We are going to Disney in November. We go every year, and never walk through the countries. My husband says theres nothing for kids (we have a 9 & 4 year old). Does anyone have any tips on places to go??

He's right. I just got back with a 5 and 2 year old (girls). We went to Norway only for a princess luncheon at Akershus. If you got girls, Id recommend making reservations...if they are into princesses. There were about five princesses there.

Also, some characters hang out in the countries...like Snow White will be in Germany, Belle will be in France, Aladdin and Jasmine will be in Morocco, Mulan in China... But they wont be there all the time, so I wouldnt go there just to see them. (Best place for character meet and greet is Toon Town in MK, in morning, in the gift shop between Mickey and Minnies house.)

Our kids love World Showcase. There's the Maelstrom ride, the excellent street entertainment (Don't miss Sergio in Italy, who involves children in his act; Myuki in Japan who does amazing candy creations for the kids ((and for free!!)); the amazing Off Kilter, who seem to be a favorite with kids......).

El Rio del Tiempo (Mexico ride) is also a hit with kids. Then there are the puppets for sale in China, that kids can play with even if they don't buy one, the drums at the Outpost, pearls in Japan, British Invasion in the UK (kids seem to enjoy them, too!), not to mention the Kidcot Fun Stops, Goofy's Epcot Guide and the Epcot Passport. Plus, there's all that cool stuff to look at in the shops in the hopes Mom and Dad will spring for a present. ;)

I would have to say that out of all the things at WDW, World Showcase is my kids' least favorite (now ages 6 & 9, both boys). There are rides in Mexico & ?? Norway - Maelstrom, and the kids can decorate a neat mask at each country, but that was about all mine were into. I personally would love a few hours to stroll WS alone or with adults, so I could appreciate what they've done there. I'd say if you have an hour, do it, you can get through it quickly if they're not stopping to make the masks. If you're pressed for time & absolutely have to skip something, save it for another year when the kids are older, and maybe have learned more about some of the countries in school to make it interesting for them.

I just came back and I agree with the poster who said the princess dinner/breakfast is about the only thing that will interest kids back there. Most of the kids bf and I saw at Epcot in general (I'm talking 10 and under) were miserable and bored. Quite a few parents we would talk to on the bus would say how their kids were bored at epcot and asked to leave. I think you should try it with them and if they are bored I would leave.

As far as characters go we saw belle, princess aurora, jasmine, aladin, mary poppins, and the winnie the pooh characters in their respective countries.

World Showcase has Kidcots......they can get passports and have them signed and stamped in each country and they can do the masks.....I don't have kids, but I have seen tons of kids having a blast making the masks!!!!

This is what I was going to mention! The kids I saw having the most fun were doing the Kidcot stuff-lots of crafts, and feeling like each new country is an accomplishment as they collect their "passport stamps"!

My oldest (he's been there at age 9-10 and age 11-12) loves the world showcase. To him it's like traveling around the world. My youngest (there at age 11 months and age 2.5) liked it well enough. He didn't complain and seemed to enjoy it, though he tells me now that Maelstrom scared him.

World Showcase is a family favorite! We love walking around to all the countries. I added a page for each country to the autograph books I made. My kids loved going around to the Kidcot stations to make the masks and they had the CM's from each country sign a greeting in their books. We have tried several resturants and have plans to try some more this trip. The entertainment is great and there are a few fun rides. The kids even like the shopping. Some unique things you can't find elsewhere at WDW. It is also very educational and since we are missing school, that is a big plus. It is a super change of pace for an afternoon into evening. We also loved Illuminations. We have gone out on the water in Breathless twice during Illuminations and it was such a great way to experience it. As you can see, I would recommend that you go!!

My kids always enjoy the world showcase. They enjoy the masks. WHatever country you go to first, you pick up this mask on a stick, and at each country they tag on a little die-cut shape. the kids color the mask and the shape. Not much of a craft really. But they like finding them. Of course you always have to go through the most shops possible to get to them. The husband is the one who gets bored here!

Then there are ths shows you happen upon. Like the Japanese drummers. The ladies with the big skirts in France. The statue people in Italy. And American Experience and the singers there are always a hit.

The part NOT popular with the kids are the travel movies. Especially the ones you have to stand through. UGH. WE big people don't like them either.

If your kids are totally into checking off rides and characters and running to the next one, they won't like it. I'll admit my kids like museums better than most kids, so maybe we're a bunch of geeks, but we have a good time :D

by the way, last trip the kids were 10, 7 and 5. They also enjoyed it at 8, 5, and 3.

I totally agree :thumbsup2

Your list says you are staying at AS Sports in 3 days, is that correct?? We will be there in 2 days, hope to see you there. I would love to take a stroll through WS but I don't think my 2 sons, ages 13 and 17 would be interested in doing so. Thank goodness they are older so my husband and I can leave them in FW to ride the rides there, we just give them a walkie talkie to get ahold of us if need be.

I went with my family back in December. Our DD4, DD3 and DS1 really loved the British Invasion, as did my wife and I. The kids were dancing their hearts out while we took a load off our feet.

One thing that no one else has mentioned are the acrobats in China. They performed some truly amazing balancing acts. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before the show to get a decent spot or you will have to sit on the hard concrete.

