I am staying at my brother's house this weekend, watching his dog while he and his family are out of town. He has dialup internet, but I only have my work laptop with me. I turned it on, and lo and behold, there is a wireless network that my laptop's wireless cad picked up, undoubtedly one of the houses nearby in the subdivision. Well, being the computer geek that I am, I searched for, and found the address of the wireless router that is broadcasting the signal out to everyone. So it is very cool to surf the net wirelessly.

My question is, since I have total access to the router, would it be wrong to change the password, just to teach the person a lesson???? The wannabe hacking side of me wants to change it, but the respectable brother tells me not to. What should I do?????

:smooth: :earseek: :smooth: :earseek:

Mind your own business and find something more constructive to do with your time. JMHO.

Be a respectable brother...no brownie points for screwing up somebodies router....:(

I am only kidding of course. I would never actually change anything., but this is a good lesson to everyone who has a wireless router. Make sure you know how to disable your SSID, so that a stranger can't find your network and wreak havoc.

I think I would try to find out where this person lived and let them know. Even if you changed the password, they may be so naieve that they don't know what happened.:(

Don't do it. <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_2_109.gif' border=0></a> Nobody likes hackers.

this just happened to us. My parents just got a new laptop and brought it over for my husband to install something on it. He too noticed that he was picking up on someone's wireless network. He was nice and left it alone though. :p

I'll behave, but I just had a thought. Whaf it is a DISer who left their wireless open?? I wonder if there is anyone in Plainfield, IL....... Hmmmmmm

~Jiminy Cricket.

I can hear him saying those words just like I was Dan Murphy listening to them right now at WDW. :teeth:

It's not your place to change someones password. INstead, why don't you try to contact the person and let them know what's going on. It's very possible they don't have a clue.

Most people don't realize that other people can pick up their wireless.

Anyway get this, Northern Michigan University in Marquette MI wants to broaden their wireless connections, so you can be way off campus and pick it up.

Will they be able to distinguish between school users and community members using the wireless. I couldn't believe it when I read this in their newsletter.

Brian..I was hoping you were just joking. I didn't think you become a hacker!;)
