Worried about neighbours' cat

Our neighbours' cat has been in our back garden crying since early this morning. It lives in the house opposite, and it looks as though they could be away - we don't know them very well, just to say, "Hello".

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but every time I try to go near it, it runs away. I think it's just hungry, but I'm reluctant to feed it, because I don't want to encourage it to hang around.

OK - I know nothing about cats, but could you put some food on the neighbours property? Maybe leave it on the front step, or a side path? At least that way you know it's not starving, but you're not teaching it to come to your house for food.

My catty friend suggests checking if the neighbours are home, or if the cat flap is working, maybe it's got locked out while they are away?

........I'd suggest calling round to see if they are away and check with their neighbours to see if they are looking after the cat whilst the owners are away.
I wouldn't feed the cat until you know for sure.
It's unlikely that the owners would leave it without making arrangements for the cat to be fed and watered. Maybe someone is dropping around during the day to feed the cat.
However if it goes on and you cannot find anyone who is caring for the cat, it is worth calling the RSPCA - they will make checks to ensure the cat is cared for.

Don't worry about it. Cats are independent creatures perfectly able to feed themselves, even if some people a squimish with this. There's no chance of a frost so it can easily find a warm place to sleep.

I'd only get involved if it's injured and then go via the RSPCA. If everythings OK the neighbours might get upset because you intimated that they were neglecting their animal.

Any news on the kittie?? I personally would do like Bev said and put some food on the neighbours property. Have you tried knocking yet? While it is eating you could see if it is injured at all.

Let us know how you get on

I've been out this afternoon and just got back. The neighbours' car is now on the drive, which means they're obviously not away. But the cat is on my drive still crying, so maybe it's not theirs after all.

I think I'll wait until all the neighbours are home from work and then go around them all and see if anyone knows whose it is.

Poor kittie

I would pop around and just ask them - can't do any harm! Have you seen the cat around before??

Sounds like checking it's not lost or stray would be a good idea them try the RSPCA and maybe the local vet (incase anyone has reported a cat missing there).

Good luck! (from a house full of cat lovers apart from the DH who suffers in relative silence ;) )

Maybe its a stray or abandoned puddy cat?
Also it might be hungry or if its a male cat it might be on "heat" lol if you get what i mean and it might smell a female puddy cat around the place?
Also if its a female cat it could be pregnant?

If it's still hanging around i would ring the RSPCA. They will sort the cat out!