My girls are 2,6,10,12 and they love the World Showcase. We were in Disney
5 days earlier in the month and visited the World Showcase 3 times. My girls love all the different counties and the people. They did the passport thing and loved seeing their names written in different languages. In fact my oldest is using the different spellings for a project she is working on. See, we did learn something while we skipping school ;) We did not do any of the movies, maybe another time. Since they won't let you take in strollers the lazy person inside me did not want to carry the 2 year old for that long while standing in one spot. :teeth: I would try it and let the kids decide. If you are in Epcot anyway it could be fun.

Wow, I am amazed by how many people say there's nothing for kids to do in WS. It is one of my DD8's favorite places, and we have still not been able to do everything in a day (opening to closing). There is SO much to explore just in the shops alone, even if you don't buy much there are a ton of fun, educational opportunities around every corner. There is the toy store in the UK, the pastry shop in France, the candy store in Japan, the sombreros in Mexico... in addition to everything else that has been mentioned. Talk to the CM's in every country, they will tell you all kinds of tidbits and information about the real countries and cool stuff about the Epcot versions as well. Those of you who just stop at the Kidcot stations or breeze through in an hour are completely missing the point of the World Showcase, in my opinion.

We totally skip it. THe ride in Mexico and Norway are ok adn never corwded other than that boring.

Ds (6) and dd (5) love it. They like the Norway and Mexico rides. They like the Kidcot stops and looking in the stores. The shows are pretty cool, too. We met lots of characters back there (Aurora, Belle, Beast, Geppeto, Aladin and Jasmine) The candy lady is fun, too, but did anyone else find her sing song voice kind of hynotizing?!? Maybe it's just me...

You can get a schedule of showtimes at the park entrance, then just work your way around the WS and catch as many live shows as you can. They really are so good! Also, the task of getting all of the stamps on her mask kept my dd7 going all the way around the world. For our family it's a "not to be missed" part of the trip! :earsboy:

My kids love the World Showcase but, I'll be honest, it takes a bit of advance planning to pull it off. You have to, have to, have to keep an eye on the entertainment schedule. You'll get an Epcot Times Guide but you can do a bit of advance research by clicking on the "Epcot" button at http://pages.prodigy.net/stevesoares/ you can also use this site to plan your character meet & greets.

And a trip to Disney World is supposed to be a "family" vacation - that means that you, as part of the family, should be able to enjoy the World Showcase - it is just one afternoon out of the whole trip. The first time, I told my kids, "You are free to enjoy it or not enjoy, that is up to you. But you are not free to whine at me about it - the other option is to cut our vacation short by one day."

Here is what we like:

Your four year old will enjoy the hedge maze at the UK pavilion, it may be too small for the 9 year old. British Invasion is fun beatles type music - extra fun after dark, I think. The World Showcase Players jokes will probably go over the kids' heads but they'll probably enjoy the silly antics of the skit.

Canada - "Off Kilter" is great fun - bagpipe Rock & Roll, might be too old for them although we bought the CDs and my 9 year old loves them. I'm not a big fan of the circle-vision movie at this pavilion. If you are going to do a circle-vision - the China one is more interesting.

France - the "Serveur Amusant" act is a balancing act. My kids were pretty impressed.

Morocco is just plain fun. There are almost always characters from "Aladdin". It is full of nooks & crannies with fun things - kidcot, drums, interesting shops. "MoRockin" is a Middle Eastern Pop group, often with a belly dancer. My 9 year old plays violin so the fact that they have a violin player was a neat thing for her.

Japan - "Matsuriza" is a drum act that a lot of folks really like but what we LOVE is "Miyuki", the candy artist. Get there at least 10 minutes prior to her scheduled performance and position your girls close to the cart where she does the demonstration. They may get selected to choose a color and animal to have made into a lollipop. If so, they'll get to keep it (free). My girls have gotten to do this twice and it is always a highlight. I particularly like the Swan and the dragons (although I usually hate dragons). There is also a Japanese Storyteller but we haven't heard that yet. When we were there, there was a little museum type exhibit of pressed tin toys that we enjoyed even though we passed through pretty quickly. There is also a pond with Koi fish. The Yakitori house is a great place to eat after dark - take your food out to the area with the lanterns. There is just something special about it.

America - well, if you are there when it is hot, the American Adventure show is a great place to catch some A/C & maybe a nap. But there are funnel cakes and, as Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing."

Italy - the Living Statues mentioned in an earlier post are no longer featured here. The World Showcase Players do a cute skit called "Romeo & Edna". There is another act - a juggler, I think. But we haven't seen it yet.

Germany - kids always love the model train.

The Outpost is in here somewhere and the African Storytellers always come highly recommended but we haven't seen them yet. They're only there Mon - Friday.

China - Kids always love the Dragon Legend Acrobats because they are children too. On of my girls' favorite souvenirs was to have silk fans personalized with their names written in Chinese. The fan was only about $5.

Norway - there is a Viking boat play area and yummy treats in the shop. Maelstrom has trolls so it can be a little scary for your 4 year old. Princess meals available for Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Mexico - the Mexico ride is hokey. The San Angel Inn is a neat restaurant.

Another fun thing - exit Epcot through the International Gateway and go to "Beaches & Creme" over at the Beachclub resort. You can easily walk or take the boat. B&C is an old fashioned soda shop style restaurant with burgers and ice cream treats. It is very cute.

There are two entertainment options at Future World that I would like to recommend - Kristos is a Cirque du Soleil style balancing act and Jammitors is a Stomp style percussion group that our kids enjoy.

World Showcase seems to be the place that our family really interacts at Disney World - we stroll along, eat, and talk about what we liked and what we didn't.
