We aren't big eaters and want to go here for something different.

So far DD(14) just wants to do a side of Basmatti rice and wants the mango pudding and she will also nibble on bread service.

DH will choose a full entree

I will choose bread service and salad as my meal b/c I've heard the bread service is wonderful but there is no way we could do it as a starter and then all get entrees too!! Again - we are VERY SMALL eaters. OH - I will also do the chai creme for dessert.

So, where i need the help is with the bread and salad. I've looked at it here on DIS and i'm not sure what to go with. i don't like spicy. so I will list what was on the DIS for their menu and if you have tried the bread or salad please advise me on what you liked and why or which things i should avoid b/c they are spicy.

Here is the menu items ...

Indian Style Bread service - Choose from four breads,
Naan,
Roti,
Paratha
Paneer Paratha.

Choice of three accompaniments.
Mint and onion Raita,
Cucumber Raita,
Coriander Raita,
Mango Chutney,
Garlic-ginger Pickle,
Mango-lime Pickle,
Roated Red Bell Pepper Hummus,
Tamarind chutney -

Soups/Salads
Bhel Puri salad - Choice of three salads - $6.99
Chickpeas With Cucumber and Tomato - Choice of Three Salads for 6.99 - $6.99
Kachumbar - Choice of three salads - $6.99
Roasted Beets - Choice of Three salads for 6.99 - $6.99
Watermelon, lime and radish salad - choice of three salads - $6.99

thanks for any advice, thoughts you have on these things :)

haven't had the bread service for a couple of years, but my recollection was that most of the spreads are spicy. The waiter was able to tell me which was NOT spicy (and steered me well on that...the other people in our party wanted the spicy stuff, so they were able to confirm what the waiter told us about which was/wasn't spicy...and some of the choices are VERY spicy.)

can't help you on the salads, at all...didn't have any of them. None of them are
traditional lettuce salads, so did not appeal to me at all.

Can tell you this, though, if you would like an entree that is not spicy...there is a section called "slow cooked in gravy" meats, served with choice of basmati rice or rice pilaf. The beef short ribs are very good--taste like American pot roast with just a tiny hint of cinnamon--you can choose two of the meats (they serve in small bowls) but if you want all non-spicy foods, they'll let you just get two bowls of the beef short ribs since the other choices are spicy. Just had this a couple of weeks ago and it is not the least bit hot/spicy.

These are the dips that are not spicy (as in hot, almost everything at Sanaa is made with spices, but not necessarily spicy spices).

Cucumber Raita
Red Pepper Hummus
Tamarind Chutney
Mango Chutney
Mint Chutney

As for the salads, the Roasted Beets and Chickpea Cucumber Tomato are not spicy. The Watermelon Radish has a tad of a sour/spicy note to it. I have not tried the Kachumbar or Bhel Puri yet.

Sanaa is WONDERFUL! The servers are very knowledgeable so don't hesitate to ask questions. They will be able to guide you on what to order if you tell them what you want or don't want.

Naan
Paneer Paratha

Cucumber Raita
Garlick pickle
Mango Chutney

I had the sustainable fish and it was incredible!

My son wants to go back to have the hamburger! He said it was the best burger he ever ate!

I'm allergic to Cilantro. I know a lot of Indian dishes contain it but was wondering if you noticed a lot of dishes at Sanaa include it. I guess he/she could check with the chef, but would the waiter know the ingredients? Thanks.

Love the mango chutney and the red pepper hummus. We usually get all naan for te bread ( it is just so good). If I remember correctly, there wer 3 pieces.

Choice of three accompaniments. Cucumber Raita, Mango Chutney, Roasted Red Bell Pepper Hummus were delicious.

I did get all 4 types of bread for my bread service and I liked them all. One is very oniony, not sure which one though since they all came out together on the same plate.

I can't speak to the salads since I haven't tried them

Has anyone had the scallops appetiser? Looks amazing :goodvibes

The scallops were delicious - I had them for my entree with an order of the whole grain pilaf. Made for a very nice lighter meal along with the bread service. We only eat the naan, by the way. It's just so simple and amazing and puffy and buttery...we just can't bring ourselves to try the others.

OP, I don't feel like any of the food here is overly spicy. In fact, I really think you need to ask for more spice if you want it. In addition to the scallops, I have had the short ribs, the green curry shrimp and the hamburger on naan at lunch (which tasted much like a less garlicky gyros sandwich with the cucumber raita. Was very tasty - not like a typical hamburger.) My kids (DS13 and DD10) love Sanaa. They will eat much more than just the Basmati rice. I hope your DD14 will try to be adventurous when you dine here! Unfortunately, I can't speak for the salads....one of the foods I just won't eat are onions and I was told they are in every one of the salads (didn't seem possible but that's what I was told.) If you want a light meal, I do recommend that scallop appetizer with rice or pilaf - so yummy!

Thanks everyone - this is VERY helpeful :)
DD won't be brave - she's the pickiest eater of the century i think. lol. and b/c of it she eats like a BIRD - tiny portions all the time so she'll eat the rice and have the dessert and she'll be pretty happy with that. She'll be ready to much as soon as we get back from dinner too and we'll make her eat fruit or vegi since there will be none with her supper. lol it's all normal for us.

My youngest is Very picked too. He usually asks the chef to make a grilled cheese sandwich and that seems to do the trick. My older DS usually gets the plain grilled chicken breast (no seasonings but grilled nicely) with the plain rice.

We loved the naan and paratha (I think that may have been the oniony one the pp mentioned- very good). With that we got the cucumber raita, red pepper hummus and mango chutney - none of these were spicy.

Mom had the tomato soup which she thought was fantastic - our server recommended it to us.

The best part about Sanaa is getting a table by the windows and being able to watch the animals eat dinner at the same time!:thumbsup2

I'm allergic to Cilantro. I know a lot of Indian dishes contain it but was wondering if you noticed a lot of dishes at Sanaa include it. I guess he/she could check with the chef, but would the waiter know the ingredients? Thanks.

If you are allergic to cilantro or anything else, I would talk to the chef, not the waiter. The chef has full knowledge of all the ingredients and is very willing to come out and talk with you and accomodate you. I have several things I'm allergic to and some of the things I thought I would be able to eat, I could not. There are a lot of ingredients in many of their dishes.
Like I said, they are very accomodating, so don't take the chance of not talking with the chef!

Yes, it is pretty good from what I remembered, very light. The sauce was really great.

Of the salad samplers, I loved the watermelon one and beet. The cucumber one is an acquired taste, I didn't mind it. I didn't love it and wouldn't have it again.

There is cilantro in a lot of dishes, so I would make sure the chef knows someone is allergic.

I have to agree. We have some allergies, too, and the chef's at Sanaa have always been some of the best we've encountered.
