We are flying into Detroit Metro and our flight gets in at midnight. We are going to just get a hotel at the airport that night, and my dad will come get us in the morning. I will have my mom with me who doesn't move around all that well. I am wondering if it is worth the extra cost to stay at the Westin at the airport, where the shuttle goes every 10 minutes, or save a bit and get an off site hotel. We will have a shuttle either way, but I wasn't sure how long we would have to wait given the fact that it will be about 1 am by the time we get on the shuttle. Thoughts?!

Are you flying on an airline that uses the terminal that they hotel is in? If not I would save the money and stay elsewhere

If you are flying into concourse A or B then you should consider staying at the Westin which is located at center of concourse A. It is very convenient but you will have to decide if it is worth it. If you are going Into concourse D, save money and go off site. Marriott and Sheraton are very close with good shuttle service.

If you are flying into A, B or C concourse I would say it is worth it. If you are flying into D concourse I would stay off site at another hotel.

not sure which we will be in, except it's not McNamara....flying Southwest. But will the shuttle be OK at 1 am?

With Southwest you will be coming into North Terminal/D Concourse. The shuttle buses do run 24/7 but that time of night it might be longer than 10 minutes.

I was wondering really whether the airport shuttle to the Westin may be more reliable at that time of night than an off site hotel shuttle??

If you aren't flying into McNamara, I don't think the Westin is worth the extra money. It is convenient if you're right there but I've never heard anything to suggest their shuttle is appreciably better than the Sheraton or other comparable hotels in the area. We usually stay at the Four Points, which is a Sheraton brand, when we have a very late arrival or absurdly early departure (we live ~2 hours from the airport) and have never had any complaints about their shuttle. It runs continuously, so while they say every 30 min we've never waited that long even when we watched the shuttle leave while waiting for our bags and had to wait for its return.
