about diapers... I never had children so I may be wrong in my thinking...

I was very unconfortable when a guest at POR took off her childs diaper and dropped it in the garbage can and then marched the child into the swimming pool.

I was thinking that if the child needed to wear a diaper in her bathing suit in the first place, what would keep her from doing her thing in the swimming pool?

I lost all my desire to go in the pool after they went in.

Was I too fussy? It this what people do with children? I really hope not.

You are NOT being too fussy!
They make swim diapers for a reason!!!!
I have a child and I wouldn't want to go swimming in a pool that my child may "potty " in!!!!! Why would I expect others to want to.

The answer is, it depends.

We put "little swimmers" (swimming diapers) on our kids until they're FULLY potty trained.

But if the child was "in the midst" of potty training, and just wearing diapers to prevent/handle any accidents, I can see why Mom might not think a diaper is necessary for the pool. Again, I likely would have put a swimmer on anyway...but "regular diapers" don't fare too well in pools, so....

You are absolutely not being fussy about this. I have a child and there is NO WAY I let her into a pool without a swim diaper when she wasn't potty trained. If I'd seen this I wouldn't have let my child go into that pool let alone myself.

Case in point-- last August my daughter and I were staying at the All-Star Movies. It was the last day of a lovely stay and we spent it at the pool. What should have been a nice swim time was interrupted by a 'Caddyshack' moment. Basically someone pooped in the pool. :scared1: I yanked my child out, showered her down profusely and slathered her in antibactierial. They closed the pool that day and ever since then I refuse to go back.

To me, there is no middle ground on this subject. Unless the child is potty trained he/she should were a swim diaper.

Swim diapers only catch the back end business anyway, liquids flow right on through.

A swim diaper only catches poop... pee goes right through it. So if the mom knew that the child wasn't going to poop in the time she was in the pool (most kids are pretty regular)...then no it isn't something to be alarmed about at all.

That said, if my child wasn't potty learning yet, I would put a swim diaper on him... if he was...I may or may not depending on the last time he pooped.

Chlorine levels in public pools pretty much kills anything that might hurt you. but there is still the GROSS factor to deal with..Reality is it's pointless to shut down a pool for one little Jimmy Floater, when most of the little tykes and some big folks are peeing without giving it a second thought..

Hello everyone,

Nothing wrong with this! Swim diapers were only brought out about 8 to 10years ago, my youngest was the only who used them! Regular diapers don't fair well in pools, so with the boys we used nothing, never had any accidents!
Most kids are regular, and usually won't poop in water!

There is definitely something wrong with it and it should have been reported to a lifeguard. It is on the rules for the pool, that they must wear swim diapers and if a child still needs them during the day, they definitely need them in the pool.

As to swim diapers being something only used in the last 10 years or so, seat belts were not always used either but surely we don't want to regress to that time.

I am glad to know that I am not the only person that feels the way I did in this situation.

I've always consider the swim diapers more of a mental comfort! They really don't do much...and we closed the pool almost once a week for 'floaters' when I was a resort lifeguard in WDW.

I was going to say the same thing about disposable swim diapers. Pee goes right through. I did use them though because of poop. I would never have just put my children in the pool without anything at all. Then I ended up purchasing real swim diapers (like the kind you wash) because of the leaking of the disposables. They actually hold pee a bit better. And definitely hold the poop.

This thread is headed straight to the toilet....lol

We just got back from YC..I was surprised I saw a few toddlers without swimmers...Our 14th mth old doesnt leave home without them..well this trip yes, they were delivered by Garden Grocer...
If they are not potty trained, whether "front" or "back" ..I think they should have one on. As a parent, I would not want to worry if my little one..had to go and was not protected..it would be unpleasant for everyone!

I'm pretty certain that I read in the Disney rules somewhere over the last little while that swim diapers are required for children who aren't potty trained. Still I don't think they really make all that much difference -- got to trust the chlorine.

When DD was about two she choked on some pool water and threw up in our local pool during a swimming lesson. It was ALMOST for ME to go back. Totally embarassing although we didn't do anything on purpose. We didn't see the aftermath because we jetted out of there pretty quickly although I'm pretty certain they closed the pool. They then cleaned it up and opened it right up again. Someone else had a similar experience a few weeks later and we continued the class in another pool (there are two side-by-side)

Not all that uncommon for pools to have situations like this. If you swim in public pools there is no telling WHAT has happened before you actually got in. Poop happens. Yuck, but it does.

I wouldn't fuss over a diaper versus a little swimmer. The ONLY difference; the diaper absorbs (a lot), and the swimmer doesn't. Either way, poop is caught and all else goes right though. The only problem is that the parent has to carry around a kid with a 10lb diaper if they don't have a swimmer.

Pools can handle #1, but #2 is the problem. I'd only worry about diaperless children.

I thought the Pool Rules stated that swim diapers must be worn, maybe I am wrong. But I do know from experience working for am MD, urine is sterile and you cannot pass on disease through urine unless there is blood in it and blood can be microscopic, but poop carries alot of disease, IE: E-coli and Hepatitis A among other things.
