degree and numerous training and continuing educations hours under their belt.

Before you start with me about this......I have no opinion myself on the pros/cons of homeschooling over public school or vice versa.

I'm not sure that the analogy in question could be taken any other way than being offensive to homeschooling families. My wife homeschools our children, and also teaches in our local Classical Conversations homeschool group. Our kids play basketball, football, soccer, go on field trips, and are all around great kids.

They are learning foreign languages, and in depth on subjects that were never covered in public schools because public teachers must teach to the lowest common denominator for the slowest kid in the class.

I'll take the pepsi challenge on homeschool vs. public school any day of the week.

oh and by the way.... I pay for public education AND homeschool education, how nice of a guy am I?

band aids, indeed.

To the OP, call the S/D and ask. They would know the policy.

As for reading the comparison as a slight, get over it. If there is a chefs discount, everyone who cooks would qualify. Is there a bus drivers discount? I drive my kids to school everyday in my minivan, wouldn't I qualify? I didn't read any slight given to home schoolers or nurses. The bottom line is you can ask the reservations people and they can tell you if you qualify.

Hope I didn't offend anyone with my comparisons.

LOL, just pointing out a fact about why the turn in the thread...no need to get your panties in a wad... Perhaps you need to take a deep breath, and let it go...;)

OP, when you call, have them put on the reservation that you are a homeschooler, and will have verification...something of that sort. Made it quick, easy and there were no questions upon check-in.

Hey java, we figured out that our family alone, thus far has saved the state $52,000 by homeschooling. Add that to your list!:thumbsup2

To just clarify my post here. :scared1:

I, in no way intended to slight nurses or any other professionals who achieved their title through a chosen degree/certification program. I apologize if it was interpreted as offensive. :sad2: What I wanted to clarify is that I respect the personal choice to homeschool, as I would expect respect for the fact that I hold a Bachelors and two Masters degrees in education and take my career seriously. I don't agree that you are automatically granted the title of teacher because you choose to homeschool. Just as my limited knowledge of any other skill that I may perform within my own home would not make me worthy of the title of carpenter, electrician or chef!
