World Passport / Concierge Collection Questions

DW and I are still looking into purchasing DVC. We travel to WDW approx two weeks+ per year every year, so I think financially DVC would make sense. My questions are related to the World Passport and Concierge collections. We watched the DVC DVD last week and Disney seems to really be promoting how you can trade your points for non-disney vacations. I've read many posts on this board in which ppl say to rent points instead and that trading for non-disney accomodations is "expensive" and not worth it, but give no examples of how many points a typical week would cost elsewhere. If anyone has taken advantage (or soon will) in one of the above collections, could you please give the information on your accomodations and point cost. I have also seen ppl talk about trading their points for an Alaskan Cruise. Which cruise line is this with? and how many points does that typically run?

for the world passport. This is II. It can definitely be worth it if you get a good place!!! but there are a bunch of lemons out there you have to know what you are getting.

low season per week
1-bedroom - 124 points
2-bedroom - 207 points

mid season per week

1-bedroom 160 points (for Hawaii this is the only season)
2-bedroom 270 points

sometimes with II if you are already a member you can get a better detail through them using a getaway and paying cash.

the Conceirge Collection points chart is more like DVC. - sometimes in varies on Sun-thur vs fri/sat

The Concierge Collection has specific amounts of points charged per night that varies with the resort. For example: the Grand Hotel on Macinac Island, MI is 40-72 points a night for a standard view room, depending on season. For the World Passport collection, this is a weeks trade to another timeshare and will range from 124-160 per week in a 1 bedroom or 207-270 per week in a 2 bedroom, depending on season.

Obviously, the World Passport exchanges are more cost effective than the Concierge, but the CC can be booked on short notice, while the WP must go through the normal timeshare exchange system, and that can take time and may need flexibility on your part.

Some swaps are more worth it than others. They have changed the II swaps now so that you know how many points for what season as in the last post, but before it used to be variable. I swapped a two bed at HH in March (I don't own at HH but at VWL) for a three bed with pool in portugal and the quality was definitely as good as dvc and it would have cost a lot to stay there as I checked out the prices. But, I also did a swap to one bed in spain and although it was nice enough - it wasn't worth the trade and the room quality was nowhere near comparable.

I have done 2 swaps to DLP, which was v worthwhile, as we get cheap flights from the uk, and the park passes were included. Obviously swapping isn't worth it all the time, but if it's worth it for you and you want to do it then there are some good exchanges.

If you think you wont use all the points, just buy less. While SOME trades are of good value, most aren't and those that are can be very hard to get and tend to come at short notice.
