I've seen some real flops, but I'd vote for "Kiss Of The Spider Woman" - that was just so bad, even if someone GAVE me tickets for it again, I'd pass. ;)

What's your pick for the worst musical ever? Not because of the cast, or set design, but just the story in general?

Carrie - while a really scary book and movie....

must have been a pretty terrible musical.

"Victor/Victoria". I saw the movie & loved it. My sister got tickets to the musical & couldn't go, so she gave them to my mom & me. We even saw Julie Andrews in it, but it was awful. I couldn't tell you one song from the show, and I just remember thinking I'm so glad I didn't pay for this! And it was a nice night out with mom.

And the worst show I saw (but I liked the music) was "Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". I saw it with the guy from "Young & the Restless". Like I said, the music was great, but he was only OK, and the audience full of screaming women (including one that I went with) didn't make it a fun evening.

We saw "Seussical" quite a while ago, and it was completely horrible. It's still around, and I heard they've made so many changes to it that it's like a totally different show. That can't be a bad thing, but we won't be seeing it to find out for sure.

I thought Aida was pretty bad, actually. Over-produced, repetitive music.

I'm also not a big fan of Sunday at the Park with George...not that I've seen a production of it, but I was once stuck in the car with someone playing the cast album and it was torture. I like Sondheim...but only in small doses.

I also saw a really tired production of South Pacific on tour. It's probably my least favorite of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classics.

I've sat here for 2 hours trying to remember the name of the worst musical I've seen and finally remembered!! THE PARADE!

Ever heard of it? It won Tony awards, I believe, and we caught it during a tour. We had season tickets so we went. People started just walking out about an hour in, which never happened at any show I've been to, and we decided to just see if it got better.

It didn't. When it ended, very few clapped or stayed around. We just kind of looked at each other and went "that was interesting!"

SO BAD. And I enjoy dark stories but this was just strange.

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

Well the only 2 I have been to recently are the nutcracker and lion king. I thought they were both equally horrid and hope to never see another show, musical, play or the like again.

While probably not the worst musical ever, after seeing the performance from The Three Penny Opera I'm sure not rushing to see it. I've never been a big fan of The Pajama Game and tonight hasn't changed my mind about the show.

Grease
Rocky Horror Picture Show

Never saw the stage show of either, but they have been on television dozens of times, and I can't tolerate more than a few minutes. Blech.

Passion - how it won the Tony for best musical I do not know; the competition must have been weak that year

I've got no interest in seeing any of the Disney musicals, either. For free in the theme park (ala MGM's Beauty and the Beast), but not for the price of tickets these days.

(Putting on my flame suit) CATS! It had to be the most confusing and boring show, I will never understand all the hype.

Another vote for Cats! Waaaaaay overrated! Also on my "I would not see if you paid me list" are Joseph and the Amazingly Horrible Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ let's-write-worst-thing-ever-and-call-it-Superstar.

Yet another vote for Cats. Saw it on Broadway. I could hardly keep my eyes open during the first half, and the guy (a total stranger) sitting on the other side of me than my husband, did fall asleep.

No No Nanette, seen years ago on Broadway, was not very good either, plotwise anyway.

the worst in my opinion-"damn yankees" and "pajama game"-both seem like someone said "hm, lets find something to tie these songs together into a play!".

worst show to be a performer in (ensamble) "a funny thing happened on the way to the forum"-whoever wrote the stage directions must have hated actors. there's a scene wherein 1 line is said "the plague, the plague, the plauge, the plauge" and the instructions are to exit on the last word, a split second later another actors screams out one word and actors who have just exited are supposed to reappear as different characters (totaly different costumes, wigs, shoes...)

Worst one I saw was that roller skating abominaton "Starlight Express"

Also, CATS totally sucked.. what was with that UFO that came down? :confused3

I saw Phantom of the Opera in Philly and thought it was rediculous. People were cheering and carrying on about how wonderful it was, and all I kept thinking was "it's almost over...it's almost over...it's almost over". Maybe I just didn't 'get it', but I thought it was a total yawn-fest.

UGH!

I'm glad I'm not the first one to say it since I know I'm in the minority on this but I hated Phantom of the Opera when I saw it on Broadway, too! I'm a person who LOVES musicals. I have seen and am a huge fan of Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Wicked (had to have the soundtracks and still can't get enough of them), and a long list of older musicals, but I just don't get this one. None of the music was memorable to me except for "Music of the night" and "All I ask of you" which I had heard before seeing it and I still don't think they are such great songs. There are no upbeat musical numbers. There are no happy or comedic moments. It is just a bizarre, dark and depressing story. I tried watching the movie when it came out to see if I felt any differently about it, but I came away with the same feeling.

We have a great Musical theatre of Idaho....and they put on a great version of Sussical.
I also have to admit the I hate Grease, am not a huge fan of Cats (although we did sponsor the costume for Old Dutoronomy :) ) and I think Phantom is way too dark for my taste.

Grease the movie is one of my favs but when I went to see the stage show I literally fell asleep half way through!
